New eBay Proof of Delivery for Local Pick Up Option

For those who offer Local PickUp….ebay is rolling out a Proof of Delivery feature. When the buyer pays online, he gets a QR Code and a six digit number. When he picks up, he shows the code to the seller, who can scan it with his phone and that will then indicate delivered in the shipping area. Don’t want to get close enough to scan? The buyer is also given a six digit code number which he can provide to the seller, and that too will be accepted as proof of delivery.

This is being rolled out, so not everyone may have it today. Also, at this time, this won’t work if Local PickUp was not chosen by the buyer at time of purchase. (Example: Listing does not offer Local Pick Up. Buyer buys item, but then notices he lives in same town as seller, so asks for Local Pick Up. This won’t be available, although it sounds like they might try to add that ability down the line)

I don’t think there’s been a formal announcement yet, but this was discussed in today’s ebay Podcast. https://community.ebay.com/t5/The-eBay-for-Business-Podcast/Episode-88-Checking-In-With-Sellers-Sell...

Not saying 'NO' doesn't mean 'YES'.

The foolishness of one's actions or words is determined by the number of witnesses.

Re: New eBay Proof of Delivery for Local Pick Up Option

You know slippinjim, the way you come off is so unbelievable. I was going to create a thread the other day and my wife stopped me for exposing my ideas. But now that i saw this thread, I figured I would jump on it and let Y'all know that it is my idea.

Indeed, I had sent unsolicited emails to ebay but also have spoken many times on the phone and with paypal as well. I wanted to improve all our lives here and this is the way you treat me. Thanks pal.

You make it sound like "ha ha! You lose!" I didn't lose. I won. I am getting what I wanted. But now that you mention it, don't you think such a big time online seller, when someone clearly creates and pushes something that improves everyone's lives, including making potentially MILLIONS a day for ebay and it's followers, they would be kind and send me even just 1M. Just 1. If I followed through as you suggest, I could probably get a B.

I really didn't have "what your suggesting" on my mind, but thanks, I'll keep it in mind. I would just like a little respect. Please.

OH, I just wanted to say thanks SlippinJimmy

You just wrote or published a dated note that says very clearly, that I had mentioned to you that I told ebay about this idea in the past.

If I take you up on that idea in your last post, I'll be sure to use your post as evidence. Maybe if it goes the distance, you can be a witness!

Ok pal, talk soon I'm sure.

All the best to you and yours,

Take care! God bless you!

Does this work the same with managed payments?   I never once had any issues with local pick-up as it was.  I honestly thought local pick-up was not covered anyway in the paypal protections for item not received claims--maybe I should have been scared.

..............general reply..............

lets not forget some common sense here with local pickup,I have never offered it but the MBG still holds true. For those that are wondering what I am talking about,if you help the buyer load a piano onto his truck and later that day he is not happy with it,you are on the hook for free return shipping.

using local pickup does not void the MBG,you are stuck for return shipping  if the buyer is unhappy

fernwood,

I would assume this works with payPal or MPs, since this is NOT a PayPal exclusive thing, it's an ebay thing. I gather the QR code is generated by ebay at checkout.

Re: New eBay Proof of Delivery for Local Pick Up Option

1tuna,
Yes, they actually mention that returns are not changed by this. This isn't about INAD claims or returns, it's about avoiding INR claims. There's nothing in this that would require a buyer to offer you the opportunity to pick up the returned item (or have it delivered by the buyer to the original pick up location. )

Re: New eBay Proof of Delivery for Local Pick Up Option

My way of thinking would be, just like a B&M store, if you come to my location to pickup and you want to return it, then you would need to bring back to me. Would be  different if I the seller delivered it to you.

Re: New eBay Proof of Delivery for Local Pick Up Option

I know for some sellers it may sound like a practical solution but unless I specifically offer local pickup I absolutely do NOT want buyers coming to my location to pick up their items, first we are not a retail location and my house is not in a commercial zone (yes, local zoning ordinances can affect you in a residential zone when you have cars coming and going for commercial purposes). Last but not least I have an actual job and can't afford to sit around all day waiting for some buyer who said they'd be here at 11a to finally show up around 3:30p... No way, it's always been literally "cheaper" for me to ship the item, granted this local pickup might cut down on SNAD's thou I can see them offering that too and then what, wait for the buyer to show up again so they can return the item?

Fno thank you!

Re: New eBay Proof of Delivery for Local Pick Up Option

Is the name of the new Ebay payment solution for local pickups called CashTrakR ? If not, I doubt they are using your service, or are considering giving you any form of payment for your idea.

redmodelt

standard ebay return policies apply. There is NO requirement that the buyer return it to the initial drop off location, or make it available for pick up by you. But if the buyer really wants to return it and really wants his refund, he might be agreeable to something like that. But he is not required to agree to it.

@vrie39

There is nothing that says you MUST allow a buyer to come get their stuff. This is for sellers who choose to list with the option of local pickup.

Right, I was looking further down the road...

(Example: Listing does not offer Local Pick Up. Buyer buys item, but then notices he lives in same town as seller, so asks for Local Pick Up. This won’t be available, although it sounds like they might try to add that ability down the line).

Without one.....you got nothin'

I think you said you had offered this idea to eBay on the past, if they signed an NDA then you might have cause but if it was an unsolicited submission then again....you got nothin'

I am not convinced this invention is novel enough for a patent.

The buyer (valet parking customer) is assigned a QR code (valet ticket) when he makes a purchase (drops off his car) which identifies him as the rightful owner when he picks up the item (picks up his car) and provides the seller (restaurant) with proof the item was delivered (car was returned).

Re: New eBay Proof of Delivery for Local Pick Up Option

Usually, you need to solve a problem and you think, "how can I fix this?"

I sold a drum set years ago. I accepted paypal and the buyer came, seemed very happy, we chatted for a bit, and they took away the $500 purchase. Then right at the end of the possibility for return, the buyer filed a INR claim and because I didn't ship, I didn't have any tracking and couldn't prove delivery. I was out $500.

Ebay used to say, "you can't say cash on pick-up in the listing" but they let you enter "ALTERNATIVE PAYMENT, Please email for details", So I would say this and when I would tell people, since I can't provide proof of delivery, I have to accept cash. This scared away a lot of folks, thinking that I was up to foul play.

I talked to ebay at great length about my idea. They listened each and every time, "Oh what a great idea!". I sold a clock recently that was 20 minutes away and the buyer wanted to do local pick-up and I said I had to take cash, but the problem is, how would taxes be collected and sent in? So the buyer ended up shipping and I could prove delivery but they were upset not to pick-up because it was a really cool and fragile item. The item, well packed via priority mail, was busted in transit and I refunded the buyer.

The whole idea here too is there should be no returns allowed, since you come, inspect, choose to take possession of the goods, why allow for a return? Returns should be at the choice if accepted by the seller. If the seller agrees, then the seller would have to work it out with the buyer, but the whole point is, rather than deal in cash, you at least have a the name and address of the person you are dealing with. Certainly, you do not want to have traffic for your goods, but if you have some LARGE merchandise and want to do LOCAL PICK-UP ONLY.... this was the reason I figured out a very simple way. I was trying to have an APP built but it is very expensive and implementing into the paypal and ebay system COSTS A LOT OF MONEY. But this can and should be also available for those shopping on other venues.

I have some large furniture to find homes for. Some very valuable. Why sell and ship. Most large items are damaged in some way. It's a big risk shipping a $10,000 piece of antique furniture across the country and if the buyer claims damage... you really think I want to provide a return label? lol, NOT REALLY. This was a way to solve my problem and increase my sales, locally for LARGE items. There is no reason to use this for a diamond ring. Unless you feel ok with that. But It is meant for large goods.

I will also be able to get more money for my large items locally as opposed to shipping. If I have a large wood desk available worth $1000, I would probably have to take $600 because it's going to cost the buyer a lot to ship and so prices will be adjusted to help the buyer. Now I can ask what I want and make the deal and get the most for my large items. It's very simple and yes, ebay needs to fine tune it. But when I spoke about this, (if you read my proposal) this should eliminate ALL POSSIBILITIES for a return request, or a damaged request. And now you have the actual ability to accept paypal for large locally sold goods. The goods are inspected and at that time, the buyer realizes, or should know full well, that these items need to be inspected at pickup and there is no returns allowed for any reason. Or it defeats the purpose.  (ebay needs to do this or this won't work.)
