Pausing Sales During Holidays Due to Slow Shipping

I've decided to put my store on vacation mode for the month of December due to delays in shipping. This morning a customer contacted my about an item past due delivery, was shipped First Class a seven days ago-- tracking shows no activity. A forum search of recent discussions revealed many sellers complaining of severe delays in shipping. This makes sense with new disruptive Post Master rules, more people shopping online from pandemic lockdowns, postal workers calling in sick with covid, and the surge of holiday orders, the postal system is now overwhelmed. I've refunded the buyer, and will resume selling in January.

As I said before, eBay is doing the most damage by telling the buyer unachievable delivery dates. If they extended the time, at least buyers could plan ahead.

Yeah but if it's late on a ' fast and free ' delivery they give the buyer a $5 coupon. The fast and free is the first thing that should be eliminated. Even 10 days out there is still a few prime days of selling left. There is always late Christmas shopping that the buyer knows they blew the date too. I've done it myself quite a few times.

I'm having problems with all types of Mail.  4 more Packages shipped PRIOR to Thanksgiving are sitting in limbo.  The post office is no help with an additional 3 packages shipped the day after Thanksgiving.  I always go inside to purchase postage.  The post office says 1 package has no address.  I showed the counter receipt and asked if it had no address how did the lady behind the counter know what to charge?  Response I dont know.  If it had no address why does your scan sheet say the correct town and state as recipient address?  Response Umm good point I dont know.  Sometimes the computer just adds a town randomly?  Really, the computer picked the right town of 385 people and state out of thousands of towns and 50 states.  Response I guess so.  I dont know.  I'll call you if I figure it out.  

 

Another is sitting on a truck for 9 days.  

Another is circling Wyoming from Illinois to get to Indiana.

Another went to Dallas by way of New York from Illinois and is now in Oklahoma headed North.

And another has had a case closed twice because it was missing, then found, and is now missing again.  

 

The post office response is that they cant find truck drivers.  And they are very short of help.  I asked if they were hiring either help or truck drivers.  Response: No we have a hiring freeze because we are over staffed and had no way to know this year would be a big year for online shopping.  Really?

 

And I'll be refunding over $800 in purchases and out my items I'd guess when and if the post office finds them.  

 

I'm just furious at this point but at least I got it off my chest.

Had the same thought, but December is usually a good month for me (I'm not a store...just selling my HH stuff I've collected). USPS only seems to react when I open a case (whether as a Seller or as a Buyer). Stuff doesn't seem to move through the system -- First Class letters, packages and even Priority Mail packages. So far Buyers are being patient, but very frustrating!

I am just sick about shipping, I have 2 day shipping on all my items, but I ship 6 days a week so most items go out the same day. I have over 200 items that have not been delivered yet from the Dec 3 - 7th. I can't shut my store down for 2 reasons... 1st I sell vintage Christmas items, 2nd my husband just lost his job, due to change of company ownership.... Yes it was a complete shock to us and we are relying solely on my eBay business until further notice. Here all this time I thought I was doing so good keeping up with eBay sales and most of all my spirits... I am now starting to receive refund requests from buyers for not receiving their items. I not only have to refund the buyers but the buyer gets to keep the package when it finally arrives and not only that, I have been penalized by eBay for  11 items so far for late delivery. I'm already up to 1.00 % late delivery from the 11 packages and I have 200 late ones pending... and am only allowed 3.0 % before I get dropped down to below standard status from eBay. It's about putting me over the edge... I've been working 12 to 14 HR days 7 days a week and this is what I get? I have to admit, I'm 😢 sad depressed and am hitting an all time low in my life....

I feel you, I am frustrated also.  Dont refund right away.  EBay says if there is any movement in the last 10 days, they will extend the INR case.  And talk to your customers.  I have spent a lot of time back and forth with my customers and most are understanding.  They realize it's not my fault and they appreciate my communication.  Of course some people just cant be pleased, but the majority have been understanding.

 

As for your late deliveries, Ebay says they are going to correct the service metrics and remove defects as long as you ship in your handling time.  That doesnt always happen right away so give it some time.  If it hasnt been corrected by the 20th, contact ebay.

 

Lastly, 2012 I went through the same thing with my husband.  It was one of the hardest points in both our marriage and our lives in general.  But it turned out to be the best thing that ever happened.  We expanded Ebay, did a lot of research on products and found a couple great niches.  Now we both do Ebay full time and make more money then we did when we were working two fulltime jobs making profit for someone else.  Dont get me wrong, it was extremely hard for a couple years.  We had to make some sacrifices but, I do not regret it for a moment.  Sometimes what seems like a curse it truly a blessing in disguise.  Keep your head up!

I am closing early too due to very slow USPS deliveries and items getting lost.

Most of my BIBLES ship PRIORITY MAIL but are still taking a week. Media rate

is 10 to 14 days or more.  Priority Mail has gone up so high for Christmas  I 

can't afford to send all of my bibles PM.

So I am closing tomorrow BUT I would like to continue to work on my store

listings, management, inventory, etc.   When I took  "TIME AWAY" before 

I could not CREATE.  But I have about a 100 new items I would like to have

ready for 2021.  Has to be better than 2020!!!   

DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW I CAN CREATE NEW LISTINGS WHILE MY STORE

IS ON "TIME AWAY" ????

People JUST DO NOT USE usps. Use FED EX OR UPS. ALSO, use expedited express for items and you should be ok with the other carriers.

I am in the same position as linus.hux72fe

 

I have MANY packages mailed from the 27th Nov onwards stuck either at the outgoing hub or further along at the buyers incoming hubs. I have opened many parcel search claims which closed automatically with the reason that it's the pandemic and staff shortages. They didn't even attempt a search just closed the trace claims within a couple of hours.

I don't even want to count the number i have delayed (over 7 days from mailing date) its too scary!

 

Michigan has the worst hub im sure in the whole of the US

 

I closed my online stores last week for 3 days hoping that would help and mulling over whether to close again. I did notice one package got delivered with no scans after the initial pick up scan because my buyer reached out to inform me that she loved her merch! That one took 10 days to arrive.....not bad for Priority i guess but was kinda hoping the rest would only take 10 days.

This is a repeat of what happened back in April at the start of the pandemic and lockdowns when i had parcels take 3 weeks to be delivered

 

 UPS just pulled into my drive a few minutes ago and i asked him how it was going with them.....he just laughed and said 'dont ask'.... The UPS driver is helping out today as he usually works in Grand Rapids which is 120 miles away. He said they are behind and short staffed.

Thank you for the encouragement, I have indeed contacted my buyers and most have been understanding. As far as the late shipments docked from eBay, the reason they are doing it is because our post office is not scanning some of the packages therefore it looks like I hadn't taken them to the post office for 4-5 days after I printed the label and it was marked as shipped. But I did! Wonder if eBay will do anything for items such as that? I contacted eBay today and they are aware of the post offices not scanning the item and just shipping them on to the next warehouse. They also said that I cannot get a below standard for late shipping. All of this makes me so mad because I take pride in shipping the same day!

I know it's too late for anything now however, if you are taking it to the PO, stand inline ask for a receipt for your items.  It will force them to scan them in.  If they refuse, stand your ground and ask to speak with the postmaster.  They are suppose to scan every item as they receive it.  If you want a receipt for proof of drop off, you have a right to it.  I am blessed with my current PO, but my last one, I had to butt heads with them a couple times before we came to an understanding.

Yeah I’m in Ann Arbor and having customers starting to file claims. I’m so frickin **bleep** off. I wish I would have known this mess would happen I would have said to hell with selling in December! I have about 15 packages sitting around in Detroit 🤬
