Sold an item for Parts not Working and now customer wants a refund

I sold a graphics card recently recently For parts or not working. The card was listed as â€œThis graphics card works for a few minutes after boot and then I get green lines all over the screen. Fans work. The person who bought it thought he would be able to use it in a mining computer and I told him I did not think it would work the way he was thinking it would. But he still wanted to try it. I would have refunded his money before even sending it due to what he was trying to do with it. But like I said he wanted to try it. I'm not sure what is fair here, he wants a full refund and I do not think that is right. What should I do?

If he has opened an Item Not as Described case with eBay, you will need to accept the return, send a label to the buyer for shipping back to you and then refund once you recieve the item back in your possession.

If you don't,  eBay will force a refund and you will not receive your item back.

No choice, take the return. Not a big deal on a smaller item

Sure makes you want to "Stay eBay" as a seller, huh?

Unfortunately regardless of what you put in your listing or what the buyer and you agreed on in messaging, eBay will make you take the return if they file a claim.  Just accept the return, refund when you get it back and maybe sell it on a more friendly site to sellers than eBay has become.

What other sites are better for selling then Ebay?

You will have to refund the buyer, no matter what you do.

Though to be honest, I don't know why you would sell a broken graphics card. What use is selling a card that has no use? What could possibly be salvaged from a broken card? Seems like this sale was kind of a set up for yourself. I'm all for selling parts people can use to fix their widget, but I fail to see what anyone could use this broken card for?

People fix broken cards all the time. This is a expensive card and could possibly be fixed by someone who knows what they are doing. The other thing is some of the parts work like the fans.

Re: Sold an item for Parts not Working and now customer wants a refund

I sell things for parts or not working all the time, as stated above there are people who buy things broken to repair, what does happen sometimes is that they buy it expecting to be able to repair it and if they can not then they return it, I have very rarely had this happen.

How do you describe a item so as to not give people hope that it works. I think my mistake in all this is the way I described it. The card boots up with green lines all over the screen, but what I failed to remember is it locks up the computer after a while.

@1greatscot  How do you describe a item so as to not give people hope that it works.

By describing everything you just stated and not leaving important things out like it will 'lock up your computer'. Don't give people 'hope'. Give them 'honesty'

Selling broken things you have to figure a larger percentage will be returned than selling other type things. If you only have 1 to sell, you have a good chance of this happening.

There is a category for Parts Not Working - but you also have to be careful not to describe what it might NOT do, only what it does do - ie: fans working is ok

Re: Sold an item for Parts not Working and now customer wants a refund

I sell plenty of non working  stuff in need of service

my advice is always the same

just say YES to the return

its easy enough to take it back. the buyer got what was described and changed there mind

its certainly not a scam and not really return abuse but you may feel another way

in the end is how things are supposed to work at ebay

So in the end what am I out.  Looks like shipping both ways, but what about the rest of it?

you are basically back to square one with a card that is not for everyone

losing shipping money due to return is just part of selling on ebay
