Messed up for the first time. Need advice.

I got an item from a garage sale that I thought was brand new in box sealed etc.  Someone buys it and I go to print the shipping label and right as I’m packaging I notice that the tape that was used to seal the box has been severed but very thinly and is just barely noticeable. Sure enough the package opens up and I’m sure the contents were taken out at some point although everything is still new/not used. Open box was the listing I should have used. I have contacted the buyer apologizing and asking whether they are ok with this or if they would rather be refunded. The buyer has not responded. What do I do if the buyer does not respond? I am supposed to ship it out in 2 days. I am going to keep reminding them each day but what do I do if they don’t get back to me?

thanks.

I will consider these suggestions. It was a pair of headphones sold for 68$ which was priced cheaper than other listings so it was a pretty good deal for a new pair. I would be happy to knock off another 10$ for the buyer due to my mistake which is probably what I will do if they still want it. I wish they would just answer me!!!

Yes, I do, too.  It's hard to be in this situation and have to wait on the buyer to get back to you.  Very frustrating.  I hope it all works out well for you, hopefully you will hear from them very soon!

Yes for an item at that price I think a discount is good.  Keep in mind, though, that if the buyer was purchasing it as a gift, used versus new is a big deal.

Just do the best you can.  That's all you can do.

I had this happen - it was a minor condition issue but I hadn't mentioned it because I hadn't seen it. I didn't hear back so I finally sent a partial refund for the difference in condition, made sure I printed out an invoice reflecting this and enclosed it in the package with a note as well as emailed.  My buyer was very happy with the fact that I had been proactive.

Just give it the time you have, I'd just send one more note before you ship saying that since you hadn't heard, you were going to do XYZ (whatever you decide to do).

Did the same thing, had the same response.  Buyers are generally happy with honesty.

I would ship it anyway with an explanation that you tried to contact them . I know as a buyer this wouldn't bother me as long as the item was new and okay.  Tulips

Thanks for the advice. Can I partial refund through eBay or do I have to do it through PayPal? I have never partial refunded before.

Don't worry about that just yet . The buyer may think you had to open the box just to make sure everything was good before shipping it out .  I don't think the chances are high  that this will bother the buyer to the point of needing a partial refund ..  Just wait and see before you dish out any money ,, you may not need to. I told the buyer exactly what happened which was that I made a listing error. I sent them a note with the package. Hoping for the best.

If the buyer doesn’t care I might not refund because then we both win. If they seem annoyed or disappointed then I will do whatever they want which is a refund or discount. I just hope I don’t get ripped off.

Hi, You can cancel the order, then click the option wrong address. As long as you tried to contact the buyer. This is what I was told from E-Bay & I did it that way. There were no issues. i kept the item for 1 month no reply, so then I relisted it. Hope this helps you...

First, garage sale items are not brand new, never under any circumstances whether the box appears sealed or not, just good to remember that for the future. If you cannot verify 100% the chain of custody for the item, and whatever may have happened to it between when it was actually new, and when you get it, you simply cannot honestly sell it as brand new, sealed, whatever. I know some people will argue with this but so far most of the  advice you have received is aimed at simply avoiding the responsibility for your mistake and putting the customer in a position of not receiving what they paid for.

If you went online and bought something that was advertised as brand new in a box, never opened or used and you received something that obviously did not match that description would you be ok with that? I know I wouldn't and I doubt most would be. At the absolute very least I would insist on having been offered the choice of whether or not I still wanted it before having it just show up.

You made a mistake, it happens, even to the best of us. Take it as a learning experience, do better in the future, work really hard to do better in the future. The one thing you can't do is  expect a buyer to simply be ok with it because you or anyone else thinks it's no big deal. That's not your call to make under any circumstances.

If the end result of your mistake is that you take a ding well you're going to take a ding, that's the price for the mistake, that's what happens when you screw up. Rarely is making a mistake or screwing up a situation without blowback or consequences.

My advice to you, and this is coming from someone who has been in business 30 years and is quite secure in the knowledge that I know I am right in what I am telling you, is to not ship it until you have contacted the buyer. You offer them the opportunity to decide what will happen. You don't take that choice away by any methodology or pre empt it no matter how good your intentions.

Best of luck.

Cheers.

Might be a little late to ask this, but since the box was open anyway, you did test the headphones I hope?

The op's item does match the description . It's just that they hadn't noticed the box had been opened . That's a bit different from the item itself not matching the description . I have purchased items in department stores  where it's quite obvious  the box had been opened and then resealed . That has never bothered me as long as the product  is new,  intact and all parts are there . However  people can have a different  view  on this . I still think the odds are that the op's buyer  isn't going to have a problem  with his order . Tulips
