Shipping fees

I recently sold an item and shipping said from $17 to $89 I believe. I also put buyer will be responsible for shipping prices depending on location. Shipping ended up being around $100. They were only charged $17 through eBay at time of sale. Buyer has agreed to pay the remainder. So since he already paid the price of item and the $17 for shipping how do I get the rest of the .money for shipping? And why if it said $17-$89 did they only charge $17?

This is for that huge mirror? Only shows $21.85 UPS ground shipping to me in Chicago.Did you even weigh it and measure it before you listed the shipping? Im surprised it sold at all, you have no measurements in your listing. I hope you are planning to double box it, or you will have a disaster on your hands. You can send your buyer a PP invoice for the rest of the shipping fee..tho that really isnt allowed. Im surprised too that he agreed to do that, hes not required to.

Good input was already provided by bonjourami  just as an FYI shipping to my location, which is Northern Virginia, shows $23.99 for UPS ground based on your posting. I am not sure what you had for dimensions in the shipping information, what the weight was or how you purchased the shipping label to cause the shipping cost to be $100. As a side note you cannot "force the buyer" to pay for excess shipping costs above and beyond what eBay showed them when they made the purchase. You statement "buyer will be responsible for shipping prices depending on location" means nothing. The eBay shipping calculator already presents the buyer with the cost, provided you have the correct size and weight, when they purchase the item.

It appears you don't sell a lot on eBay but you should be aware that if you purchased the UPS shipping label through eBay that UPS is notorious for adding additional unilateral charges to the original cost of the label.

With calculated shipping, the shipping you see at your end on the listing is how much to ship to your zip code, not sure where you would have seen a range of shipping cost.  With calculated shipping, eBay would not know the cost or where it will be shipped to till sold.

To ship to Portland Oregon, I see just under $15 using the information you supplied when you made the listing. You have to use the box size and weight packed when building a listing, not the size/weight of just the item.

If the buyer agreed to pay the additional shipping fees can they send you payment by PayPal?

Buyers see the cost when they buy, that is what they pay. Any additional come out of sellers pocket. Charging additional cost via Pay-Pal would be out side eBay and against eBay rules and you could loose your sellers protection.

I think they used that quick listing tool that shows eBay's estimated cost of  shipping in that category and let eBay go with that.¹ For sure if OP input exact measurements rounded up and the correct weight and package type (length over 12") the shipping shown would be correct. And it's  off by a lot. I'm in FL and shipping is $29.45, about the most the US will pay.

The question is

Is  the seller going to eat the mistake and learn from the costly mistake

or say over $70 is too costly to eat and cancel and get a defect?

Me, since there's enough to pay for shipping from the buyer's payment without having to go in my pocket then I would ship it and tell myself sometimes we don't  make what we thought we would.

You believe, or you are sure?

And why if it said $17-$89 did they only charge $17?

When there is a shipping discrepancy like this, it is usually because the seller puts the wrong dimensions or weight into the listing.

What were the dimensions, weight, and service of the actual package you mailed? Were they the same as the dimensions, weight, and service you put on your listing?

For example, that listing shows $23.99 shipping by UPS ground to my address in NH. But I go to the UPS site and enter a package that is 24" x 32" x4" and 4 pounds, it tells me the postage as $60+.

This sounds like the beginning of a nightmare situation. Shipping shows as $22+ for me, which I highly doubt. If this is for the mirror, I sure hope you packaged this, but something tells me this will go bad on you. Some items are best to sell locally. Good luck.

You don't. Whatever YOU put in the listing is the only amount charged to the buyer. Sorry for your mistake.

Wow... never heard of a buyer agreeing to pay MORE than they purchased an item for. Not too smart but great news for the OP.

Well, if they paid extra shipping with funds out of their bank account (new/returning seller money hold before payout) and has shipped, buyer saying they will pay the extra, ya ok I hope that works out.

I can’t even imagine the problems I’d have not using dimensions and estimated weight of packaged items.  That is pretty much something that MUST be done when selling online, unless using local pickup only.
