Process to add variations to Listing that was created without any variations

You don't have to create a new listing from scratch to add variations to an existing listing that was created without any variations.   The process below will create a new listing with a new Item Id, but all the other item's information will be intact.

To add variations to Listing that was created without any variations:

o From Manage Active Listings, select item Action of Save As Template from dropdown menu.

o Create Your Template will appear completely populated with item's information.

o You must enter a unique Template Name.  I copy and paste the item's Title.

o Create your variations in the template then Save it.

o You're Saved Your Template will appear with a button List With Template.  Don't press the button yet.

o End the active listing from which the Template was made.

o Click List With Template button.

On Create Your Listing,  click the List Item to create new listing.

It is unfortunate that the above process will not create a listing with the old Item ID.    If eBay updated Save As Template to save the old Item Id as a read only field in the template, then if old item was ended when List With Template button pressed, the old Item Id could be reused for the new listing.   History would be saved.  Buyers looking to rebuy an item would not be presented Item Not Available because its item ID changed.

I submitted the above process to eBay Support with the suggestion that old Item ID be added to Save As Templates.   They responded that this is not possible.   Also, suggested documenting the process in eBay documentation.

It is unfortunate that the above process will not create a listing with the old Item ID, so history will be lost.  But there is a benefit that the new item created with be marked as a "Brand New" item so it will temporarily receive preferential placement.

I'm hoping your suggestion above with the templates will work for the opposite as well.  We are unable at this time to "sell similar" when you are down to one item left on a multiple listing and want to make an individual listing.  We have to start from scratch and it's so time consuming.  Going back and forth re-adding  item specifics...finding pictures again....very frustrating at the time it takes.

Why not leave it as a variation listing with only one variation available? Why would you waste time creating a new non-variation listing if you didn't have to @mydoggiescloset?

P.S. Old/dead thread.

I just tried it for the opposite.....going from Multi Listing to Single Listing and it worked.  I was able to remove the "variations" on the template.  I still have to go into the old listing to get the UPC and price.

So I can do "Best Offer".  They don't allow BO on multi listings.  Also, I don't want frustrated customers looking for a certain size and I only have one out of 7 sizes to choose from.  I'd rather put the actual size in the title.  Thanks for reaching out.  🙂
