Getting a buyers email address to ask for additional payment.

A buyer gave me the wrong shipping address and package was returned.

He has since corrected his address and is asking me to re-ship his item.

I just tried to send him a message asking him for his email address so that  i can send him a paypal money request to pay for the second round of shipping, but ebay blocked my message.

I thought once you conducted business with someone that ebay no longer blocked those types of messages.

Other than contacting ebay, can you think of any way to remedy this?

We simply need a buyer's email address that they want us to send the invoice to.

So if it does not have to be their email associated with their PayPal account then a invoice could be sent to their randomly generated email created by eBay?

No, that won't work @stephenmorgan. I started a discussion about buyer encrypted e-mails when the change rolled out in 2020 and Brian (from the eBay team back then) confirmed that the encrypted e-mail addresses could not be used for PayPal invoices. (link)

Going back and re-reading that thread, a lot of posters joined in and asked great questions surrounding encrypted e-mails and sharing contact info post-sale.

Gotcha.  Yes, that is true, it can be any email they want it to be.  Not sure why they'd want it to be anything other than their PP email & with my buyers, I'm going to keep phrasing it the way I do, b/c as a rule, my buyer demographic skews not very technically astute, but you're right, they could use a different email if they wanted.

Then as a buyer, you and I would have had issues because I use a different email address from my PP account.  So if we were in a transaction and I refused to give you my PP email address, what would you do then.  You really have no need for it, so why do you insist on having it.  Some people keep that as protected information.

There were inaccuracies in your original post as has been gone over in detail by a few members.  Whether you are willing to take that information get a different perspective from it is another thing all together.

In your most recent post you added the policy on "buyer or sell outside of Ebay policy".  That is rather confusing and insulting to me as I don't think ANYONE on this thread has suggested or even talked about doing any such thing.

Billing a buyer for an additional cost through PayPal is NOT selling anything outside of Ebay and it has been a practice of sellers for YEARS since Ebay still does not offer us any way to do this without extra work [beyond sending an invoice], more fees and potentially causing us to hurt our own stats.

So if Ebay is going to take this left turn and now tell us it will be considered a breach of this policy if we invoice through PayPal for reshipping charges, then this needs to be announced and policies added or re-written.

There is really no need to "pass on" the problem presented in this thread as it has been done countless times over the years, some by me, and to date Ebay has not seen fit to give us a reasonable process to accomplish this on the site.  Instead the threat dinging us for selling outside of Ebay is brought up as if it were going to be something used against sellers for this process if we use PayPal.

Re: Getting a buyers email address to ask for additional payment.

@mam98031

Glad you said something - I was going back re-reading wondering "where" the off-site transaction tangent occurred and if it was tied to the OP or another poster, etc??

This thread is now long and I while "I" understand what "should" happen, I sincerely doubt someone who has not been here since the beginning can wade thru all 9 pages of this and discern ALL the corrections, etc.

I agree with you that I think clarity needs to be lent to the "solution" on this thread, OR the solution needs to be removed and let the OP or yourself "summarize" and use that as the solution.

Not my thread and not mine to direct.  Just think this is too important to not get right/correct (100%).  Everyones' mmv.

I did reach out to the OP a few days ago, he isn't really concerned about it.  I'm genuinely pleasantly surprised by your post but certainly happy to read it.  Earlier in the thread it was more of a joke to some about having a proper solution on the thread, so your current comments are refreshing.

Re: Getting a buyers email address to ask for additional payment.

I honestly have ZERO idea what you are referring to.  I have posted on this thread since the onset.

In Post 66- I asked Velvet for clarity, which does not appear happened relative to the solution as it stands.

In Post 67 - I tagged Sheila, Brian and Velvet about lending "transparency" to a mod selecting the solution.

brian_burke@ebay chose to PM me privately vs posting on this thread to address my post #67.

I never made a "joke" about anything relative to this thread and my posts are all still here for everyone to read.

You clearly have me confused with another poster and to be honest, your post to me just now makes zero sense.

@inhawaii  - hope it all worked out.  This will be my last post to this thread.  If no clarity is ever lent to solution and OP does not care as has been stated above, that is between the OP and the mod who selected the solution.

Oh at my age I could easily be confused!  I went back an looked and I mixed you up with someone else.  I'm so sorry.  I hope you can forgive me.  It was MY mistake.

Hi, I ask buyers to write "at" instead of @. That works for me.

It isn't necessary if you have a transaction with the buyer in the past 60 days.

It was not my intention to insult anyone @mam98031. I wanted to let everyone know the concerns we have about sharing contact info, and also let everyone know that the policy has not changed as there was a lot of speculation around that being the case.

The reason that some thought the policy may have changed is because of what you said in the post that you marked as the solution, NOT speculation.  It didn't come from anywhere else but your post.  What you stated was incorrect and is not how it functions as my test a few posts after that proved out.  So it started with what you said.

And still the policy of trying to trade off Ebay DOES NOT apply to what we have been talking about here.  No one was trying to do that and it simply has NOTHING to do with the subject at hand.  So why bring it up in the first place as it felt a bit threatening really.  It simply has nothing to do with the discussion or what anyone is trying to accomplish.

I don't want to make you feel like I'm attacking you, that is simply NOT my intent.  It is simply that the information you collected from others and then posted as a solution for this thread was incorrect for the most part.  I know you are standing by what others told you, but it practice it is not correct.  It is a way of doing things but not the only way and not necessarily the best way for a seller to handle this.

I have a situation where a item is stuck in Customs and I am past the 15 days after the sale.  Custom want's additional information.  It would be nice if I could communicate directly with the buyer and figure out the documents.

So are you saying I can still exchange email's for up to 60 days thru eBay Messaging without issue?
