Several times in my illustrious long E-Bay career, I have had several return requests for items because they "smelled". I can not even begin to describe my dismay over this because I am blessed/cursed with a super strong olfactory sense..I have a nose like a bloodhound and can smell anything and everything and NOTHING gets sold if something has an odor OTHER THAN LAUNDRY DETERGENT..My last escapade was with a LE SPORTSAC purse where buyer claimed it stank so much they had to leave it outside. UH...I don't think so. And you all know the outcome. REFUND the lying, prevaricating inventing conniving buyer. Got the purse back today and voile~~fragrant free...This, of all the egregious misadventures I have had with buyers is always the worst because a seller has no way to disprove odors..How I wish Ebay would just negate this claim and save us buyers the heartache and aggravation and loss of funds. Rant over

You run a risk with your Returns Not Accepted policy. No returns doesn't mean no refunds, and it invites buyers to create INAD reasons. Be grateful when there's not damage or substitution.
As for odor, in this particular case: I, myself, don't have a sensitive nose but I know people who do and the smell of laundry detergent can bother them a lot.
Just a couple of things to think about.

What kind of response do you consider helpful then? Would you rather just have us say yeah you are right , the buyer is wrong, without offering any possible solution?
Unfortunately, I was going to offer about the same "unhelpful" response. I have a return policy, and do get a few returns a year, and most are for remorse. A return policy allows a return for any reason, so a buyer that really just doesn't want to keep the item and is determined to return it, can do so without making up a false reason.

A, I don't need a lecture on how I do business.
B, if something smells laundered, IT's MENTIONED
C. This thread is about conniving dishonest people creating fake scenarios in which to return an item due to buyer's remorse in which an honest seller, like myself, always loses..

That is the crux of my entry here. It's about dishonest people screwing honest sellers.

I guessed that your post may be just to hear others agreeing with you. That's fine, but what does that accomplish. Based on your feedback, it looks like you have had plenty of good buyers, but if it helps to bash a few others that didn't work out, then carry on.
In fairness, you did post that an earlier response wasn't helpful, so it sounded like you were asking for possible help in avoiding false not as described returns. I stand by my earlier response offered as help when you asked how to save us buyers (I assume you meant sellers) the heartache and aggravation and loss of funds.

as a seller you will need to rise above it..............just like your descriptions state "final sale"
is it final sale or final say......we both know why people make up reasons...because they can and its convenient
ebay has the final say on the matter......
my suggestion woud be to go for TRS..........you seem to have no trouble with your selling and good stats
there are many intangible assets when you offer 30 day free returns
it sounds scarier than it is but you know you end up taking things back so why put up a fuss
keep on selling

Well, if you had a brick & mortar store, as I ran for decades, you would be dealing with shoplifters on a daily basis. Dishonest people are dime a dozen out there, even in the highest places.

I had one once buy an item that I stated had issues, get the item, complain about the same issues I mention and complain it smelled of smoke.
it wasn't clothing or handbags, it was an electric powered model that was somewhat old. They tend to get electrical and other smells to them.
But, genius who couldn't bother to read insisted on a return so it came back and I had to eat the shipping.
I had another one a few weeks ago who started to complain and I reminded him it said several times in the listing what was wrong with the item, a common design issue with them, and fortunately seem to have headed that one off. People don't even read what they're buying, so of course they're going to make up excuses to return items.

Here is a simple example that happened to us.
Buyer purchases a brand new item in factory manufacturer foam packed box. Fairly heavy item and costs us about $50 to ship ( even with the ebay shipping discounts). Then later orders another one. So we have about $100 in shipping costs to him. Time goes by, then 2 cases opened INAD. Says they are "used and not new". While we know that is not true, we asked for a picture to see what he got as they are still factory packed and sealed boxes. No communication at all so we decide lets offer him $50 for each case as that’s what it would cost us for return shipping and he can scam us for that the amount. Immediately refuses the partial refund saying “ I do not want them anymore”. We expected as much as the return was really “buyer remorse”, though buyers are smart enough not to use that as reason or they would be out the $100 to ship them back to us. So we pay return shipping to get the items back to us. One eventually shows up never opened or anything ( figured as much). The next one shows up, opened, busted in pieces with most broken pieces in a bag they used. It is clear they opened it, dropped it, then threw it back in the box.
So we were out of pocket $200 for shipping both ways as well as one unsellable product.
Kicker of the story....interestingly enough the buyer and address is a lawyers office. I would never expect a lawyer to lie and pull a scam.
