Help! Torn on how to handle this.

Buyer purchased a lovely japanese custom moriage plate. Shipped in bubble wrap, 3 times. Put into a solid wood box. Put into a larger box wrapped in bubble wrap 3 times  and filled with peanuts. It wasn't going anywhere.

Receive email today. Plate totally smashed. Asked for photo's as I had insurance on the plate and then I would refund.

Oops.....sent the plate as a present to her sister. No phone, no internet. Say's could return via post office, but that nullifies insurance.

What's the next step?

OVER.

Please note I DID ask her to return for a refund.

So she has revealed herself to be a complete scammer with asking you to not contact who it was sold to. That's a trump card right there, and you hold tight onto that phone number should you need it at some point.

Now report this buyer for abuse.

Would you please send me a little note, because I sell Japanese moriage too, sometimes rather expensive pieces. I would like this person to be included on my best buddy list.

I'm lost on one detail--is she or is she not returning anything?

One more thought--don't sell items too cheaply, no good deed goes unpunished. It attracts flippers, the worst kind, the thieves. I am in this business and surrounded by thieves, and I know a lot of lying dealers. I stay as far away from the ones I know IRL as possible.

You might want to do an internet search also. You might find your plate sold on Rubylane or Etsy or some other site, and then you can connect the dots to their selling ID, or possibly here directly on ebay.

Re: Help! Torn on how to handle this.

did this plate go from you to her? from you to the sister? from you to her then to the sister? if it went from you to her then to her sister, my question would be.... why in the world would anyone send their own sister a broken plate?  if this IS the case it smells a bit fishy & i may be inclined to bring this fact to ebays attention. even though i know how we all hate dealing with ebay cs.

Thank you so much. I did as much research on the plate and think I fairly priced it. It was an absolutely lovely plate by Tutanka. I knew I should have kept it. It would have been a lovely focal piece with my other Japanese items. slight_frown

Oh yes, I will be reporting this buyer.

Re: Help! Torn on how to handle this.

Thanks!

I looked it up, yes nice. You did price it right I agree, so this is odd. I sell mostly older Nippon beaded stuff and I don't know the enameled pieces that well, so that is interesting and I will be on the look out for it.

Seller's remorse--I sold something earlier this year, regretted it, so I turned around and bought 3 more of them on ebay. Now there's something else I want that I sold and so I search for it daily, Crazy, huh?

I'm about 90/10 with you on the scam, and gone.  That other 10 fears that you are not done here.  PayPal/CC chargeback 😞

Okay, pretty obvious she's lying. What is she requesting? Can you not just tell her to return for refund and see how she responds?

That's what I intend to do. She said that her sister could return it. I told her however that nullifies my insurance. Just the same she will have her buyer return the item to me and I have to refund her. What a joke.

Interestingly, I think I might phone the purchaser on record.

if you shipped to the address provided with the PP payment, why would it nullify the insurance?

The plate was sent to the address she put on the eBay record, however I have a feeling I've just been hit in that I've willingingly mailed to someone else's customer, if you get my drift.

Doesn't matter, really; let's just deal with the task at hand. Tell the buyer that you'll be happy to wait until they can get a clear photo or two over to you so you can file the insurance claim. Do not go off on tangents to explain rules 'n' regs of insurance claims, etc.; just keep the focus on the buyer, and how reasonable it is that they'll be able to provide a clear photo or two so you can get started.

I know that the official procedure is to refund the buyer and then file the claim, but if their first maneuver here is to offer up a ludicrous excuse for why they can't send a photo up front, then playing innocent and offering to wait for the photo to be provided would be worth a try, especially considering the $100 sale price.

P.S. After reading the other replies here... yes, you could just ask to have the plate back for a refund, too. Forget the voiding-the-insurance routine: if it's busted, the USPS will tell you that it was improperly packed anyway (assuming it doesn't have tire tracks on it or something). Keep communications BRIEF, polite and businesslike. Once they realize that they're not getting an easy refund with no evidence provided, they may just move on.

i am probably missing something in the OP's situation.

i always ship to the address associated with the payment.

not sure why the OP says the insurance won't work?

not something anyway that should concern the buyer.

by the way "ac" have only had a few USPS claims.

can't remember when the last one was; 2014 perhaps?

the USPS didn't request pics, didn't request the buyer to come in.

the USPS paid my claim within a week of filing (online).

i am just no understanding the OP's situation and why it is being an issue?

I treat most of buyer problems as playing poker and I am calling their bluff.  A lot of them fold.

I don't understand sellers that insist on telling the buyer about insurance.  The buyers know about Money Back Guarantee, so talking about insurance is just making the seller look like they care more about covering their but than the customers problem.  If it's an honest buyer with a problem, it's just going to irritate them, if it's a scammer, they know they have you over a barrel.

I don't bother with asking for pics or talking about an insurance claim, it just delays the inevitable.  If the buyer files a case, they don't have to cooperate with your claim in order to get their money back, so I just tell them that I'm going to call their PO and backtrack the damage problem and that they can file a case to return it.  Most back down.

Of course I don't list anything worth over $50 on ebay.

the way things work today and what i read on these boards;

i would rather have a buyer open a case.

i would want every action to be on record.

not sure if it makes a difference?

i would think a "serial" returner or a scammer wouldn't want to be on record too often.

then again 99.99% of my selling goes without a hitch.

one thing for sure i rarely list breakables.

and they are usually smalls.

these days i couldn't see myself wrap up plates even just one.

Not crazy at all. I actually buy every piece of jewelry that I want to keep. Usually wear it a while and then sell it. Seems to work....lol. I do have a fascination with oriental antiquies, but I don't quite have the knowledge yet. Still learning so I don't get taken. I'll send you a pic of one of my favorite pieces. Never seen a single other one like it in years of searching.

Re: Help! Torn on how to handle this.

I think SHE broke the plate---or, it's fine, but she wants the money back, keeping the plate. Some people here will try ANYTHING!
Happily most folks really want the items they buy just as it is. Otherwise, who'd want to sell at all?
I hope you can get the plate back to resell. Save all messages and if she breaks a policy, you can get help. I just did and it came out fine--in about 5 minutes! It used to be tough dealing with the reps, but today it was a breeze. Who knew? I'm thrilled!
