Buyer backed out

I had a buyer who decided after the auction that he didn't want the item after all. I would like to leave negative feedback, but there doesn't seem to be any option to do that.

Have him cancel the order from his side.  Do not cancel the order yourself.

It is not possible for a buyer to cancel a transaction.  That can only be done by the seller.

eBay removed the ability of sellers to give negative feedback to their buyers back in 2008.  Management worried that buyers would feel inhibited from giving honest feedback to the sellers for fear of sellers retaliation.  See the rest of the story at https://pages.ebay.com/services/forum/changes.html  scroll down to #4.

What reason did you select when reporting the buyer? The buyer didn't violate any policy so the report will go nowhere- except maybe to work against you since eBay tracks false reporting of policy violations.

Just curious, what would you say, in your "Negative Feedback" because the buyer changed his mind immediately after winning the bid?  Isn't it better that the buyer cancel now, than open a case later, because he doesn't want the item?

@american-photography

Buyers can NOT actually cancel an order.  They can only request a cancellation.  ONLY sellers can actually cancel the order.  If the OP has an email from the buyer stating they want to cancel the order, that is enough and they can cancel for the reason buyer requested it without problem.

Wow, has it really been 12 years??

Just think how many walls of red there'll be if every buyer got a negative feedback for every purchase they wanted to cancel, back out, or remorse return.

And just think of how many fewer GOOD buyers we would have on the site that would not want to risk a seller having a bad day taking it out on them and their FB.  Or get unfair negative FB just for asking a question.  Or any number of other reasons.  Buyers are not going to come to a site that the public shaming of buyers is allowed.  It is a horrible business decision for anyone to do such a thing.  I get the feeling of wanting to do this, it just is a BAD BAD BAD business decision.  And if it had of continued on Ebay it is likely that many long time sellers would not still be here as we would have fewer buyers.

I know you know this.  I just am still amazed at how some sellers actually think this is a good idea.  It is a very short sited view.

The short sided view was on eBay's part.

It would have been a great seller metric to raise the fvf's for too many red doughnuts given.

It was probably instated because (IMHO) it would have made the Chinese sellers stand out for loooong delivery times.

Hi @joe_97_97

While it is a disappointment and extra work for sellers, eBay allows buyers to request a cancellation. So this buyer did not violate any policy, hence there was no reason to report him. So cancel the transaction with the reason "Buyer Requested" and this automatically credits back your Final Value fees. Once this is done, contact the next highest bidder and send them a Second Chance Offer to buy the item at their highest bid. Below is a link on how to do that.

I would completely disagree with that.  The move not to allow sellers to leave negative FB well over a decade ago [2008] was a very good move and makes excellent business sense.  These are BUSINESS transactions, NOT personal transaction.  Some sellers have difficulty with the difference.

Your solution to raise FVFs for those that have too many negatives is what they use to do at one point.  But with that said it ONLY applied to SELLERS.  It was ONLY Sellers that were punished in that way.

I know that many will look at the number of negatives a given seller has without regard as to how many transactions that seller has.  Which is an incorrect and unrealistic way to look at things.  It matters.  A seller with 100 negs out of 10,000 transactions is quite different from 100 negs and 100,000 transactions.

With that said, none of this has to do with leaving a neg on a buyer.  You are simply talking about punishing sellers.
