Send Offers feature question

velvet@ebay, devon@ebay , elizabeth@ebay

I have a list of items that I sent Offers out on last week and the offers expired on August 13, 2022.  However, those items have NOT been put back on my list of items available to Send offers for again.  I had one Buyer interested in two items he got Offers on but he missed the deadline and the Offers expired ... now I can't Send out Offers again ...

I need the details on how that feature works, what happens to listings after offers expire and how to get them back on the list so Offers can be sent again?????  What happens if we delete Expired listings from the Offers Sent list???

Thank you,

Mr. L

Thanks for that post @simply-the-best-for-you , I just checked my Watch list and the two items that a Buyer wanted from the Offers I sent are still being Watched.  However, those two items are not on my Send offers eligible list several days after those Offers expired.  I suspect there is some type of a glitch ... I checked this on different browsers which usually points to an issue outside my system.

Not all watchers are eligible to receive offers. Just because an item is being watched does not necessarily mean you can send an offer for that item.

a) the watcher may have already received an offer from you on that item.

b) the watcher may have received too many other offers on different items from other sellers

c) the watcher may have turned off the ability to receive unsolicited offers

I'm not from eBay, but I know how this works.  You cannot send out offers to the same person on the same item.  It's never been allowed.  If they missed it or let it expire & you want to give them the discount, your options are to change the price on the listing or give them a refund after they purchase at full price.

This is working as intended.   In case eBay checks in, it WOULD BE NICE if it were allowed, so I probably get 40% of people who say they missed the offer & want me to resend it & I can't do that.  That said, I understand why it works the way it does, b/c some unscrupulous sellers would use the feature to spam the same buyers repeatedly.

ETA:  Just to clarify, you are able to send out offers on the same item, to other prospects, even immediately afterwards.

I think my account has a discrete glitch with the Send offers feature ... in my OP I have asked the three eBay Team Members to explain how Send offers works so hopefully their explanation will confirm my suspicions ...

Really as ajszcz740 Said, that's how it works. I don't want you to send me another offer if I didn't reply to your first offer.

@ten_o_nine

Thank you for the reply ... hopefully my request for an explanation on how it works will include that point OR they may explain Send offers are blocked on an item where Offers were sent for "X" number of days.   I think it would be a challenge for eBay to keep a log with no time limit on all items Offers were sent on, who they were sent to, etc to avoid an offer being sent again to a Buyer sometime int eh future, just my opinion of course.

Isn't that exactly what eBay does with feedback? i.e. Maintain a log of a relationship between a buyer, a seller, and an item?

@luckythewinner   Its a good question but the subjects are different, the Feedback system is fixed in that it only has messages it records and on any transaction and the ability to leave FB stops after 60 days.  Offers on items are a little more fluid, formats on listings can change and listings can be Active for years, members can Watch and un-Watch and then Watch again sometime later so certain variables change.    After starting this thread I looked up the Help Pages explanation on Sending offers ... here is an excerpt from that section ... depending on what reply I get from the eBey Team I may ask for more details on the red high lighted statement below.

"2. Select Send offer beside the eligible item (or Eligible to send offers, if you're using Seller Hub).

  • Not all listings are eligible. Eligibility is determined by a number of factors, including age of listing, listing format, and rules that manage the number of offers buyers receive
  • Items must be in the buyer's cart for at least 2 days to send an offer"

I look forward to what the eBay team says about this ...

You are overthinking it.

All they need to do is record the listing ID and the potential buyer's ID when the first offer is made.

After that, if there is a matching record, additional offers are not allowed.

When the listing is deleted, they delete the history for that item because it is no longer needed.

My day job for 35 years has been designing this sort of thing.

Thank you @luckythewinner  ... not over thinking it as much as asking them exactly how the eBay version of this type of system works.   If indeed it works the way you mentioned then one work around is after Offers expire on an item the Sell Similar function can be created to produce an entirely new listing (and the original deleted) ... the new listing would not have any history but might get the same or a different group of Watchers for offers to be sent to.

Re: Send Offers feature question

Why not just put best offer on and not worry about all of that lol. This also isn't an issue with eBay, it's how the system works. Lets say I go to one of your listings a few times in a day or week or I watch it, then I'll be on that "list" to send and offer to. If you then send that offer to me and I decline or it expires then that's that. I would advise just putting best offer on anyway as you may get more offers or more chances to sell and item. Most people are just looking for a small discount, yea their are some lowballers but who cares.

@laststopgeneralstore   That is certainly one approach and works for many Sellers.  I prefer not using the Best offer function on my listings ... I get enough low ball messages as it is.  The Send Offer feature I like because I am sending what I am willing to sell an item for AND more importantly WHEN I want to move items along via an "Offer" process

I know that B.O. can have settings to basically do the same thing but it is basically on all of the time.   Its just not my preferred method of selling.

Re: Send Offers feature question

IF I'm understanding correctly......fairly easy to test

Send me a link to an item, I'll put a watch on it.

I will decline, you end the listing.

Relist, send me a link, I'll put a watch on it

Send me an offer (think it has to be up 2 days)........and see if I get it.....

Good Morning, @mr_lincoln! For sending offers, someone must have the item in their cart or watching it and must have turned on accepting offers within their account for the option to be available and only one offer can be sent per buyer. As a workaround you can reach out to the buyer via messaging to present the new offer, and if they're interested you can create a new listing tailored to them as you suggested.

That would work if you were willing to trade your current watchers for the hope of getting the same watchers on your new listing.

But if you watcher has contacted you and told you he missed the offer and would like another shot at it, I think the easiest option by far would be to either Reply With Offer to his message, or simply ask him to make you an offer through Contact Seller.

elizabeth@ebay   My sincere thanks for the follow up.  Would you be able to shed some light on the highlighted section below (red) and further explain the details of that statement?

Additionally, I believe it was @luckythewinner on this thread who mentioned the possibility that once an offer is sent to a Buyer on a specific item another one, regardless of the Offer method, cannot be sent to that Buyer on that item ever again?!?  And is that what you meant on the 2nd half of your post, " ... and only one offer can be sent per buyer. ..."?

Hey, @mr_lincoln. We unfortunately wouldn't have more specific details that we're able to share, for the portion in red that you highlighted but I'd love to call out our Seller Center video here on sending offers as it does touch base on qualifications for sending offers in the FAQ section. And you are correct, I apologize for my statement, as it wasn't the clearest. If an offer expires for a specific watcher, then you won't be able to send another offer to them due to the concern of spamming (I hope that's much more clear). @luckythewinner did have some great call outs for work arounds though, so that's awesome!
