If I don't pay for "promoted" is it being hidden?! Common item w/ZERO views 15 days later.

Isn't the huge cut Ebay takes out of the total sale supposed to cover the cost of using their platform?  Why do they "suggest" ANOTHER NINE PERCENT for "promoting"....?  And why do a lot of my items (that are reasonably common, say 10 are always listed at any given time, maybe 5 sell on average per week, and my perfectly and correctly listed (but no % agreed to under the "promoted" program) not even show up in specific search results? Even when mine is brand new AND the cheapest one listed?  I don't get even A SINGLE VIEW on the lowest priced of 10 similar items listed even 2 weeks later?!

This happens to me A LOT,  and I'm sure I can't be the only one.  It's one thing to be extorted to pay additional to get items promoted at an extra cost, but does anyone else feel that by not paying at all your listings are actually surpressed...?

But if I sell a 1987 Doohickey Part# 123456789HL and there are. 5 for sale, 6 sold or unsold, and someone searches "Doohicky Part #123456789HL" on day 3 of the listing, IT SHOULD AT LEAST SHOW UP WITH THE OTHER 5 ITEMS WITH THE EXACT SAME TITLE.  This is what I mean. If I pay the 5% it shows up in search results.  IF I DON'T it doesn't show up.  That should not be.

If you can provide and exact example it would be more helpful. I ran a test on a couple of your listings and provided that information up post but without more information there is no way to substantiate what you are claiming.

As I mentioned in a prior response it also depends on the parameters of the search.

Nope.  I'm talking about one item that has a very specific part number, and there are 8 online on average, half sell each week, 4 new ones come on each week, and mine doesn't even get a VIEW.  And I KNOW because people in a car group search the part number and mine doesn't come up. AT ALL.

I agree.
Exact Match items not showing up in search, when they should show up.
And when you view the sold items,   The prices are all over the place JUST like what's showing up for sale.
BUT, you are not being picked on by eBay.  Well, not any more so than "most" anybody else.
I think they treat "most" all of us this way.

Yes.  Once I add 5% they sell within a week.  Until that they don't even get a view, despite being often-searched for items with limited availablity, and mine almost always priced lower than any others.  They aren't even viewed until I add the 5% promotion fee.

Your luck is better than mine.
I can promote everything at 15% continuous.   Get sales for a few days, then back to normal.

I don't think the answer is promoting.  (I don't really think there is an answer right now).

If search just pulled up the words that were searched, and put listings in order of how you asked?
All would be well

@bluedesk7 , Here, all take this one.
I have five duramax exhaust manifold heat shields.  I made a listing, qty 5.   Within a week or so, I sold two of them to different buyers.   I don't know how these buyers ran their searches.  (were they looking exactly for that item, or did they just see it and remember they needed one?)  I don't know.   BUT, it's been awhile since I've sold one, and I have three left.
SO, I ran a search.
Duramax LMM Exhaust Manifold.  (used) then (low$est 1st).

Where is my $28.50 listing?
I then switch to sold.  THERE IT IS!  (but quantity three still available).
I switch back to what's available on eBay?
Mine are not there.

Yes you are being suppressed 100 percent by eBay . I know for sure watching over a 23 year period how eBay works and this is the newest thing for them to make more money . Know this it will never be about how to help your business survive or thrive with ebay . It’s always about eBay making money off of you .In the end they don’t care about the consumer also as you will have to adjust to make your profit this costing more for the buyer.

Love this post - Its the elephant in the room - The elephant's getting bigger and the room's getting smaller - too hard to ignore, in my most humble opinion...

I have run searches with exact title wording and seen the listing come up quite a few down the list with unrelated items ahead of them.  Promotion is fine EBay, but  don't make our customers search in the medicine aisle for a hammer just because you've got a lot of medical products that paid to be promoted. I'll just start going to sites that don't waste my time.

I have never used PL and never will but there would be no logic or incentive for eBay to suppress seller listings based simply on whether the seller used PL or did not use PL. Given two listings for the exact same item and all else being equal, with one using PL at 2% and the other not using PL which results in the biggest revenue for eBay.

Item 1 - Price $120 not using PL

Item 2 - Price $100 using 2% PL

Granted the buyer is probably going to see and purchase Item 2 because of the use of PL but which would have made eBay the most revenue?

I have never had that happen when using exact searches can you provide an example? How did you rack and stack the search results?

If your item(s) are not getting any views and not selling, that means nobody is interested.

Many of us (including myself) don't use promoted listings yet people are able to find and buy our items just fine.

I'm a part timer seller with about 350 items listed. I had 8 orders for 11 items over the weekend.

Yeah, THAT is completely wrong.   If I'm not getting views that means nobody's interested?  WRONG. You just haven't been in the scenario where you can see it clearly.  If Tom Cruise signs 10 blue hats on a morning talk show and throws them into the crowd, 5 people get home that night and list them.  If all 5 people selling their hat list it as "2024 Tom Cruise Signed Blue Hat" on Ebay, if I list mine with zero promoted listings, I WILL GO AT LEAST A WEEK WITHOUT ONE VIEW.  If everyone lists their hat at $700-$900 and I list mine at $500 and I get NO VIEWS?   I'm being hidden.  Probably because I only sell 50 items a month, but all 5 items with the same listing title SHOULD ALL SHOW UP AT THE SAME TIME.   There's no way you'll convince me that people looking to flip these won't click on the listing with the lowest price NOT ONCE in 7-15 days.  Come on.  And this happens CONSTANTLY.

Re: If I don't pay for "promoted" is it being hidden?! Common item w/ZERO views 15 days l

Yes it is . But not on all things. I believe it is just when competing with promoted listing. I have posted about this before. Now I have a item that about 30 to 40 people sell. I got 1000+ of this item in new box sealed for next to nothing. People sell them from $14 ish to $50 on avg So I posted them at the  lower end of comparable pricing on ebay $19.  I got 0 view for 10 days. The listings fits most of the others on the site.  So then I posted them below anyone else. for a a week $9 still no views. so I put them back up to what i had them at.  and I have been witching others sell the same item.  Also my son has a store and it has been the same way. We have been seeing this for about a year.

Re: If I don't pay for "promoted" is it being hidden?! Common item w/ZERO views 15 days l

Wow!  We are walking in the same pair of old shoes and keep doing the same thing over and over again.  I've even thought the same thing about eBay sending out reps to get to know you, find  out what you sell, and what your personal strategies are in selling.  I've been selling for 12 years and my sales have not gone up either on an annual basis, but my new strategy is to start selling something else along with what I currently sell in my niche.

I also feel like I'm working my tail off 24/7 and getting nowhere and when it comes to what the gal inquired about -- I've learned if I don't promote, generally everything at 10%, then my listings won't show up either, but boy all of the new sellers will keep those slots.  Twelve years ago when I was a new seller, I had to constantly fight to be seen.  I can't  even count the number of times, sometimes in tears, that I've called a representative and practically begged them to show my listings.

No seller should have to fight to have their items show up in those top pages like I have, and I'm sure there are others such as yourself.  I've got the pictures, I've got the item descriptions and the specifics, the body of my listing covers everything and is an enjoyable read.  I've been complemented repeatedly about the quality of my listings by my buyers.  However, eBay still doesn't help  and I too can't help but feel that the placement of listings is controlled ulttiimately by a human who is evidently not swayed by their intelligence,   probably not knowing anything about the category itself.

However, I have learned that if I don't have auctions running every week, that eBay seems to limit the number of fixed priced items being seen and will  specificaly back off somewhat on promoting my items.  At the same time, they are somewhat tricky regarding how they manage to get more out of that item   you sold at auction.  I've found they will go ahead and click on that item to be promoted as well,   because I have specifically not wanted my "auction" items promoted and low and behold it will suddenly appear on my listings.

None of what I've suggested can be proven specifically and overall is speculation, but my annual sales barely moving after 12 years is very factual.  I think that eBay does not consider the buyers when it comes to whoever they promote on those first pages, I think that all they think about is the potential money they might get.  It makes no sense to me than to blast buyers with a bunch of new sellers who could and often do mess up an order in some way because they don't have any experience.

I'm sorry, probably what I've written is just a jumble of nonsense, but I'll probably continue to pay eBay through the nose and call them crying for another 12 years regardless of my own common  sense which is to pack up and go sell on a completelly  different platform.

i think that’s exactly what’s happening. if you don’t pay for promotion your listings will never be seen. and think about how disgusting this is for the buyer. if you search for a common item, you put in the filters brand new and cheapest. and because the seller didn’t pay for promotion, the actual cheapest one is not what pops up. that is an absolute joke. ebay is garbage, plain and simple. we’re just stuck with it until there’s a rival site that shows up. it sure will be fun when it does though and we can all watch ebay go down in flames.

Answer: No, it is not hidden.

It just may be harder to find.

I don't participate in promoted listings.
