Screwed on USPS 1st Class W/Tracking

Has this happened to you? Does E-Bay do this regularly? I ship soley using USPS/E-Bay shipping labels. Had a package going to Florida,1st class mail.Tracking showed it ARRIVING at the buyers home town post office,BUT, it then showed it went backwards to the previous city's facility in same state and that it was on it's way to buyers home town, and there it froze as IN TRANSIT. The buyer filed an item not recieved case and E-Bay refunded the buyer,BUT,they took the money from my Pay Pal account. Where the H.E.double hocky sticks is seller protection here? I provided the tracking info to all parties, called the USPS,also asked the buyer to contact his local P.O.  since it showed it arriving there at some point. But E-Bay took the money from my account stating that I did not provide proof of delivery. OMG! I am MAD as H.E.double hocky sticks! E-Bay punishes the buyer now for USPS mishandeling. God help us all if USPS goes on a mishandeling spree!

I've never faced this situation in all the time I've sold here, so just speculating, but it seems like there should be some way to *work this*  Seems like eBay should have provided some way for sellers to seek fair redress is shipping does finally show as Delivered.  Of course, "seems like" is always questionable and laughable on eBay.

When eBay refunds the payment back to the buyer, doesn't it show on your sales page?  Couldn't something be worked through sending an invoice.. some way to file for payment through eBay, etc.?

Or does this end up being something like the ***Tough Luck, Cookie*** result when a newbie ships out the merchandise BEFORE the buyer has even paid, and now that payment is likely never going to be made.  Smiley Sad

I disagree.  Once a case has been closed, eBay cannot go back in time to change the circumstances that existed at that time to come to a different decision.  It happens seldom, and business-type sellers don't even blink about it.

A seller can, however, call and ask for a bit of time extension.  Beyond that, it is too bad so sad.

the USPS handles one million peices of mail per Day and delivers to every address in the United States and most of the world. If they mishandle just 10% of that is 100,000 pieces of mail. if your in that 100,000 thats totally unacceptable, but where do thet have only a 10% fail ratio?

Agreed.  I have shipped and received well over 2000 packages via USPS and not a single one of them has ever gone missing.  That's a pretty darn good track record as far as I'm concerned.

it is NOT the buyers NOR the sellers fault

The seller is the one who offered to ship via the USPS, and the selelr is the one who hired the USPS to deliver the item on his behalf.

It may not be the seller's fault, but it is still the seller's responsibility

You are a business. Work loss $ into your pricing.

Exactly.  Perfectly put.

Re: Screwed on USPS 1st Class W/Tracking

Sorry to hear what happened, but when shipping, stuff can happen. B&M business's call it shrinkage and factor the cost into their products. You can pick a price point and ship everything above it with insurance, you can also use a virtual cookie jar for all the low priced items, so if/when stuff like this happens, you are covered.

Selling online means getting the item to the customer, and ebay is no different than all the others, when they say it is our responsibility. Without tracking saying the package was delivered, it is up to us to try to find out why, and if not found, we need to refund, then collect on the insurance, if bought.

If I had a buyer file an INR case and I saw the tracking had stalled, the first thing I would do is call to get an extension on the timing of the case.

That extension should be automatic up to the date where the carrier decides it's lost, considering that the buyer could get the package the next day after ebay yanked the money out of the sellers account.

They should be holding the refund to the buyer until that time expires, if they were fair.

(sorry for the last 4 words up there - I couldn't help myself and I am still laughing at it).

I have been told in the past that if the tracking does end up showing delivered at a later point to call back and you *should* be able to get the refund reversed.  I've never had it actually show as delivered after the fact so I have never tested this out.

OP - you're taking a risk by shipping First Class unless you are paying for extra insurance.  I don't pay for extra insurance, but I know that I'm going to have to swallow a few refunds. I opt to self-insure past what the post office provides with priority mail, unless something feels really off about the transaction or the item is one of a kind or particularly fragile.

eBay won't reverse the refund. They will however issue the seller a courtesy refund. But the buyer keeps their refund.

Re: Screwed on USPS 1st Class W/Tracking

The post office delievered 158 BILLION pieces of mail last year, that means the post office delivers about 500 MILLION pieces of mail each and every day not including Sundays which is package delivery only.  They have a little over 2% failure rate, and very little of that is lost mail.  That includes missed scans, tossed in the wrong bin, etc.

Does E-Bay do this regularly?

Does eBay regularly calculate seller status and shipping metrics based on their published standards?

Yes, they do.

Where the H.E.double hocky sticks is seller protection here?

The seller protection is still here, and is the same as it has been for years. Sellers are really only protected from two things:

1) an INR if the seller can provide the proper delivery confirmation;  and

2) having to refund twice if they refunded correctly the first time.

Neither of those situations seems to apply to you.
