Local Pickup Only---Can a return be filed after they pick up and take it?

If you list something as "local pickup only" and the buyer comes, pays for it, and then takes it can they later (days or weeks later) file for a refund?

If so and you agree to refund and receive the item back, is the buyer required to return it back to you in person just as they came and picked it up in person?

Yes, the buyer can file for a return (remorse, INAD, etc.) but they have 30 calendar days to do so, unless you have specified 60 day returns.

Your second question ("required") is a good one... my instinct says yes, since that was the way the sale was initially processed and concluded.

When the buyer picked up the item, did you or he scan something validating that the item had in fact been picked up?

If buyer pays, picks up, then requests refund: Seller can agree or decline.
If seller agrees to refund: Buyer should return item in person.

Agree with the other responses, they can definitely request a refund, and depending on the reason you may be able to decline or if it's something like Item Not As Described, I'm not sure that it wouldn't be forced just like any other return (though I haven't dealt with that specifically).

As for the return method, they can return it in person or I suppose if you agree, they could ship it at their own cost, but that seems unlikely in most cases.

Seller can agree or decline.

If it's filed as INAD & the seller declines, it won't end well for the seller

Returns for local pickup listings should be treated the same as other delivery options. If the buyer returns an item because it's faulty or it isn't as described in the listing, they can return it to you even if your return policy states you don't accept returns.

I was told by a mod several years ago that there is no absolute with returning a pick up only item. That they are decided on a case by case basis, and dont always rule in favor of the buyer, because the buyer was able to examine the item with pick up. Of course the buyer can also try PP or their cc,but they would have the same criteria with pick up items.

Problems of forcing a return or refund are not concerning if you got paid CASH on Pick-Up.  Those that accept an eBay Managed Payment, not so much.  Though I only recall a couple of posts here (from a few years ago),  when an "Item not described" claim was filed after an item was picked up,  and an online payment was used, sellers were told to provide a return label.   This of course, was the advice given by the regular CS agents, who are notorious for giving wrong advice coupled with the eBay bot system that is in place for returns.

It would be best to tag a board "blue" or ask eBay via a social media portal for the latest information.

Returns for local pickup listings should be treated the same as other delivery options. If the buyer returns an item because it's faulty or it isn't as described in the listing, they can return it to you even if your return policy states you don't accept returns.

If the buyer simply changed their mind and you stated in your listing that you don't accept returns, you're not obliged to accept their return request. See our article on how to handle a return request as a seller for more information.

To protect yourself against item-not-received cases, proof of pickup is required.

Re: Local Pickup Only---Can a return be filed after they pick up and take it?

My big concern is that I am getting older and am having back problems.

I cannot pack/ship large, heavy items like I used to anymore.

So, I want to list some of the large, heavy items as local pickup only in person and I just want to make sure if the buyer files a return request that they are the ones required to deliver it back to me, not me have to go pick it up from them.

For the most part, it's going to come down to how the buyer pays.

If they pay cash on pickup, eBay will not step in on any return requests. It will be between you and the buyer to work out.

If the buyer pays through eBay they will have MBG coverage. If it's the type of item that can be inspected on pickup, supposedly the buyer isn't covered per what eBay reps said on this forum in the past, but there's nothing specific in the MBG about that and it was quite a while ago so the info could be outdated. If the rule still exists, it's an internal eBay rule. Per published policies, buyer is covered unless a third party picks it up on their behalf.

If it's something that, for example, they have to plug in and test like a washing machine, and they don't find out it doesn't work until they get it home and try to use it, they will be covered by eBay. If that happens, you are required to make return arrangements, whether it's getting the buyer to agree to bring it back, whether it's you going to pick it up, whether it's providing a prepaid shipping label, or whether it's arranging someone else to pick it up for you - or refunding without requiring a return is also an option.

You can say in a listing that you prefer cash on pickup, but you cannot require it.

Re: Local Pickup Only---Can a return be filed after they pick up and take it?

That’s incorrect. The buyer is still covered by eBay’s Money Back Guarantee, even with local collection, as long as it was paid through eBay. If the item isn’t as described and the seller requests a return, it’s the seller’s responsibility to arrange for a courier or postal service to get the item back.
