A few times a year i order myself some homemade goodies (usually cookies) offered by ebay sellers. Some of my friends and family think it's gross and they will not eat any. I get the usual responses:

1) What if they try to poison you?

I'm not that important of a person to poison.

2) What if they spit in it?

What if the girl at my local bakery spits in it?

3) How do you know how clean they are?

How do i know how clean my local bakery is?

Any thoughts on this matter?

Commercial bakeries have rules. That's why you buy commercial not homemade.

I wouldn't worry so much about being poisoned. At least your friends and family would let the police know to check your Ebay cookies if something happens to you...

I'm glad those signs on the door make you feel better but it doesn't do much for actually being sure employees wash their hands. I've seen worse done at restaurants that are regulated I've come into work and been told don't eat this today because we had to use the whatever that went bad. The ice cream machine was rarely every cleaned out until customers said it didn't taste right...of course it didn't it was full of sour milk and mold

I worked in the restaurant business for 16 years. I can guarantee you that the average home kitchen is cleaner than the average restaurant kitchen.

Yeah that's about how long I've done it. And I agree. Most people don't live in the dirty conditions I've seen restaurants in.

My sister almost died from E Coli she got at a restaurant. No one that I know in my family have ever had such a thing happen from eating home made food.

I purchase home made cookies and other items pretty much anytime I find them. Not once have I even gotten an upset stomach.

Yeah church pot luck is my favorite buffet ha. Only reason I've ever felt sick from it was because I ate too much. ;).

Do the foods you buy on eBay have adequate labeling as to contents etc? I think that would be required since so many people have food allergies. Also, even if eBay allows it I'm sure there are state regulations they must follow if they are cooking/baking to sell to the general public?

I once walked into a restaurant with an open plan kitchen and there was 2 cockroaches doing a waltz on the top of a joint of beef, and I'm not kidding, I couldn't believe my eyes.. I walked out of the restaurant and reported what I saw to the relevant food standards agency, and after inspection the restaurant was closed down, it was infested with cockroaches..

I too worked in restaurants... just a couple years in High School. The restaurants I worked in were clean. I cleaned them. I wouldn't serve people spoiled food or moldy food. If something wasn't labeled or looked bad, we pitched it.

I don't doubt that the restaurants you worked at were filthy. That's kind of my point. There's a lot of people that have no regard for others and will put others in jeopardy for no good reason.... just to make a buck. It's negligence really.

It's surprising that Ebay let's them sell here really. It's a lawsuit waiting to happen. Food vendors are required to have licenses in most states. Do you really think Ma & Pa Ebay Cookie Vendor went to the trouble of getting a license? Do you think they are getting inspected regularly by the Health Department?

I have personally seen a woman server at a restaurant use the rest room and not wash her hands despite the little sign...Too late for us because we had already finished eating. In large cities inspectors come out only when there is a problem...so if your steak accidentally fell on the floor, do you think a restaurant is going to throw it out?

I know of some people who sold spices and condiments. The only sink they had in their building was next to the toilet. They washed the utensils in that sink and put them on top of the toilet tank to air dry. Need I say more? Oh, and let me add, the jars were packaged very beautifully and professionally.

When I first got married, I discovered my significant other didn't wash the vegetables before cutting them up. The reasoning, "They're washed in the store." Uh-huh.
