How do you put a value on this?

A vintage snapshot photo of an Israel fighter with an UZI.  How can you figure out what a collector would even pay for something like this?  It's all a guessing game.  The "Don't price it high" crowd will chime in.  What is high?   lol  What is low?  😛

Prices on items like that vary as the crow flies.  If you could research any info such as who  and when it can help.

Someone might pay $1,000+ for that photo.

Others wouldn't want it if you gave it to them.

Because (like you said) it's so hard to place  a value on this item,  I would price at ... how much I wanted to make.  If it sells, great.  If it doesn't, consider lowering the price.

Good luck!

If you know the market, you make an educated guess.

If you know collectors or people who know the market, you ask them.

If you can find sales results for similar items, you use it as a guide.

If all those fail, you post on a message on the eBay seller board.

You start it as low as you are willing to go on an auction and see what happens.  I doubt it is worth much as it is just a kid wearing an ill fitting cova tembel holding an uzi probably posing at some kibbutz.  It is certainly no Israeli "fighter".  And it is not in great condition.  If it were me, I would start the bidding at $9.99 with free shipping.

Have you seen what other photos of a person holding a weapon have sold for?  Perhaps that could give you a ballpark figure.  Otherwise, start at a price that you think you will be happy with.  If you see no one has looked at the photo, start lowering the price.   Goodluck.

If I where to list it, seeing how it is in terrible condition, I would list for $5.95 starting price at auction.

To establish value, you must establish what you have, not make guesses or assumptions about it.  If that is an "Israeli fighter," I will eat my hat and yours.

If you can't read Hebrew, you go some place like Lexilogos and start entering what you see to get a rough translation.

How would you know that fact about being a fighter?  Just because he isn't in a uniform?  How many Ukraine citizens are fighting for their country & not in uniform?  He could be a citizen fighting for his country in 1 way or another.

If you can determine a date for the photo, it would definitely effect the price.

Hard to tell if that is a young man or a young woman; but, if the photo is from 1948, it may picture a youth fighter in the Haganah, although there is a possibility that the individual may also be a member of Irgun, and even a remote possibility of the Stern Gang.

If later, perhaps the Six-Day War (1968); or the War of Attrition (1967-1970); or the Yom Kippur War (1973).

The earlier the year, the higher  the selling price.

So, when you run the text through Lexilogos, or use some translation app on a smartphone, what do you get?  Info about a photographer will always give you info about the subject, date, etc.

Here, I'll even get you started:

https://www.lexilogos.com/keyboard/hebrew.htm

Remember that it is read right to left, so you would enter  פוטו

(which means "photo")

When you sell collectibles, antiques, and the like, your profit is only as good as your research.

Absolutely.   And when OP does his research by translating all that info about the photographer, he will very likely be able to date it, at least within a specific range.

I see this is listed as "Israel Fighter," dated as "1950s-1960s," and described "NRMT -- MT condition".   I am sorry I wasted your time and mine trying to help you identify and date it.  Oh, well, you've taught me a good lesson and in future will know better.

Well, you asked:

With the advent of the internet I can get ANY photo of ANY era and print it in ANY size for the price of the paper & ink.

I can't, in my WILDEST dreams, understand why ANYONE would pay a nickel for an 'old photo' that can be had by the Millions for free on the internet??
