I listed a item and did not promote it. I sold said item in one day and was charged 13.5 percent plus .30 for a total of $6.12
on a $30.00 item. Why so high? What does variable percentage rate mean? How does it vary? Why am I paying the same rate if not more than some of the items I've promoted in the past? There is no item like this that has been promoted in that category. I wish they would just be more upfront about their fees , all their fees so I know if I want to continue to sell or not. I understand they have to make money but when you feel like you're being victimized by these people really really makes you not want to do it. Another question why do we have ratings on buyers when you can't leave a negative rating when they screwed you over. So why even have a rating system for a buyer?

13.25% plus $0.30 transaction fee is how much you pay for the category you list in.
Here are a couple of links to selling fees policies that you should familiarize yourself with.

The fee passes the reasonableness test for most of the collectible categories.
Fees differ by category.
Fees are clearly disclosed.
Cost of promotion are separate, and there have been free promotions at various times in the past for certain items. You might not have paid a fee for promotion in the past.

$30.00 + $17.05 shipping + (about) $4.70 tax = (about) $51.75
13.25% of $51.75 is $6.85
Sounds about right to me.
" I wish they would just be more upfront about their fees "
They are. They are all right there on the website. You just have to READ them.

The fee is charged on the total amount of the sale not just the item selling price.
That includes the item price, shipping cost and any sales tax the buyer has to pay.
Had you also promoted the item there would have been an additional charge depending on the rate of promotion you chose.
