Buyer wanted to arrange pick up...? advice please...

Buyer messaged me today saying they were local in the town I ship from, and wanted to arrange a pick up.

I replied with "really? what a coincidence lol. would friday be good?"

Well from that point until now he replied with "yes, friday works well. I live off *redacted* near *redacted* thanks"

He then logged onto another account bought the item, and messaged me saying "thanks. I ordered. I need a time and a partial refund of 8.50 for the pick up thanks" from that account.

Now I'm confused. I didn't really even confirm anything with this person. How should I handle this situation? The user has also left me positive feedback. Should I just try to go through with the pick up? Maybe they were just squirrely and I'm looking too much into it??

Any advice is appreciated.

Make sure your not alone. He paid so i would follow thru with the sale. Again though make sure you are not alone when they pickup.. Have they been a member for a while. Just be safe. Come back and let us know how it went.

I would  tell the buyer you must ship as per your TOS. eBay expects you to have tracking for the item you sold to prove it was delivered in case the buyer decides to file a item not received case. You would get a defect for not uploading tracking within your handling time.
You could always ask the buyer if they are willing to cancel the transaction so you can relist as local pickup. The buyer would get a QR code to give you when you deliver the item to the buyer. This way you’ll have proof of delivery and your seller performance won’t be dinged.

Not going to offer advice on what you should do.

Will share what I have experienced when a couple of past buyers begged for local pickup. Both cancelled the pickup at the last minute and asked me to go ahead and ship.

For me, local pickup is nothing but a hassle. It is always a no at this point.

I Offer Local Pickup on Every Item I Sell...since if someone Wants Local Pickup..After the Sale.. it Cannot be Added ...If you Select a Shippng Method only....and do NOT Ship and show a Tracking Number..you get an eBay Defect..even if the Buyer Wants to do Local Pickup...Having Everything as Local Pickup.. in addition to a Shipping Method.. prevents any Defect after the sale..if a Buyer decides he Wants to do a Local Pickup.

Unless he purchased this as a pickup, don’t do it. You need to scan the code in that proves they picked it up. That code is sent to your buyer. If you don’t do it then they can claim non receipt and you lose the money and the item. If they pay cash you’re fine. Otherwise no.

You asked if Friday was good. The buyer said Friday was good. That sounds to me like you confirmed that he would pick it up on Friday.

Assuming he paid $.850 for the shipping charge, the buyer quite reasonably expects that to be refunded.

Re: Buyer wanted to arrange pick up...? advice please...

I have been asked numerous time by customers if they could do a local pick-up.   My answer has always been a big fat NO!  I don't do it,  I won't do it.   You can live a block away but you won't get it unless you pay the shipping charge and I ship it.  I just don't need the headaches of dealing with pick-ups.

There is a way around that. Just send a envelope with Ground Advantage to cover tracking and delivery.

I have done this in the past with a local order that was approaching 100 lbs. (Bought all my stock on a listing) I initiated the contact and delivery myself.

I dont prefer to make any deliveries but this particular sale fit the bill. Of course, the buyer paid thru eBay. PITA to ship but not a bad 90 minute roundtrip.

The almost $4 for tracking and delivery confirmation was minutus change in the big picture. Buyer was thrilled to get their order in 5 hours.

My advice?

Let them pick it up...or tell them no.

Litterally only 2 choices here

Re: Buyer wanted to arrange pick up...? advice please...

My two cents. Have the customer cancel the sale and change the listing to local pick up and then have the customer repurchase it. This way, they are provided with the code to scan, when they come and get the item. This way, it is all covered under the ebay policies, you don't get any dings for tracking or delivery not being uploaded, and you don't have to refund them anything.

I had a customer a few months back that insisted on picking something up. I had her do all that, with the cancel and repurchase, scheduled a time for her to come by... and it sat here for 3 weeks. Never came. Ended up refunding and blocked her. This person was even contacting me at 2 in the morning and expecting responses.

Ebay policies are there for a reason.

Another related question. I've arranged pickup for the bike I'm selling. Unfortunately, when the buyer is available, I'm out of town and so I've given the bike to my neighbor to finish the sale. Can my neighbor send me a photo of the buyer's QR code for me to deal with remotely?

You can always have them sign the invoice.  eBay lists that as an option for handling local pick up if you don't use the app
