I am a new seller on eBay and have been selling some of my old camera gear. I sold a camera body and in my listing I mentioned that the item includes the camera body, the strap, the front cap, the manual, and the original box. I did not include batteries or charger because they are still useable for my upgraded camera system.

I sold the item, and now the buyer is complaining that the item is “not as described” because he says the term “camera body” automatically includes a battery and charger. On similar listings on eBay, I saw sellers specifically mention when batteries are included. I didn’t think I had to explicitly mention what wasn’t included.

I offered to accept the return at which point I will offer a refund, but now the buyer is saying he will open a claim against me and will not return the camera until he is refunded.

Am I in the wrong here? Did I do something wrong by not mentioning what is not included? I realize I could’ve been more explicit, but I it didn’t cross my mind because I thought I had stated exactly what was being sold.

Assume nothing that is something everyone should be taught , eBay breeds carelessness so that all goes out the window with their politices why be logical or do any research before buying if big daddy has your back, it's ridiculous, like I said anyone who isn't either a scammer or a complete idiot who shouldn't even be on the internet or using a computer would be doing some research and asking questions and not making outlandish assumptions or surmising if it's not in the pictures or descriptions that it's mysteriously included, eBay allows even a rocket scientist to be an idiot with their policies though and I find that to be a problem.

Yes, but that's a lot of eBay mumbo-jumbo that's not particularly helpful (the mumbo-jumbo, not your post). I try to deal in practical solutions to things, eBay doesn't.

Batteries go bad and have to be trashed, chargers get lost, there is no reason you should have to sell a perfectly good working camera as "for parts, not working" just because it doesn't have a battery or a charger. But you do have to make it clear there's no battery or charger and one will be needed. The correct condition is "used - no battery or charger". That's easy enough to type out, but it's very difficult to pick from eBay's limited condition choices which, based on what you're saying, do not cover this sellers item at all.

People sell cameras that they didn't buy new, they have absolutely no idea if the battery/charger originally came with the camera or not.

There was a post here a couple of days ago, guy wants to list a non-working watch. eBay has an entire category for Watches-Not Working, Parts Only. But the listing form only offers contitions (new, excellent used, etc.) for working watches... there is no "Non-Working Parts Only" condition for a category that is entirely dedicated to "Parts Only" items! eBay is not always very helpful.

I hear you. Buyers will buy a unicorn and assume it's true if they know they can get back out of their purchase with absolutely no cost whatsoever (MBG or Free Returns) later. Oh, look at that pretty picture, go ahead, buy that unicorn!

That's a bad way to run mail order.

That was my topic it didn't get as much response as I had hoped though, I still don't know what the heck will happen with it, it seems as if eBay want to leave a nitpicky person every possible angle to return and not read that's all I can come up with basically the type of people who shouldn't be buying a for parts or not working item in the first place they want to give them an out.

If you refund before you get your camera back, you will be out the camera.

None of what OP did or did not do is not relevant at this point.

Return for Refund period.

I have several digital cameras. They all use the same charging cable.

That was my topic it didn't get as much response as I had hoped though...

I'd try posting that over on syed's Product Catalog Board. I had some Item Specific issues with some coin albums and folders, he was able to get someone from another team (the taxonomy team, I think) to actually fix the Item Specifics for them.

Post #2 is how to deal with the problem now, although if he and the buyer can talk to each other, a partial refund to buy a battery and charger, or sending the old ones to him and you get the new ones, can be a solution too. But all any seller is obligated to do is "return for refund".

This isn't an attempt by anyone to scam anybody. The over-reaction here on the Board, in both directions, is just breathtaking.

That word sure gets overused these days.

Not every buyer is a scammer, anymore than every seller is a scammer.

I would have expected batteries unless it was explicitly said Battery not Included.

That being said Return for Refund.

We all have all learned that lesson the hard way.

Not every buyer is a scammer, anymore than every seller is a scammer.

Anyone who costs me money because they are indecisive, don't ask questions or don't do their own research might as well be a scammer because they are costing me money like a scammer.

The camera sensor also isn't shown or mentioned. Should the buyer accept one without it?

These cameras are sold WITH a battery. They can't be operated without it. It's expensive, and isn't something that your local store will stock, so it requires another round of shopping and waiting to acquire one. OP should have stated that it wasn't included.

Piece of cake. Let him open his case and sit patiently waiting for his refund. When after 5 business days he hasn't shipped it back, call Ebay customer service and have the case closed in your favor.

You are not in the wrong. You stated clearly what was included, and the buyer is demanding additional items that were NOT included - a violation of Ebay policy.

Digital SLRs come with a charging "dock"; the battery is removed from the camera, placed in the dock, which is then plugged into an outlet. The chargers aren't interchangeable.
