I get an email from ebay telling me my item has been purchased, paid for and it's time to ship.

but the order itself shows that the paypal payment is still processing.

WTH?

Am I going to get dinged now for NOT shipping as per the email????

Congratulations, your item sold and it’s been paid for.

Hi Robert, It's time to pack up your item and ship it out. Make sure you send it within 1 day, the handling option you selected in your listing.

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is grateful for your support. eBay will credit you 10% in selling fees. Your donation will either be automatically collected 21 days after the item's sold date or you will be invoiced on the 22nd of each month. We recommend setting your Charity Payment Method on the eBay website to PayPal to ensure automatic collection.

Once collected, you will receive an email receipt from eBay's official donation processing partner, the PayPal Giving Fund. Have questions about your donation? Check out our Charity Seller Help & FAQ page.

I archived/deleted the message, so perhaps that is why you are not seeing this in my inbox in my account, but it was definitely sent and it was definitely from ebay.

Hi @rshfs, I have access to the messaging sent to you from our end and this shouldn't be impacted by archiving or deleting it from your end. I'm not seeing a notice to ship sent on the 23rd and wasn't able to find any messaging from eBay about your recently sold item. I still recommend sending this to spoof@eBay.com for review. If you have more details to share or if there is something I'm missing, I'm happy to email you directly so we can go into more detail on this topic. Just let me know!

well obviously it DID come from ebay...they know my first name, they know about the charity donation, the item is in fact sold and awaiting processing as per my paypal account...it's not a spoof...it's a failure on your end.  If you want the headers, etc.,  from the email, I can provide.  But please stop trying to convince me this email i am staring at didn't come from ebay.  My suggestion to you would be to believe me and find out what the problem is on YOUR end.

Yep, the same ebay that dings us for shipping after the stated handling time, even though the payment didn't clear for a few more days.  Or sometimes, never cleared (payment date is Unix epoch, so incredibly obvious).

Hi @rshfs, I apologize but I believe we have had a misunderstanding; the details you have cited (first name, charity donation references, sold item, etc) do not prove this message came from eBay and are commonly included in spoof emails. I am more than happy to continue to look into this with you, but I do need you to forward the email you received to spoof@eBay.com for review. Discussing what I am seeing on my end and asking questions about what you are seeing on your end is how we can discover any issue present and work on a fix. If there is an error occurring on our end I have no problem investigating this further, I just need additional information from you.

While some of these fake e-mails are very convincing and it's possible for the buyer to get your name when they sent the e-check and the charity info from the listing, I don't think the message you got is a spoof. @rshfs was this message sent to your eBay inbox or only to your e-mail?

@Anonymous, I looked at my last several transactions that were paid via echeck. The OP is absolutely correct that eBay tells you the item has been paid for + it's time to ship as soon as an eCheck is issued and before it clears. The wording from eBay needs to be changed when payment is made with an eCheck. This is what the eBay message says when an eCheck is sent:

Congratulations, your item sold and it’s been paid for.

Hi [name],

It's time to pack up your item and ship it out. Make sure you send it within 3 days, the handling option you selected in your listing.

The wording from PayPal is much more clear:

You received an eCheck payment. Like a regular paper check, an eCheck may take 3-5 days to clear. That's why you'll see the transaction status set as "Pending". Your buyer has sent the payment, but if you're shipping a physical item, we suggest you wait to send it out until the eCheck clears. We'll email you as soon as the money is in your PayPal account.

Five days later from PayPal:

An eCheck cleared. The eCheck from [buyer] for $x USD has cleared, and the money is now available in your PayPal account.

Good night and good luck

@rshfs

At the bottom of these messages there is an "email reference id" that can help Trinton to verify it came from eBay and he can escalate this for review.

thanks i see it, but i already forwarded the entire email to spoof@ebay.com

it's not really a huge deal because I knew not to ship it....I just think it's sloppy to have this out there for sellers that might be new.  It's been FOREVER since I've been paid by echeck, so it did confuse me at first.

The email reference id would be fantastic! @rshfs, I am sending you an email so I can get more details to investigate slight_smile

tried to send the email reference ID through ebay messaging but i get THIS:

You have reached the limit for number of private messages that you can send for now. Please try again later.

I haven't sent any private messages in i don't know how long, if ever.....more ebay frustration....apparently the limit is 0?

They may have paid via echeck which takes a few days to process. Regardless you DO NOT have to ship it until it is in your orders awaiting shipment. It won't show in your tasks until the payment goes through.

Another possibility is sometimes there are delays between the systems. You will not get dinged unless its in seller hub with the "ship withing 24 hours" caption.

My goal is live each day a little better than the last.

The poster knows that. The problem is the wording in the sale notification from eBay. eBay says payment received, ship now - the message is not recognizing that payment hasn't cleared yet. Sellers who don't know better may ship immediately thinking the payment was cleared because of the message sent by eBay.

Also, the fact that the email did not arrive internally through ebay's messaging system will lead one to believe it is a fake email.

So, to sum up, an email can be spoofed even if:

1.)  It has your first name....ebay used to tell us only actual ebay communications would include our real name.  Apparently that is no longer the case.

2.)  It only appears in your personal email, and not in the ebay messaging system.

Do we have any new guidance on what to look for now to recognize spoof/phishing emails since the older methods are apparently worthless?
