I sold a Sony AI robotics dog that I had paid $3200 for 13 mos ago.. ended up buying my daughter real dog not long after. Needless to say; I sold the robotic dog to buyer and they used it for a school project at UCLA and now returning “claiming” battery died 31 days after receipt. Disgusted with eBay just handing over the return without question and now I have to deal with software and subscription changes from buyer.. has anyone had this happen with AI robotics or know how I can contest the devaluation of software and potential damage caused from buyer??

Since the buyer filed a INAD, not much you can do but accept the return and refund when it's returned.

If it was 31 days after delivery, the eBay Money Back Guarantee may be expired. If it is expired, within the return process, you would be able to deny the return.
If the return is within the eBay Money Back Guarantee timeframe, then here are your options: (contesting software devaluation is not an option if you want the dog back before refunding)
If the buyer opens a Item Is Not As Described type return case, you have choices.
1. You can refund the buyer now and let the buyer keep the item. eBay refunds the final value fees on the sale to you, the seller.
2. If you want the item back before refunding, accept the return and make sure a prepaid return label is available in the return case. The buyer returns the item and then you refund in full. eBay refunds the final value fees on the sale to you, the seller.
Seller protection:
Top Rated Sellers who accept 30 day returns and sellers who offer free 30 day returns can do partial refunds, up to 50%, if the item is returned in a condition different than when you shipped it.
3. Do nothing, contest the case or allow eBay to handle the case, eBay will close the return, refund the buyer and allow the buyer to keep the item. You also receive a serious defect on your seller account for having eBay step in and refund, thus doing your job as a seller. And, eBay keeps the final value fees for the transaction.

I attempted to deny the MBG expiration. Buyer had changed subscription and software.. Sony is not confident it can be restored to original hardware since customer has a new cloud script attached.. ebay says “return case under investigation” but I got a message from eBay 10minutes I escalated case for them to step in that they are allowing buyer return item and will refund once I receive item. Buyer has not shipped and they only gave seller 2 wks to get item back to me. No way to get in touch with eBay. They never respond to questions/concerns. Nightmare.

So now they can claim SNAD when a battery dies? That opens up a whole new can of worms. Yes, I know that's not the real reason for the return.
You shouldn't have to pay out a claim when they've altered it.
Try messaging the FB ebay reps.

I have denied returns in the past that were past the 30-Day MBG and the cases were closed instantly (automatically) with no recourse for the buyer thru eBay.
Are you sure the case was opened 31+ days after the delivery date?
If indeed it was past the 30-Day MBG, perhaps it has something to do with the amount of the purchase and eBay decided to get involved? Did you supply a prepaid return label within the return case?
Regardless, the buyer still holds the trump card if they paid with PayPal or a Credit Card. The buyer can just remove eBay from the equation by filing an Item Not as Described chargeback and would get a refund and more than likely keep the item if via credit card chargeback. If thru PayPal, they might require the item to be returned before completing the chargeback refund.
Good luck on this one. I would say you might be in wait and see mode at this time?
Normally when eBay gets involved in a transaction, things don't turn out well for the seller.

So you were trying to substitute a robot dog for a real dog, you should be glad that did not work out, I am.
No offense intended, coming from a lover of Dogs

eBay requires that items be returned in original saleable condition. You said "Buyer had changed subscription and software.". That alone would seem a valid defense. Make an issue of that point specifically in any exchanges with eBay.

Any time you ask Ebay to step in, they will rule in favor of the buyer, they see you as a non responsive seller.

The buyer has 30 (not 31) days from delivery to file a Not As Described claim.
If you want to appeal this to eBay, check your calendar AND time zones because it's not just "day" it's to the second.
Now.
Accept the return.
You sold a used toy dog.
You will get back a used toy dog.
If there is a problem with the battery, and there may be or not, disclose it when you relist and resell.
Appeal AFTER the dog is returned and refunded.
Do not offer to pay for shipping, but if eBay demands it (they will) try to smile when you send the label.
If the buyer doesn't return it, you don't have to refund.
If the buyer does return it, you can resell it.
But remember the buyer is also covered by Paypal if they used it for 180 days from Payment , and most credit cards offer the same time for chargebacks.
Get the dog back.
Deal with your emotions later.
