Ebay's charging me refund for item that got lost

I sold and shipped a ps5 on november 3rd to a customer in the marshall islands,it was expected to arrive on the 22nd

On December 1st the customer leaves a review saying "good deal",but a few days later he opens a case for item not received

It turns out that the the last location the item was tracked was in sacramento on november 11th

I opened a missing mail case with usps since december 10 and they're telling me i have to wait for them to figure out what happened to my package.

Ebay ruled in the customer's favor and will be deducting the refunded money from my account in 2-3 days

I can't afford this,do i have any options?

Usps and ebay customer service have not been helpful

After the case was first opened i responded and explained to him

The response has to be in the complaint, and must include the tracking number. And yes, eBay does already have the tracking number, this is just braces and belt.

Contacting the buyer is not considered "response" in the complaint.

So I assume that potential buyers from places such as Nantucket or Long Island are out of luck if they want to buy from you.

@oldskoolmadskilz

The Marshall Islands are part of the US empire, along with Puerto Rico and Guam. The inhabitants are US citizens.

They are served by USPS.

.    The Marshall Islands are not part of the US they are an independent country nor are their inhabitants US citizens. The Marshal Islands along withFederated States of Micronesia and  Republic of Palau are freely associated states. They differ in their status from Puerto Rio and Guam which are considered to be US territories.

However for shipping purposes the USPS still considers the Marshall Islands to be domestic.

The phone reps do not work for eBay, but are subcontracted out of Utah.

You want the social media accounts covered by trained employees.

Re: Ebay's charging me refund for item that got lost

I’m shocked they awarded the buyer so quickly.  Clearly it’s lost and can still be found. Gosh I hope you insured it!! Funny thing is I just went through a chargeback case opened against me. Took me 3 months to arrive at a decision but yet they award your buyer less than a month! KEEP FIGHTING! Becuz if it shows delivered you can get your money back! ITA NEVER TOO LATE!

ALSO, if u insured it you can open a claim with whoever u shipped with and get money back from them!! At no cost!! If no insurance just hope and pray it gets delivered some day! When that day comes CALL EBAY immediately for ur money! Sad the buyer couldn’t just handle it with you instead instantly went to eBay for a claim!! Such a shame people are complete d I c k s and clearly insensitive. Hope it turns out for you!

He’ll also be losing a lot of sales not shipping to anywhere in Manhattan neither. But to each his own.

That is wrong.

You CAN filter out everyone so that you only sell to the 48 US contiguous states. I know...I'm doing it...Now if they use a freight forwarder, that is out of my control and I know I've had a couple of those sales without any issues.

Yes, this is where I was unsure because I haven't messed with my shipping filters in years. Can you show me exactly where you have this setting as I still don't see it in my shipping choices? A screenshot would help. Thanks. I wonder if it matters that I'm using business policies.

Also on another note, I like shipping to freight forwarders. Never gotten a completed return from them ever. It's almost like all sales final.

I'm sure there are other ways of getting there but this is what I did:

Click on My eBay

In one of those boxes should be a shortcut called Shortcuts

Click on Site Preferences

Click on Shipping Preferences

Then make sure you click on the blue "Show All Countries" checkmark (especially under North America) or you'll end up sending to a whole bunch of place you might not want to.

This link might get you there too:

https://www.ebay.com/ship/prf/excludeRegions

firesteel_surplus_0-1672322933903.png

You see that "Also Apply to Current Listings" check mark block? That is just a feel good block that eBay put in there to make you feel good that they would ACTUALLY do that for you. They didn't for me. So if you check mark off that block, you best go in and check your current listings and see if eBay updated your listings. Mine were a haphazard mess of updates.

Hope that helps!

Here's a link to your site preferences for shipping; click on "Exclude shipping locations":

I'm always replying and reading things late. If I'd seen you'd already gave a great answer to the question, I wouldn't have answered again.

I just added the step by step. So there is that.

Thanks @nobody*s_perfect !

The Marshall Islands have not been US territory since independence in 1986 and the residents are not US citizens. We do have a "Compact of Free Association" which allows for unrestricted travel and other benefits, such as USPS service.

Would Marshall Islands fall under as a US Protectorate then?

Re: Ebay's charging me refund for item that got lost

Update on my package sent to Marshall Islands on Dec 9. It's Jan 19 and as mentioned in my last reply the last known location scan was on Dec 15 in Hawaii and on Dec 19 they added a "arriving late" tracking update. Nothing since then.

I can only assume that the item arrived to the buyer and they haven't decided to take advantage and abuse the system. So from this thread I've learned to never sell anything valuable to someone shipping to the Marshall Islands. There might be mixed views about this, but I'd say this would fall under "problem with address" cancellations, albeit an unorthodox problem with address.

Re: Ebay's charging me refund for item that got lost

Unfortunately, this is a known issue that USPS is unwilling to fix. Their excuse is that the scanning system at Marshall Island is broken, and they need a USPS engineer to come and fix it. This situation has been happening since November-December 2024, while there is no solution I don't recommend shipping there until the situation gets resolved because sadly customers will take advantage of this.

Actually, the citizens of the Republic of the Marshall Islands are not US citizens.  They gained independence in 1986, but under the terms of a "Compact".

They do seem to have a post-colonial relationship with the post office.
