I recently sold an item for 70.00 and got a payout for 59.23. This is a whopping 15% fee. Even 10% (fee from ~10 years ago) was pushing it but it's clear ebay just keeps getting greedier and greedier. I will absolutely not be selling on ebay anymore after this. Your little scam has gone so far as to alienate a long time member. Get your fees down asap or your site is screwed.

You used to pay 10% to eBay and 2.9% to PayPal.
You don’t pay PayPal (who also have raised their fees since) so it comes out pretty even.

Selling fees are clearly posted all you needed to do was look. If you did there wouldn’t have been any surprises.
ETA This is a member forum of buyers and sellers. eBay doesn’t read these posts.

uh...you forgot something....10% is true + 2.9% to Paypal which equals almost 13%
today it's 13.25% for most categories......
10 years ago gas was 2.65....almost double that today
think about that........
oh, and you sold it for 74.00 (you forgot they paid you for shipping too)

The final value fee is calculated basically on these three figures: The item price, the shipping cost and the state sales tax, if applicable.
Maybe you were surprised because this is the highest dollar item you've sold recently.
In addition, the fee schedule is shown to sellers in several places so that they can calculate possible FVF before selling. Of course, the seller does not know what the shipping will be nor the state sales tax until he actually makes the sale.
And, by the way, when you post here, you're not addressing eBay, its management or its employees. So we won't be able to respond to your request to lower fees.

You would have been beat down to $30 on marketplace. And you would have to deal directly with nonsense
04-20-2023 08:45 AM
...this is too true.........^^^^^^^^^^^^
04-20-2023 08:56 AM
@monica-sells , and you'd be happy to take $30 from the 1st person that actually showed up....because of the 10 people you waited on to show up that you never heard from again.
AND, that $30 was far better than all the bonehead $8.50 offers you got. AND you would rather have $30 than to trade for three old tires. 😂

And PP fees are now 3.49% + $0.49

A sale for $70 and a payout for $59.23? That's a pretty healthy return for worldwide coverage of your item from the comfort of your office sitting in front of your computer!
Mainly because of the skyrocketing increases in shipping costs, on some items I'm lucky to clear a payout of 50% - sometimes even less.
It's your privilege to get your socks in a knot, stomp a little bit on the way out, and blame eBay as your whipping boy. Then go ahead and see if anywhere else is any better when you consider the reality of the new bottom line and the lack of marketplace saturation compared to eBay. When you leave eBay, be sure to keep your options open for returning when you're confronted with the grass being the same color of green no matter where you go.
Be thankful for your high payout, and be sure to keep things IN PERSPECTIVE of the current state of the economy.
Accept > Adjust > Adapt --That's always been the way to successfully move forward here.
Cheers, Duffy

I do understand your "sticker shock". I sell lower priced items but every once in a while I sell something higher priced and it is disappointing to see the payout. But as others have mentioned, the fees have remained just about the same over the years.

Be happy the fees are not yet higher, cosmetic & other site improvements undertaken by ebay, are likely to have been very costly.
Hopefully the improvements are now at an end.

Do you really think paying 15% on an actual sale is bad? I'm the first one to criticize Ebay but this is fair. You made your sale. Would you have done better in a newspaper classified? How many weeks would that run? How many calls would you field? Would you do better on Craigs List? Ebay is not a yard sale. You have to build the fees into your selling price.
That all said, of course I'd like to pay lower fees.

Not hard to know what the fees are right before YOU PUSH the 'List It' button:

On low priced items two factors add to that sticker shock.
First is the non-refundable 30c service fee (now 49c on Paypal).
And another is the high cost of shipping.
I don't have a US example, but to ship with tracking here in Canada the cheapest service is $9.75 for Registration PLUS the lettermail rate of 92c to $5.47.
Add to that an amazing number of longtime members don't seem to have noticed that eBay (and Paypal) charge fees on shipping and have since 2008.
