New eBay Proof of Delivery for Local Pick Up Option

For those who offer Local PickUp….ebay is rolling out a Proof of Delivery feature. When the buyer pays online, he gets a QR Code and a six digit number. When he picks up, he shows the code to the seller, who can scan it with his phone and that will then indicate delivered in the shipping area. Don’t want to get close enough to scan? The buyer is also given a six digit code number which he can provide to the seller, and that too will be accepted as proof of delivery.

This is being rolled out, so not everyone may have it today. Also, at this time, this won’t work if Local PickUp was not chosen by the buyer at time of purchase. (Example: Listing does not offer Local Pick Up. Buyer buys item, but then notices he lives in same town as seller, so asks for Local Pick Up. This won’t be available, although it sounds like they might try to add that ability down the line)

I don’t think there’s been a formal announcement yet, but this was discussed in today’s ebay Podcast. https://community.ebay.com/t5/The-eBay-for-Business-Podcast/Episode-88-Checking-In-With-Sellers-Sell...

New eBay Proof of Delivery for Local Pick Up Option

One problem: I didn't get the scan and six digits until after the buyer left. He sent it to me, I sent it to my wife so I could scan it. The site it took me to didn't seem to have anything to do with the sale.

In the app I can't find an "arrange pick up" screen. Their Help section doesn't help.

Can anyone tell me where I can enter the six digits?

There is no place to enter the 6 digit code if you are using the desktop version of the eBay site.

This new scan/6 digit code feature can only be used within the eBay app. I do not use the eBay app so unfortunately I have no information to provide you with about where to enter that code within the app.

But if you and your buyer had a successful in person transaction then I would not spend to much time worring about having to enter the 6 digit code.

During the most recent earnings call, new CEO Jamie Iannone recently used this pick QR code feature as one of several specific examples illustrating his "Tech-led reimagination" vision for eBay.

Describing eBay's opportunity if eBay were to, "really focus our technology effort in those areas that we know are features, tools, capability and new experiences that help buyers and sellers connect,"  Iannone then went on to describe this QR pickup feature as a "magical experience" making the in-person exchange "more seamless":

"A small example of that is, while we don't have a huge pickup business and there's a lot of
categories where people do meet in person to exchange goods and we just made it more
seamless through these QR codes for the buyer and the seller, it's kind of a magical
experience, the money flows and that's the benefit of doing managed payments and
technology together as we can create those experiences for buyers and sellers." - Jamie Iannone, CEO eBay

That's funny. The only magical part of my last local pickup transaction  that happened for me was when the buyer placed 10 Benjamin Franklins in my hand.

The QR/6 digit code feature is everything but magical for sellers like myself who don't use the eBay app, and then later spend an hour or so looking for the spot within the desktop site to enter that code that does not exist.

I can see this feature's usefulness but eBay really needs to add a place on the order details page where sellers who only use eBay through a desktop can enter the 6 digit code, kind of the same way that sellers can manually enter tracking numbers.

From what I can tell BOTH the buyer and seller MUST use the eBay app to complete the local pickup.  I just tested this out using a buyer and a seller account to place a 'local pickup' order. The buyer can only get the 'Local Pickup Code' within the App.   If a person makes the purchase on eBay using their desktop and then wants to pick up the item they won't be able to.  You'll need to explain to them that they need to download the app, get the local pickup code from within the app and then come to pick up the item.  Yea...no thanks....

Please make it so the buyer can access their pickup code from within their desktop version of eBay and/or provide it to them via eBay messages.  I have no interest in explaining this to buyers every time they place a local pickup order.

Upon further testing; it seems to send an email with the code to the buyer but that email is not available in eBay messages or in the eBay interface.   The only place the code exists is in that email.

It is a good move forward to protect sellers and buyers willing to do a local pick up. Once it has rolled out the real question will be with the 6 digit code some buyer will eventually claim the seller tricked them into giving them the code before pick up. I am sure the 6 digit code is purely in case the seller does not have a smart phone , but as there always could be a question as to how the seller got the code it may be a netter requirement for the seller to have a phone that can scan the code. While they may be doing the 6 digit code now while there is a pandemic to support social distancing in the future they may need to reevaluate the effectiveness of having a code and just require a smart phone with QR code scanner as a reequipment for the seller to use the service.

The only problem as I see it with the scenario that you describe above is that that in turn requires the seller to not only have a smart phone (many do not) and if indeed they do have a smart phone then the seller also has to also be willing to download the eBay app onto said smartphone.

I happen to be a seller who has a smartphone but I am in no way shape or form willing to download the eBay app onto my phone. IMO the app is not only a piece of junk but it also gives eBay way to many permissions within my phone as well as access to other activities and data associated with me that are stored within my phone.

As of right now a buyer can text the QR code to the seller at the time of pick up. But that does not really accomplish anything for sellers like myself who insist on only conducting their eBay business on an actual desktop or laptop PC as there is no place for sellers to enter that code given to them by the buyer if the seller only uses an actual PC style device.

eBay could easily fix this problem if they chose to by providing sellers with a manual QR code entry/upload window, similar to the way that sellers who purchase postage at the post office can manually upload tracking numbers taken from their postal receipts.

Is the app working yet?  I had a local pickup recently and the buyer had the six digit code.  I had the QR code.  Neither of them worked.
