Multiple IDs

I'm just wondering how many here may have multiple posting IDs and am just wondering why?

I've had this ID forever. Though I know some people like to change theirs every so often - I've been made aware of many with 3,4,5 different postings IDs and I don't understand why that's necessary. To move up on the kudo's board? To show more support for a post that isn't too popular?

We actually have a much smaller community than I thought and now that I'm aware of all these posting IDs - I'll be more conscious of who's posting what.  I was surprised at the multiple IDs some long term posters have.

If there is another reason people feel the need to have all these multiple ID's I'm just wondering what it is.

Re: Multiple IDs

I'm not one to pick up on similarities myself - but the people I heard this from aren't assuming - they actually know these posters. One person I talked to actually did create another ID due to attacks from someone here and I can respect that.

I would hope that we'd all be adult enough to let disagreements slide as no one is always going to agree with each other - I know I don't - but it doesn't stop me from disagreeing with someone in one post and kudoing them in the next if they've given helpful information.

I'm sure not knowing is not a "personal" issue as it surprised me when I found out - I have posted while signed on under my selling ID - I can see that happening, I can see creating another posting ID if you've been attacked but can't see the need for 3-4 strictly individual posting IDS. So I just thought I'd ask.

As I said - it just puts the community as a whole in a different perspective. We're small but a good sampling of Ebay sellers - but with multiple posting IDs - we aren't as big a group as I thought. Also a trust issue comes into play - a person you just disagreed with on a thread where it got heated could be the same person you're engaging with in PMs and not even know it.

Re: Multiple IDs

A few do watch their placement on the helpful boards - I'm not here for a pat on the back - just to learn - hopefully help and correct something if I know it's wrong - besides I overall just enjoy the members here - the awards and kudos should fall by the wayside as not all kudos are awarded for being helpful - I just might agree with someone on a topic.

Re: Multiple IDs

I'm not sure why it should be important.......  To me the content of the message is what we need to be concerned about....  If it's wrong, people jump into correct it.  If it's opinion......well, I can read dozens of the same opinion, but that's probably not going to change mine........

I think some of us have learned (and have the scars to prove it) that stating our opinion once and then letting it go, is probably the best course on these and other boards.  You never "win" an argument even tho a cutesy/funny comment may garner you a bunch of helpfuls.

Re: Multiple IDs

Rumor has it that some use multiple I.D.'s to avoid nasty posters who like to hit the report button for no justifiable reason.  Then when they are "working with someone on the inside," they get those users wrongfully "punished."  Thought you might know a little about that by now.

Re: Multiple IDs

That's exactly why I abandon a lot of threads.  Many get to a point where there is no point in continuing.

or sometimes a slap into the middle of next week (some people have ZERO sense of humour)

eta: WTH can't they fix these boards so stuff doesn't double quote or double post?

Re: Multiple IDs

I have more than one posting id and 3 selling ids. I haven't used my other ones for a long time though now. This is the only current one. There were some issues with the first few - I decided to make a new start and open this one. Anyone can do it, just make sure that you don't reply to yourself or give yourself helpfuls if you do.

Tunicaslot is right - there are many people here who have multiple posting ids. Some are no longer used, but some people like to use two or three at once to confuse people, IMO. And, yes, some people who have already replied to this thread have multiple posting ids. Don't ask how I know.

I have seen that happen as well.

Me, too. It's especially funny when you see a practically trademarked troll comment coming from a different posting ID, and you think, "Ooooops..." Smiley Very Happy

More commonly, I think a lot of people maintaining separate buying and selling accounts tend to use the buying account for posting, since it doesn't give unhappy members an opportunity to mess up the poster's selling account.

Technically, I could see how you could use one posting account to give yourself Kudos -- um, Helpfuls on the other, but that strikes me as rather needy, and probably not all that effective, either, unless you're really trying to do it in bulk. Keep in mind also that you can click on a Helpful count to see all the other accounts who voted for it, so I think any little self-Helpful shilling enterprise would become obvious pretty quickly.

Re: Multiple IDs

I don't care! I just come on here for help, helpful posts, learn more, and sometimes I can give in return!....I don't even look to see if I have badges or whatever they award you. LOL if it helped sales, maybe I'd care!

Re: Multiple IDs

Apart from the board violation of using one ID to interact with the other and the kudos/helpful thing, does it really matter anyway?

Re: Multiple IDs

Hope you weren't inferring anything as the only ones I've ever reported are when someone - usually an OP gets combative when they don't like the advice we give them - I'd rather just say what I have to say on the boards - and I've been told repeatedly to just report but that's not in my nature.

Are you by any chance double-clicking on the Quote button? That'll do it every time. Smiley Wink

Thanks for being honest coins - and I can certainly appreciate possible reasons this may happen. I know one likes to change their ID every three months or so - not to confuse people or pretend to be someone they aren't but just because they get sick of their own IDs.

Re: Multiple IDs

Doesn't matter - I was just curious! A thread different from my sales are down or threads about the same glictches we seem to address everyday. As I said I like the posters here - it feels like family - disagreements and all!
