Buyer asks additional week to pay ?

A buyer ask to delay the payment for a week, after winning the bid.

Is this normal? I am a new seller, and it just sounds suspicious to me. He/she could have let me know before the bidding.

I am leaning towards cancelling the transaction ( I haven't shipped the item yet).
Shall I just cancel it or wait for another week? Will it affect my rating? Thanks.

Re: Buyer asks additional week to pay ?

You can't just cancel, you'd need to open a non-paying bidder claim (NPB). That process can't begin until a few days have passed (can't remember how many) and it will give the buyer a few days to pay before you can close it.

From there you can relist it again, wait for the sale and get a payment (hopefully).

It sounds like a week wait is faster. It may be annoying but there's really no risk other than time.

Re: Buyer asks additional week to pay ?

Hi, well it is up to you. I give my auction winners a week to remit. However, i see this transaction was for a Best Offer for the Adidas. To avoid this scenario, i use fixed price with Immediate Payment Required and forego offers. That way no one can remove my item from the marketplace without paying first.

If you are not comfortable with taking a chance on this buyer, i would open an Unpaid Item Dispute after the two-day window eBay gives all buyers to remit. Then they have four days to remit before the dispute closes. It will give them a strike on their account and block feedback from being left if they don’t pay.

If you cancel, you risk getting a defect on your account. And feedback can be left.

Re: Buyer asks additional week to pay ?

Don't cancel the sale. I you do the buyer can leave you negative feedback.

Go to the Resolution Center,

https://resolutioncenter.ebay.com/

open an Unpaid Item case and follow it through.

In the future, you might want to consider using the eBay Unpaid Item Assistant.

1> Go to Account settings>Account preferences>Site preferences>Unpaid Item Assistant.

2> Click on the "Edit" link at the right and click on the "Yes – I want Unpaid Item Assistant to open and close cases on my behalf." button.

3> Select "2 days" from the "Open a case if payment hasn't been received after" drop-down list.

4> Select "Real-time" for the next 2 drop-downs.

5> I have "No" selected for the next 2 drop-downs, but you can select whatever suits you.

6> Hit the blue "Save" button at the bottom.

All done.

Now when a bidder/buyer doesn't pay after 2 days, eBay will automatically open a case for you and send you and the buyer an email noting this. After the two days are up, eBay will send the buyer a notice that they have 4 days to pay up. If the buyer doesn't pay, the UPI case will automatically close. The buyer will receive an Unpaid Item strike on their account. Once the case is closed the buyer will not be able to leave you negative feedback. It will take 1-2 weeks, maybe more, for eBay to refund your FVF. Don't forget to add the buyer to your Blocked Buyer List.

Re: Buyer asks additional week to pay ?

Yes, he should have contacted you before bidding. But now he's a buyer.

IMHO you should give him a week to pay, then open the unpaid item claim.  As noted above, you do not have a valid reason to cancel the transaction. Your only flexibility is in how long you wait before you file the unpaid item claim; you can file anywhere from 48 hours to 32 days after the transaction.   Here is the Help page about what to do if a buyer doesn't pay:

@fashunu4eeuh

>I give my auction winners a week to remit

Years ago I used to do the same. Not any more. Too many "sports bidders" placing multiple bids on same item from different sellers. First one to ship gets the sale. The rest get excuses.

I worked for years in auto repair. Some garages would order the parts they needed from several different local distributors. The first one to arrive would go on the car and the rest were returned. Just like the "sports bidders".

^^ This. It won't hurt any of your seller ratings.

Do not cancel. That WILL affect your seller ratings.

Re: Buyer asks additional week to pay ?

Hi, Yes, @bimm_corp I can see where that could be an issue (sport bidding).

These days i don't do auctions very often, but my items are generally unique and hard to find, so the possibility of what you describe happening would be unlikely, at least in my case.

Re: Buyer asks additional week to pay ?

At least the winning bidder contacted you wanting to pay in a week. If this happened to me I'd check his feedback to ascertain if this buyer is fairly reliable. Granted, sellers haven't been able to leave negative feedback on deadbeat bidders for the last several years but examining their feedback will ascertain what he buys and for how long he's been buying on eBay. If he's been on eBay for awhile with a moderate amount of purchases I wouldn't sweat it. If he's new to eBay or only has a few purchases over the last several years then that would be cause for concern. The item he purchased would also factor into my analysis. Is this item scarce or is it offered by multiple sellers? Could he get the same item for less in the near future? If I were in your shoes I'd give this winning bidder a week to pay absent of the aforementioned concerns. If this winning bidder doesn't pay in a week I'm pretty sure you can offer the item to the next highest bidder (I've been selling on eBay for 20 years and don't do auctions much anymore so I'm not sure). Incidentally, negative feedback left by a buyer due to non-payment can be removed by eBay so this issue would not be a concern. Good luck and welcome to eBay as a new seller!

Re: Buyer asks additional week to pay ?

Thank you all for the feedback. Now the buyer paid, but immediately requested a return, citing he used a wrong card and will buy with another card. I haven't shipped the item yet. Which option should I choose for the return:

"Accept the Return", or "Give a full refund"?

I plan to re-list the item, but block the buyer. But would like to know how to properly proceed with the return request. I have never done it before. Thanks all again!

Re: Buyer asks additional week to pay ?

It doesn't hurt your eBay performance at all to wait. The countdown for mailing doesn't start until after the buyer pays. Just from my own experience, buyers have asked me to delay paying until they get their paycheck (once it was 2 weeks). I have opted to wait, and the buyers always came through and paid. Unless your item is a time critical item in ultra demand, why not just wait, take a chance to see if they pay. If they don't pay after the wait, then you can file the unpaid dispute later to get your ebay fees back and relist the item. (Don't just cancel the transaction, you will lose the 10% ebay fees and open yourself to negative feedback.)

Re: Buyer asks additional week to pay ?

No it won't effect your ratings  if the buyer hasn't paid  . Check their feedback as a buyer . That should help you to decide  if you want to grant the extension .

I would just give the refund.

Re: Buyer asks additional week to pay ?

Their mistake is going to cost you the paypal fee, which paypal doesn't refund.

If they just sent you a message and requested to cancel, you can just cancel based on buyer's request, you will get the eBay fee back, but not the Paypal fee.

If they filed a return case, then yes, accept the return case and give a full refund within the return case. Again in this case you will get the eBay fee back, but not Paypal.

I agree with blocking the buyer now that they have cost you money.
