As a seller I used to leave positive feedback for a transaction where someone bought something from me. Just after I post positive feedback the buyer then leaves horrible negative feedback for me. The buyer waits until I post positive feedback. The buyer posts no feedback until I post positive feedback for them. Then they post negative feedback. I may then not change my positive buyer feedback. eBay could care less! Buyers should not be able to leave negative feedback once the seller posts positive feedback for a sold item. At the least sellers should be able to remove negative feedback from buyers if they, the seller, has already posted positive feedback for the transaction. Seller's should opt out of leaving any feedback at all. Opt out of the feedback system. I wrote a letter to the head of eBay. Nothing was done at all. They could care less. eBay has the ability to fix their feedback system but refuses to do so!

it makes absolutely no difference either way, feedback for buyers is completely irrelevant

The negative you received is not very important, since you have a good record. What you did after receiving the FB could be important, if you can write a response which shows you dealt with the problem which could happen to many sellers who have some bad luck. If you did something to remedy the problem, post what you did, using neutral and professional words.
Obviously, you do did not think USPS could break a body cap. Now you know and will pack in a way that protects it.

I always leave the type of feedback that only relates to ENJOY YOUR ITEM, or THANK YOU FOR SHOPPING WITH ME, or GOOD SO FAR BEFORE DELIVERY. That way it doesn't sting as bad if I ever got a negative...
As a buyer and a seller, I had more problems with sellers than I ever had buyers.

Since 2008, it's been against ebay policy for sellers to post anything but positive feedback for buyers, so as has been noted, feedback left for buyers is a moot point. Just because a seller posts positive feedback, doesn't mean the buyer has had a positive experience. Ebay is definitely slanted toward the buyer, no question.
But it is what it is.

Do you hear yourself?
If you leave the buyer a positive feedback and they leave you a negative feedback, you think ebay should remove it?

Every seller would leave every buyer positive feedback before sending any item. Then, no matter what they sent, even if it was the wrong thing or broken, buyers could not leave a negative. Does that really make sense to you?

Why don't you do like some sellers....
Don't leave a buyer positive feedback until they leave you positive feedback first.
That way, if they leave you a negative, you can leave 'em one right back!

Seller leaving positive feedback doesn't make the buyers problem go away.
If buyer couldn't leave negative feedback after a seller leaves feedback, sellers would leave feedback as fast as they could.

I think if you step back and read this again, you will see how it makes no sense. I leave positive for all my buyers as soon as they pay. Are you saying none of my buyers should then be allowed to post a negative?
I don't see a nasty negative on your account. I just see a negative, which is a common complaint, and most buyers wouldn't think anything about seeing one postal damage issue. I would do as mentioned, reply with how you handled the problem and not stress over it at all.

If it bothers you that much, why not just leave your buyer FB only after they've left it for you. That's what I do. Not b/c I'm worried about negs, but b/c it saves me time, since about 70% of buyers never leave FB at all.

Yep - once eBay BLOCKED us sellers from leaving Negative feedback years ago - feedback has become a meme and a TOTAL JOKE! Anyway, my Block list is a Mile long!

We are all running a little business here. Publicly shaming buyers in not the way to gain more buyers or have a thriving business. It simply is bad business.
Stop taking things so personally. These are not personal attacks. There are NO personal transactions on Ebay, they are ALL business transactions. If you can get yourself to remember this, it is less likely you will have such a hurtful reaction to negative or neutral feedback.
For those that don't know. Ebay changed the policy in 2008.

Hesitate to ask this since you are quite experienced, but you do know that FB is optional, not mandatory or required, right?
In other words, if the FB system bothers you, feel free to dispense with it.

Unless you're referring to a seller replying to a negative FB from a buyer, you actually cannot "leave 'em on right back.
