Chargeback

So I had my biggest loss ever this week on ebay made possible by MP.

A buyer purchased an item from me in mid January. He never onced asked to return or stated a problem with the item. In Late April he opens a chargeback for INAD, totally fictitious.

I was assured by anchor store CSR's I would be fine appealing the case because I was protected by seller protection and the buyer was obviously scamming.

Yesterday I get an email I lost the case and they were taking $1500 from my bank account.

I have called 3 times and spoken to 7 CSR's, mostly in MP, each telling me I have no protection because I could have sent the buyer a different item. Also, he does not have to return my item and ebay is keeping their fees.

I asked 20 years with ebay paying hundreds of thousands in fees and you cant do a thing for me, when PP would have at least made them return the item.  I was told by one MP CSR that ebay can't match what PP provided because PP is a unique situation and actually admitted moving forward I will likely lose every chargeback someone makes. They refused to give any details on the decision or why they made it just that each case is unique.

Needless to say very demoralizing and I will have to really look to speed up my movement away from ebay. In 20 + years with PP I had 3, maybe 4 disputes which PP closed and in one case made the buyer return my item.  In 8 months in MP I have had 2, one because ebay never refunded the buyer on a cancellation the buyer requested and I refunded!

Now out  1500 and the money I had in the item. Sux

Re: Chargeback

Also, if this chargeback happened months after the purchase, sometimes there is no record of the delivery scan. These scans are archived somewhere with USPS and I think you have to pay them something to retrieve that data to submit the delivery scan info.

Re: Chargeback

They wont accept that with the photo of the label. It can be altered. They need the archived delivery scan.

Re: Chargeback

That’s a good speculation. How do MP charges from Ebay look on a credit card statement. Inquiring minds would like to know.

@dbfolks166mt

In case you did not know, almost all buyers when using paypal actually use a credit card.

Re: Chargeback

You usually should not appeal a chargeback case with a refusal to refund. The cc companies will fight you tooth and nail and usually side with the buyer becuase that is how they work. Their interest is mainly in protecting the buyer.  Unless, that buyer has file way too many chargebacks then they drop them like a hot potatoe becuase they are not going to make any cc interest money on people who habitual file false claims. OP should have approved the chargeback so that MP could have told the buyer to return the merch. If denied the CC company takes over and it’s a free for all.

Re: Chargeback

I'm not familiar with this option of a seller accepting or rejecting a chargeback. Where have you seen this option? The way it works is the Buyer disputes a charge with their credit card company, the ccc in turn challenges the charge with the vendor. There is no option to have an item returned, in fact one of the requirements for a SNAD Chargeback is that the buyer attempted to return the item to the seller.

Re: Chargeback

The screen shot from Ebay might help as this came from their data base and it not subject to alteration. Good suggestions Jonathan.

Re: Chargeback

It may have something to do with the laws and rules governing CC companies and how they conduct their business. They are a risk factor in selling anything online becuase they do not favor merchants and allow this stuff to happen.

Re: Chargeback

There is a huge disconnect here. Sellers have to realize that eBay is a huge entity and does not care one bit about any seller or group of sellers. Not one thing a seller my think, makes one bit of difference to eBay. All they think about is their own bottom line. If you get screwed out of $10 or one million dollars, it makes no difference to them. That's the seller's problem, not eBay's. They have no skin in that, intentionally.

Yes, fraud is up. There is really no denying that. Not every seller will experience it, but overall, it is up. Many factors why that is, not the least of which is the decline of morals of society. The question becomes, how do we change that? How can we influence change to make this problem go away or get better?

There are only two ways to do that, and both will require united efforts of sellers.

1 The vast majority of seller would need to leave the platform and go someplace else. (fat chance of that happening, honestly.)

2 Large swaths of sellers would need to get their representatives involved in legislation that would enact laws to FORCE eBay to change policies.

Again, this would all require an organized, concerted effort. And who would like to organize that? None of the sellers I ever see here, have the time nor the desire to do that. In all truth, there needs to be some kind of legislation to take some control back. The reality of it all is, about the only thing the sellers really control here are the items they list (for the most part), and the price they stick on the item. Beyond that, eBay is in full control. Your money is not yours, unless eBay decides it is. While most of the time, sales go off without a hitch, like the OP's example, doesn't always work out that way.

eBay has NO skin in the game, but reaps all the benefits. They leave gaping holes in the rules that allow buyers and sometimes sellers, to scam other people. They appear to put no effort into assisting with chargebacks. They leave no room for defending your side of the chargeback. And why would they? If you lose, they keep the fees AND charge you another $20 for their inconvenience.

If everyone REALLY wants to put a stop to the madness, you never will accomplish it complaining here. You need to get representatives or lawyers involved. This is the ONLY thing corporations understand. You either have to hit them with laws or in the wallet. Beyond that, they just don't care or pay attention.

Re: Chargeback

Seems they would be able to win the chargeback more effectively becuase they have the proof from Ebay of what was sent and none of this, maybe the seller sent something else.

Re: Chargeback

I am quite aware that buyers PayPal accounts are/were backed by credit cards. The difference was that PayPal was the arbitrator in chargeback and/or disputed cases and did a MUCH better job at investigating the case and bringing it to closure than eBay is doing under MP which is pretty much nothing other than siding with the buyer.

Re: Chargeback

It is extremely important that the documentation sent to the buyer helps them recognize what they purchased. I have accidentally thought I did not buy something when the charge documentation is not clear at times.

"Soon all you'll have on here is the junky items of no real value because that's all that sellers will be willing to risk. "  I think "soon" is now. ---Lots of junky, valueless items already... Quantity of goods may be up but quality has sunk to near bottom. Sad. 😞
