Perfect example of why eBay shouldn't force free returns on Motors or anyone

Had a Freightliner part listed, part number, general model/year range. Buyer asks will this fit a Cascadia?

I reply I am not sure, I would suggest contacting your dealer. He messages me a day or two later and says its a 2000.

I reply from my additional research, which I did,  your truck is outside the year range, but again, call a dealer.

Two days later he buys it and a week later he opens a remorse return. He has no problem paying for the label apparently. But eBay wouldn't want him to have any accountability here.

We motor sellers are now equivalent to a department store dressing room, only we eat shipping, so that's not even accurate, with the buyer having 0 repercussions for their stupidity or laziness.

So when you sell a cast iron part like a tie rod end for $20 and the shipping eats up $8-$9 the fees eat up another 30% and you take away maybe $5 profit if you're lucky.  Now I have to pay $4-$4.50 on a return label if they just find it $1 cheaper elsewhere or whatever their reason is.

This is a lose lose situation.  A lot of us are going to be forced to let the buyer keep the item and just issue full refunds on those returns.  Better to save $4 than lose more money and get back a part that even if you can re-sell it you can't make back your losses.

This will become a new scam.  Buyers will learn this with certain parts and it will become a thing to know that a seller won't have any profit margin left and will most likely just give you your money back and you get to keep the part.  If we can do the math, they can do the math.

If anyone's interested I know an ebay seller who has an entire garage full of vintage Ford & GM parts going back to the 30s who's looking for offers on the whole bag.

Re: Perfect example of why eBay shouldn't force free returns on Motors or anyone

Ebay just makes these changes without considering us, ever.  They frame it like they're doing the seller a favor, which is hilarious.  Sorry ebay but making me have to manually change over 1300 listings description block texts is not doing me a favor.  They just made me have to do hours upon hours of updating work with ZERO compensation, again.

I've been a seller on here for over 20 years.  I've been asking for some category updates FOREVER.  Want to help sellers, here's a couple suggestions I've had that have been ignored.

How about updating the Collectibles:Militaria category to show the last TWO CONFLICTS!?  The Current Militaria category goes from 2001 to TODAY!  The last campaign category is Operation Desert Storm in 1991, which I'm pretty sure means this category hasn't been updated since Ebay's inception.

Do you know how many times the military has changed uniforms in the past 25-30 years?  Shoving all those changes into one category is ridiculous!  The whole "Current Militaria" category is so oversaturated it's no wonder people have a hard time finding anything!  Maybe add Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom?

How about a DARK THEME for the main site?  My eyes can't handle a white background online and I'm not the only one.  IS it really so hard to make the main site dark as an option?  Every single other website can do this easily.

How about fixing the problem with being able to ship patches with ESE in some categories?  I can't ship with ESE in the Military Academy category (why not). Military academies HAVE PATCHES!!!  And why can't I use the ESE in the 1976-1989 Militaria category?  NO patches during that time frame?   I can select it when creating a listing but if someone buys a patch for $2 in that category I CAN'T PURCHASE THE LABEL!!!  That's a huge problem when shipping is over $4!!

How about bringing back the Vintage Automotive category?  Or at the very least adding a new CONDITION of "NEW OLD STOCK" for those parts and exclude them from the Free Returns.  Put some perimeters on it like a date range or something!  This is a standard term used in Automotive...  BUT EBAY DOESN'T USE IT!  NOS is a thing!

Why would everybody do that?  I'm confused by this whole thread.  Is eBay about to require free returns on New items, and I missed the anouncement???
EDIT: Never mind I just found it.  ONLY motors.

Starting July 15 it will be a requirement in certain categories like new parts/access in ebay motors.  It was in the June Seller news.

Re: Perfect example of why eBay shouldn't force free returns on Motors or anyone

I just go back to what's going to happen.
New parts will now be listed as used in order to circumvent this policy.
eBay will not (can not) enforce or police this.  Just like Item Specifics Spamming.
Buyers did not understand the 1st Guaranteed Fit / Free Returns policy.
Buyers won't understand this one either (used parts being excluded).
The next update to this new policy will be extending it to ALL auto parts.
I sure wish I had somewhere else to go

I  posted about  increased jump  to  listing's for buyers   pay  on local  pickup   only  .  which  they  will get buyers  out side  local pickup  , then arranged  shipping  &  no free returns  .     At some point  ebay  will  get   hit with  class action suit  that  will   also  show  proof of  ebay's arbitration   is   nothing  but a paper  tiger  worthless .

At the very least... At least eBays lack of ingenuity forces sellers to come up with ingenious work around and ideas lol.  I like the "local pickup" workaround.... But that probably won't be practical for high volume sellers.

Can't wait to see how this coincides perfectly with the end of ebays 10% off parts and accessories sales that is planned for July 7-22.    I bet they are advertising the sale and the new free returns policy alo in one big happy last ditch effort to get more people to the platform....... Should make for a huge bump in "buy without cairing and no responsibility" returns in the end of July...... Should be a good statistic

If I buy a part from a junkyard, do I get to return it because I bought the wrong item?

People buy clothes, wear them to an event, then return them for refund at department stores.

No, when buying used parts at a wrecking yard ... you own it as soon as it's paid for.  No refunds.

And, the department stores are trying to do their best to limit this practice.

Ebay is encouraging the buyer to do it.

I did an audited Income and Expense report for a six month period and the results were shocking.  I was working, hard .. for $7.15 per hour.  I was in the process of evaluating how to increase income, and/or decrease expenses ... and they came out with this new policy.  THAT was the straw.   The only thing I could do was to resign myself to making $6 an hour, or make the big money and go to work for McDonalds flipping burgers.

It makes me sad.  I've been a seller on eBay for over 11 years, and I permanently closed my store last week.  The person who took my call at customer "service" was very attentive, and said he was taking copious notes about my complaints which would be forwarded to 'higher ups'.   I asked him if he was getting complaints and account closings because of this and he admitted that he was and that it was his job to take all those calls; and that management was 'monitoring the situation.'

But, I feel awful about having to close.  Oh well, nothing lasts forever, and nothing good lasts very long.   I guess 11 yrs was a good run.  On to the next thing.  *sigh*

I have mentioned this before, and got roundly shot down, but I believe that Ebay does not want small sellers.  I can only judge that by the way they act.  NOT by what they SAY.  I have been in personal relationships with people before who claimed to love me, need me, want me around ... yet treated my like chit.  It is the actions that count.  To them, and to eBay I say, "I have been loved and needed and respected before .. I know what it feels like - and this ain't it."

Just like my divorce, I don't feel anger, only sadness.  It could have continued to be a good thing.   It could have.

I will hang out here for a while, just because I kind miss the gig (already).

Thanks to all who helped through the years.   Thanks for the laughs, for the shared stories, for the tips; this was the place for me to come and blow off steam, shake my fist at the heavens or celebrate successes.

Depends...
As a general rule, yes (unless the part was Ordered for you, from another salvage yard).
But, if you walked in here and bought the wrong part from me, yes you can return it.
BUT, I'm not going to drive out to your house and pick it up.

Also will depend on the Merchant's posted  return policy  out lined .  as the other poster has started  ,also  if  B/M  has  a  all sales final  ,no refunds  , No returns   policy  clearly placed for consumer to see when walking in and on the receipt   legal   .   in the second  hand market   buyer's have limited rights   ,but will very per states where they live .
