I understand that eBay wants to make it easy on buyers, but this is getting old. Once again, I have a return that is something I did not need returned before refunding, yet here I am having to pay for return shipping because eBay decided to "help me"
Give us a day or two to take care of these things or a way to ensure that we are not charged for return shipping on something we do not need back before issuing a refund.
I had an item damaged during shipment, I didn't want it back since I was just going to file an insurance claim, yet here we are with me getting ignored by the buyer and notified that my item has been shipped. Thanks a ton for once again costing me money that I didn't have to pay, for something that could have been handled instantly without bothering my buyer about a return.
At least do something USEFUL with one of these lousy seller updates and add a return option that we can have the chance to select that makes it so that a return shipping label is not sent when we do not require the return before refunding.

Nice trick. Thank you. Sometime the item is so inexpensive that the cost of the return postage exceeds MY cost of the item. In that case I will still issue the refund without argument if it is justified, but I don't want to spend the money to return it.
Or maybe it arrived damaged and there is no point in sending it back I just tell them to dispose of it.
This provides the necessary breathing room to contact the buyer, tell them to keep it, and eliminate that return postage expense.
Worth looking at.

I've set that option today, after the fact. I'd just be happy with a box i could check that tells them to not send a shipping label, and to refund without return instead since my buyers don't seem to know how to read their messages asking them to not mail the item.
It's not a HUGE shipping cost im out today, but it's enough to annoy me since there was no need for it. You would think eBay would be able to anticipate that in some cases, it would be useful to have that sort of option.

I have a certain dollar amount where I don't want a return - an immediate refund makes more sense.

You can set to just do an auto refund for items less than the dollar amount you specify if it makes things easier. You can also set the reasons to accept the refund, or to decline and require a return. I assume it works, but can't say so since it's not been used.

I just changed my preferences to require the RMA number on returns, and while there, I saw the following automatically authorized. What is it? I turned it off but not sure if I should have.

If you have a buyer who purchases a guaranteed delivery item, and they want a return instead of the $5 voucher, Ebay covers the return shipping. This is if you met your handling time for that listing.
I'm assuming it works as intended...

So, if I switch to requiring an RMA for returns, is there still the option to have ebay supply the return label instead of me supplying the return label?

The return will still be automatically authorized but no label is generated until you input the RMA number. At that point you can decide on eBay label, seller label or refund without return.

An RMA number is just a number you put in that "authorizes" and "serializes" the return. Large companies use them to track incoming returns to make it easier to track. The rest of us use them to short-circuit the automatic label availability.

Edited post to clarify how returns work when shipping insurance is purchased on an eBay label.
Hi @albany_sellers, the advice given in this thread about RMA's is correct.
However, RMA's are not the only way to give sellers 3 business days before the buyer can print an eBay label. If the seller purchases an eBay label and also purchases shipping insurance, this will result in the same 3 business day wait period before printing an eBay label after a return is auto accepted. When we detect shipping insurance was purchased on the original eBay shipping label, we will give the seller 3 business days to work with their buyer after a return for not as described is opened.
The return will still be automatically accepted but the buyer will not be able to print an eBay label until the 3 business days have past. This gives the seller time to provide their own return label to the buyer (if they want to add insurance for return shipping) or if they want to issue their buyer a refund and pursue an insurance claim with the shipping carrier instead of having the buyer return the item.

Hi @ersatz_sobriquet, the information from @dtexley3 is correct, though I want to add further clarity to it. After a return is auto accepted the seller has 3 business days to provide an RMA number. If the seller doesn't take action within 3 business days then the buyer will have the option of printing an eBay label that lacks an RMA number (since the seller didn't provide it).

Thanks for the reply, one suggestion I have is that you guys add a tool tip or something explaining what an RMA is and why it's useful. I've been selling for a good while, but had no idea what that was, or how it would help me.
