I have a seller requesting me to write on an item before sending it which would really decrease the value should it be returned. As long as eBay can review the messages there is no risk on my part right? I'm just nervous about them claiming the item was damaged and wanting a refund.

You assume all the risk if you write on the item or not. Seller protection is a fairy tale.
Here in reality, the buyer has multiple ways of pulling the wool over on you.

My guess it is a very sick person or the buyer just wants those diapers as a gag gift for a friend. Either way, tell him to write his own stuff on them after he pays and owns them.

When you sell items that cater towards fetishes, expect your buyers to expect you to cater to their fetishes

If the person hasn't paid for the item, he/she/it may want you to make the item unsellable.

Just say no.
If he is sending it as a gift direct to the recipient, thus wants you to write on it rather than having it sent to him and he sends it on to the giftee, then the solution is for him to have it sent to himself first then he mails it on.
I would be worried just as much about a SNAD as the possibility of the package being undeliverable and returned to sender, with the item no longer sellable due to this buyer requested customization.

Buyer could always claim some sort of other reason for returning and you would be stuck with an altered item....... or he could try to blackmail you if you do it: Give me $10 and I won't return this.....
If the guy hasn't paid......certainly don't do it.....and I would refuse to write on anything as it alters it from what was actually sold.......

Maybe they are actually shipping the item directly to the friend ... which is why they want the OP to write on them??

Do not write on the item. Buyer might be fishing for a partial refund. Politely decline their request.

The big question I am surprised no one asked is what does he want it to say ?

In fairness to myself, I entered this realm in innocence 🙂 I actually had to do a bit of investigating to figure out why these were going so high. I honestly thought people were collecting them for display or something 🙂
Bet you won't do that again! Rofl

Oh my soul, are we talking about the Luvs? My kids wore those in toddler years. I should have been stacking those up, and using cloth diapers instead; I would be rich now! You just never know with Ebay 🙂

Maybe no one really wants to go there?
