Counterfeit Stamps

What is eBay doing about sellers selling counterfeit stamps? Sellers who are posting stamps for sale way under the cost of postage + shipping and selling fees are not selling stamps at a loss. These stamps have got to be counterfeit stamps purchased at ridiculously low prices, usually about $5.50 to $6.00 per book or sheet of 20 $0.63 stamps. These purveyors of counterfeit stamps are selling them at below face value to include their shipping and selling costs. Nobody sells current, Forever stamps at a loss. This flood of counterfeit stamps are putting us legitimate sellers out of business. My suggestion is that eBay should determine the legitimacy of these suspect stamps and if found to be counterfeit, suspend the sellers. If it is determined that these same sellers continue to sell counterfeit stamps, they be banned from selling on eBay permanently. Something has to be done about this.

Re: Counterfeit Stamps

They are doing exactly what the entire internet world is doing (I get these ads on my email, on header of yahoo etc.). They are playing 'wackamole'.

Really, I would think that anyone would know you cannot buy a .60c stamp for .20c.

Boy, that sums it up:  Smash down one and another immediately pops up.

Exactly.  Nobody sells Forever stamps way below face value with free shipping.  Anyone old enough to have an eBay account should know that the stamps are, therefore, fakes from China -- about which USPS constantly warns consumers.

For each such seller that eBay (and Amazon, et al) detects and bans, another pops up.

There is only so much that others can do to protect the willfully ignorant, or the greedy who are eager to believe in deals that are too good to be true, from themselves.

There are a lot of counterfeit books of Forever stamps around, eBay has announced they will only authorize some sellers to sell that kind of postage.

But.

Stamp dealers, online and more often in B&Ms, get their stock fromcollectors and from estates.

And most collectors have an accumulation of mint, never hinged, valid postage stamps. Much more than they will ever use for postage, and too modern to be of interest to collectors.

We buy those stamp accumulations from the widow.

Last week we purchase $15,000 face value in Canadian postage, for sale to our private list of eBay and other online sellers.

We paid on average less than 30% of face. We'll sell, depending on several factors, at 70-90% of face.

The US market pays even less for wholesale lots, but also sells for less.

The widow got rid of stuff and got money instead.

We sell at less than face, including shipping. We still make a nice profit.

These are not counterfeit. Most were purchased from the USPS and Canada Post philatelic fulfillment centers.

Just because you don't understand the philatelic market, don't think that most postage sold here is counterfeit or in any way illegal.

Re: Counterfeit Stamps

Yes, I wish more people understood that we're not talking about discounted postage here.

There is lots of discount postage for sale on eBay (and elsewhere) and many people buy and use it.

I have a friend who has bought nothing else for years, who is still a great letter-writer of the old school.  I just got a letter from him two days ago, and it is in front of me.  There are nine stamps on it to make up the current 60-cent cost of a single first-class stamp -- one 20-cent, one 10-cent, four 6-cent, and three 2-cent stamps.

He probably paid 45 or 50 cents for the stamps, maybe less.  It's just a little "thing" with him, and it makes his letters and cards really fun to get, too.  When he sends heavier missives, or parcels, they are very nearly covered in stamps!

I had a friend several years ago who loved to go to estate sales and she always kept an eye open for postage to buy at less than face value.

Re: Counterfeit Stamps

Back in the day you could go auctions and we would buy stamps cents on the dollar. We still have hundreds of them that we bought over a decade ago. We also bought tons of forever stamps because we have a rate of return greater than what we get paid for savings as we can now count on the USPS to continue to increase postage costs as they just did in 2023.  Economics have changed as once  stamps were huge when we were growing up but now they are mostly gone. Happened to hobby shops that sold models, trains etc. We attended a closing hobby shop that sold trains the last time about 25 years ago. It was like watching dinosaurs disappearing into history.  In Sacramento we watched a model hobby store shut its doors about 10 years ago.  One thing I know is the collectors are into an entire different dialoge. Its all about electronics today and the current market reflect the change in the culture, times and what today's crowds look at as tomorrow's icons.    I read another seller complain the other day about a Johnny Walker Blue Label empty bottle. It was $50 I guess and among that crowd that bottle was a bargain.   We have tossed comics into the garbage . Sometimes things are just dead and not worth the time to mess with. Those comics were brand new. Plenty of Image Comics not worth anything.

Re: Counterfeit Stamps

many of these "reduced price" stamps are thefts from the post office...

Re: Counterfeit Stamps

Someone purchasing various denomination older uncancelled stamps at a reduced price will be unlikely the same person who purchases big rolls of Forever stamps at a stupid low price.  The first person knows what they're doing and is using legit stamps.  The second person has just been duped.

It's probably wise to distinguish between the two.

Re: Counterfeit Stamps

Maybe things have changed but it has been the Forever Stamps in rolls that have be counterfeited, maybe recently they have started to fake the booklets as well but I'm a bit skeptical.

It's not at all unusual to be able to buy (legit) older stamps issued in booklets at 50% of face value. Dealers end up with tons of these and if they don't discount them they can't sell them.

Re: Counterfeit Stamps

I don't buy USA stamps from China but I do buy stamps under face value on eBay. I haven't had any fake stamps from the USA sold to me yet.

I have a business plan which is repeat buyers. To get those buyers looking at my stuff I have to sell some stuff at .99 with free shipping. I can afford to give away a little to obtain buyers and repeat buyers. To get near the top of a certain country a seller usually offers something for .99. to be near a site where the buyer is looking at. I prefer this over promotions and all that other stuff.

Businesses have closed over the past few years and have all these forever stamps that were probably given to employees after they closed. When my business closed I got an office computer that was huge plus other stuff.

Re: Counterfeit Stamps

You can find genuine forever stamps quite often at going out of business or estate auctions. They usually end up selling for less than 50% off of face value.

Re: Counterfeit Stamps

50% is about right.     How much do stamp dealers or anybody else for that matter want to pay for

postage that they don't need or want?

Buy at 50%  of face and sell it at 70-80%  of face.

Discount postage has been around for years.

Re: Counterfeit Stamps

This isn't a new topic. In fact, it's not just ebay, it's Walmart, Amazon, everywhere. Ebay has made some effort of clearing out the counterfeit stamps (the listings are obvious by price alone) but can't keep up. You can report these listings but it's hit and miss if they go anywhere. Others just pop up. Here's a phone book about this stuff>
