Post Office closing

If the Post Office is closed down--at least partially in the fall-- by congress, how will that effect your business?

Considering the content of the mail I receive, other than mail order items, I wouldn't even miss USPS. 99.9% junk mail/advertising.

I read "somewhere" that its exactly that sort of mail that is most of what the PO takes in. Packages are like 30%.

I read last that junk mail is about 50% of the USPS service (yeah, doesn't it seem like about 99.9% though).  What gets me is that the Direct Marketing Association does everything they can to force the cheapest delivery (for them) which is the type of bound printed matter that HAS to be delivered to every address on the manifest that goes with the pre-packed pallet (all that stuff we get for "resident" and "occupant").  If the USPS uses the no-junk mail option for that, then handling goes way up for these direct marketing companies and we can't have that.

So we're stuck with this junk almost no one wants which uses valuable resources to produce.

We recycle all of it, but I've also read that recycling isn't the answer, it's reducing waste.

I have read opinions that the reason Trump wants to close the Post Office is to prevent voting by mail.

and close Congress and the Senate.

That should have been done decades ago. I'm not holding my breath. Party doesn't matter - Dems and Reps are both cut from the same nasty rotten stinking piece of cloth.  Divide, divide divide, that's all these asshats know.

Term limits for Congress and the Senate is the only way our nation stands a chance. Our government wasn't meant to be a career - it was meant for ordinary, regular people to serve the nation in EVERYONE'S best interest.  As it stands we're the USCA - United States Corporation of America.  Ban political parties. Vote for the person, not the party.  Get rid of corporate support and lobbyists. Get back to the business of running the COUNTRY as a whole.

Stepping off my soapbox now.

AMEN!!!

Right, and it's far better to reduce waste and the energy taken to produce it.

No way would I want mass voting by mail. Think of the fraud, think of lost votes (mail DOES get lost). No way, no how.

If we want to get electronic, I think every US CITIZEN should have a unique voter card similar to a credit card that can be used at the polling place OR online. Once that card is scanned at the poll or entered online, it cannot be used again for that particular voting cycle.

Just my idea FWIW

The easier you are to offend the easier you are to control.

Not to get into a debate over an issue that may be fairly off-topic, there are states that already ONLY have voting by mail. If they have had a good experience I think that would indicate it being a good alternative to gathering in crowds even in November.

If voting by mail is good enough for Trump (the way he voted in Florida) it should be good enough for others.

At this time, mail-in voting has close to zero fraud incidence, similar to the very low in-person voting fraud (something like 0.0002%, and most of that are things such as clerical errors and bad data matching.  Most of the incidents of voting difficulties have been actually in-person (malfunctioning machines, the infamous 'hanging chad', etc.).

Playing on the what if scenario I would close shop.

90% of my items are 3 oz or less and ship in small milar (sp?)bags, 5% are 16oz or less and ship in the slightly larger milar bags or 9x11 Manila envelopes... the other 5% is a mix of just slightly over a pound to less than 2 lbs, and occasionally ship in actual boxes (Bro's figures when they sell).

There is no way I would pay UPS or Fedex rates for those weights and sizes I sell.

I hate photobucket right now... PS Answers given years ago may or may not be current now, please check with current posters to the boards to see if the information is still relevant.

When it comes to political leaders, America can't have its cake and eat it too! There is no perfect president, there never will be. Trump has done as much good as he has bad. But I will not vote for him in November, not with the stunt he just pulled with our postal system, no way.

Funny how some people disguise the failure in the white house by saying "congress".  The real trouble is in the way things are handled in Washington. You can't expect anything good from an administration that is governed by one man who wants to have the last say in almost, if not everything! He is a doctor, veterinarian, astronaut, PHD in physics, even shutting down the statements of a doctor who knows how to handle the virus issue.  There's a soap opera going on there!

The famous Chinese packet has to be resolved. USPS depends on our garbage mail to survive, that is a fact. I have spoken to my mail carrier and that puts a lot of burden on them. It drives them nuts!

So, we go back again to that issue, one person is dividing the country by taking everything out of context. For him, it seems that anything and everything is there, for his own "ratings" to go up, or an attack to him. He is taking the USPS  issue to spin it on his favor. Same as the virus debacle. He had everything under control until he saw himself in the clear.  24,000 deaths later, he is making anything and anything about his "ratings".

RIP my fellow Americans.

Close the White House???? Why would that happen ??? Unless someone has a habit if listening to the fake news networks which sadly too many are these days this country is finally about the USA for a change Thanks to the best president this country has had ! Trump has done more to put America 1st for a change and the facts are there to be seen if one was to just take a real look.  I am glad I do not live in a bubble ! Close the borders is a good answer ! Maybe then we would not have to worry anymore about things like the kung flu !!!!

"I'd be curious to know if any country anywhere at any point in modern history has ever simply shut down its mail delivery. "

Cypress did...about a month ago. True, they are very small, but they did it. I also got a notice from a magazine I subscribe to that they are no longer accepting renewals through the mail. It all has to be done on-line, including Letters to the Editor. I think this kind of precautionary thinking might be the wave of the future.

There's a lot of streamlining that's going to be done in general, I think.  No huge changes, just many, many small ones.

It makes great fire-starter for my fire-pit.
