My Great Adventure with-eBay Auto Opting into EIS international shipping

Been here since 2002. The eBay EIS international shipping Auto-opt-in turned my eBay biz upside down and on is ear for a few days.  For the record, I have not-shipped internationally for over a decade for all the obvious hassles and reasons.  Well, eBay sent me the auto op-in notice about a week ago and I thought well… Maybe I’ll give it a try.

That lasted about 5 hours. Got two US Domestic orders shortly thereafter and noticed the shipping charges were messed up.  50 cents less than my long-term standard flat rate selections on all items.  Next, I discovered over 2,000 listings were listed as media mail shipping rather than 1st class packages which has been my SOP for over 20 years.   Closer inspection revealed shipping charges on all 2,300 plus store listings had been lowered by at least 50 cents and some by as much $1.50 and more.  My combined shipping discounts and related promotional rules had been eliminated on all listings.

I pondered and I said , ‘going back to where I was,  did the opt-out the “opt-out” which seemed to work, but eBay said something about 24hrs? (Which I found to be a bit confounding, I’m just a country boy).

A check, 2 hours later, revealed an empty eBay store.  I checked and saw many of my colleagues were up I arms over a similar service disruption on the seller board, so, I went and pounded some more caffeine for few more hours and discovered my listings had reappeared.

I attempted to do a series of bulk edits to fix my shipping mess and eBay glitched and puked them all out. Finally, after 2 plus days of messing with it, I thought must have done something right and I submitted the mess…“It sat and spun for in excess of 5 minutes and I thought, "OH no, I am going to lose all the listings". I didn’t touch it, I walked away and came back some time later and things seemed fine!

Next for the heck of it did a check on all my standard promoted listings and discovered they were really messed up.  I went through all of them, over 2,000 and discovered most of the rates were outrageous, up in the 10% to 13.5 % range. (Yes, I had signed up for the auto rate baloney… and yes, I am out of that mess, now back to “manual” rates on standard promoted listings).  For the record.  I found several at 17.5%, one at 30 %, another at 64% and one that was 70%.

SO Beware!

We have gone back to “manual rates"on standard promoted listings.

Truth of the matter is, at least for the time being everything in my store is as it should be.   Back to Pre-opt-in normalcy, waiting for the next eBay policy to come along and throw us into turmoil.

That’s all Folks!🤗

Re: My Great Adventure with-eBay Auto Opting into EIS international shipping

I think because of the eBay shipping labels Postage you might run into a problem with the new EIS International shipping Program. It rather still new. I have everything going USPS where I don't use any eBay shipping labels. I prefer the old system of going to the post office. I don't mind waiting in line to send packages out. Have to admit I think I had maybe one item not received so far this year...it was a foreign country I have never mailed anything to in the past.

yikes!  What a headache.  So happy I didn't do the auto-promoted, I actually had a feeling what you spoke of above would happen. Womens intuition, so happy I have it.

Whoa nelly. That's a pretty crazy story. Thanks for sharing. Glad you handled your damage control. I hope at least you had business policies to help a bit with the shipping charge management.

And selfishly, glad I opted out as soon as I saw my listings opted in (which I believe to be a few hours granted I got the auto-opt email notice over 24 hours after that). Mens intuition (see above reply for reference 😀)

Hi @sensualfriendz  The ad rates you cited do not align with the guidance we have set for suggested ad rates. In order to better understand your experience, our team will be reaching out directly. If you could please contact the askcommunity@ebay.com inbox, so we can verify your account and discuss this with you further that would be great!

Suggested ad rates are calculated based on a variety of factors that may include item attributes, seasonality, past performance, and current competition in order to find an optimal balance between performance and cost. You also have the ability to set an ad rate cap which sets the maximum ad rate you’re willing to spend.
