Did you mean:

For the edification of those whose rants claim that eBay does not protect sellers.

We’ve all seen the rants. OH so many of them.

Today I got a charge back via the buyer’s credit card claiming that they did not recognize the transaction. It was shipped to the address on eBay’s screen and tracking confirms it has been delivered. So I opened the dispute and it said:

Your buyer filed a payment dispute for an order placed on Jul 08, 2023. This means that they disputed a charge directly with their payment institution. They are requesting $45.00 back and the reason for this dispute is that the buyer did not recognize the transaction.

The good news is that you’re protected for this dispute under eBay seller protection policy. We'll close this dispute once we receive the dispute outcome from the buyer’s payment institution. You're not required to take any action right now. If the buyer updates the dispute, we will let you know if any further action is required.

I don’t know if this will change anyone’s mind but for those who continue to rant that eBay does not protect sellers that statement is patently untrue.

And this isn’t the first time.

Paranoia.

As I mentioned in my OP this is not the first time this has happened. They have never come back and taken anything.

eBay has already made their decision, but likely the way they have it coded the case does not "close" until the CCC (or whatever institution is in control of the situation) makes their decision. (likely for the buyer)

Re: For the edification of those whose rants claim that eBay does not protect sellers.

the reason for this dispute is that the buyer did not recognize the transaction.

This is a non-service related chargeback, like a stolen credit card or unauthorized charge.

Ebay Seller Protection. like most online marketplaces protects you if you shipped the product to the address on the order.

It differs in its handling from most other disputes. so you are correct, and so are the other sellers who are speaking of their experience with service-related chargebacks.

The distinction is not well known, though it should be.

The bank makes the final say. Don't know what has happened yet. Might take 2 weeks. Usually the bank wins and also the seller gets charged an additional $20 for doing an appeal. Curious about the outcome.

I had one. Money was never on hold. I didn't know anything about it until I saw the reversal charge on my bank statement. I did not dispute it. It was for like $3.00. Lucky me. I did question about it at the bank though.

The bank makes a decision BUT.......ebay will NOT charge the seller...........that's the whole point of the protection.......

To further clarify my post.

This decision if it is decided differently by the bank, will be funded by Ebay.

Many of the PayPal Seller Protection claims were funded by PayPal because the card issuing banks and the consumer protection laws do not provide the same level of protection that PayPal offered sellers.

Historically, sellers who migrated from Ebay to Amazon were shocked when there were buyer disputes that they would have won with PayPal. And Ebay Seller Protection funds fewer disputes than PayPal.

@richard1rst

Not really paranoia but reality, I have a chargeback opened on June 13 for item not received, tracking shows delivered so I was protected, and eBay replied to the institution I guess, then a week later the funds were held because buyer says they returned the item with no tracking.

Re: For the edification of those whose rants claim that eBay does not protect sellers.

So you have a buyer that states they don't remember buying an item.
And you have proof that you shipped it and it was delivered.
And you're so happy eBay"took your side" you made a post about it?
You do know that's standard procedure by eBay?
That just about all cases where you can show proof of delivery are found in favor of the seller?

But somehow this is news to you?
Be "happy" they didn't drop an INAD on you.
You'd be singing a different tune.

Yeah we are covered from select chargeback situations like that one which alleged credit card theft (which eBay is likely insured for), it's the ones where you have to the respond to the bank yourself that usually get you.  Those would be inad and some others, not protected and at the banks mercy with that one page response.  We do have some protections of course but ultimately, anybody can have anything they want for free at anytime on here.

Yeah, it’s always said that however, the case isn’t closed yet! I would hardly call “no response needed” having your back. The issue is aggressive card issuers not accepting the “proof” eBay provides. eBay claimed to have updated the process so more information could be included in the response to the card company. In addition to that I would like to see eBay really standing by its sellers by matching the aggressiveness of the card issuers in defending the charges if there is solid proof the charge was legitimate, like the item being shipped to card owner’s address.
