Anything over an 80% refund and you risk the chance of an out of stock defect, perhaps removable but who wants to go through all that hassle.

I get it that in this scenario original shipping it out the window, that is unpleasant but so is needing to call eBay to remove a mega-defect. I feel strongly that it's not worth dwelling on an unpleasant experience just to maybe save a few bucks, better to move on and spend the time doing something to generate new sales to cover your losses.

That has been the subject of much discussion over the years.  But there is a way to avoid that without filing a cancellation.  BEFORE you refund, make sure that there is a clear message between you and the buyer outlining what you are doing, why and that the buyer accepts this refund is fine.  That will prevent any defect.

"...if there is communication present on eBay to explain the refund, an Out Of Stock defect will not be recorded. "  This is a partial quote from Trinton in post #45 in the thread linked below.

I had a similar thing happen to me the other week.

The customer requested to cancel AFTER the label was created but BEFORE it was shipped.

Are you sure canceling the order is an option after a label has been printed and the status is "shipped"?

That option wasn't available for me. I had to contact customer service.

Cancellation remains an option throughout the transaction.  it may not be the right function to use, but it remains available.

Re: Buyer sent this message: I do not want the package

I have one of these working right now.

• $36.50 + $$3.50 S&H item sold Thurs morning. A no returns listing (and eBay refund policies are why that listing is not a free shipping listing)
• Label created and pkg dropped in USPS blue box Fri morning.
• Buyer emails PayPal address from his iPhone (not via eBay messages) 2 hours after item is shipped: "Please Cancel"
• I respond through eBay messages: already shipped, costs $14.10 to try to retrieve, refuse when it arrives, and original cost minus original shipping paid will be refunded
• Buyer emails PayPal address again: "Please confirm cancellation"
• I respond through eBay messages again: "You were told the situation. You waited too long. It has shipped already. I am not cancelling. Do as I suggested, or do it the hard way, open a return, pay for the remorse return shipping."
• Radio silence.

Will be interesting to see how it plays out (think I had one return last year). May even take an unresolved defect if it comes to that* - not letting a buyers ineptitude/entitlement cost me any more than the PP 30¢ transaction fee. ("I will die on this hill to prove my point" 🙂

*Do not subscribe to the "it's the cost of doing business" pablum in general. Especially if feeling ornery, and this buyer just **bleep** me off. I normally ship same day in spite of stated 2 day handling, and would have probably shipped by noon on Thurs, but Thurs was July 4th, so it couldn't ship until Fri. Buyer waited almost 24 hours (hours after the PayPal shipment confirmation email must have arrived), hours after it physically shipped (once in blue box it is gone) to ask to cancel, and then continued to play clueless.

We shall see.
