I'm new to ebay and one of my first 3 sales wants to return an item as defective, the item is NOT defective and I had to use my own cash time and gas to get it delivered. I have no returns set up but with the money back guarantee it seems pointless. I want to put offer partial refund because I know there's nothing wrong with it but I'm afraid I'm just going to get negative feedback so I have no idea what to do. It doesn't seem fair to offer a full refund when I know it works and used my own money delivering it which will get returned to paypal and not my pocket, which means more wasted gas going to the atm if I need cash.

Tell her to return for a full refund..if she opens a case, and you ignore it, you will lose your money and your item. No returns doesnt mean no refunds.

Thats nice that you were able to work things out with the buyer and any question you have pertaining to selling or buying on ebay can be answered here sometimes folks don't like the answers they get,but its just the reality of buying and selling on this venue...

First, how do you know it is not defective. With used items, sometimes things do happen in shipping.
As far as gas and time, those are the costs of doing business. You could raise your prices a bit to cover it, but you have to be careful that you still remain competitive.
Offering a partial will not deter a buyer from leaving a negative and since you are a 0 seller I can understand not wanting to start off with one. Even if your return in full, buyer can leave a negative.
You actually figured it out for yourself. You contacted your buyer and worked it out among the two of you. Best solution

Really? I've only ever seen people act like new users should automatically know how everything works. I guess I would be a complete tool if this was my means of income though so it's understandable.

Myself I'm working on my second million from this place, but won't make it due to running out of life and no real desire anymore. Never was a fulltime job for me just a hobby...

I don't know about all that but I did cross $100,000 total sales at some point.

This ID is up to 187 grand, but like I said the desire is gone the treasures I leave behind will get spread like the wind by my kids or go to the landfill...

Just in case, you should know that you can have several IDs.
Some have one for buying (especially hobbyists and sellers procuring stock on eBay).
Another for selling.
And another for posting.
It's a good idea to start by buying, because most sellers leave feedback (buyers less often) and because scammers prey on zero or low feedback sellers. Then turn that account into your selling account and open another for buying.
If you do get a neg when your selling account is new, you can abandon the poisoned account and switch to your new clean account with all positive (buying) feedback.
Glad this worked out for you. You'll get tough love here for your questions, but it is love even when tough.
