Asking a customer for additional payment after the sale.

I'm packing up my Friday orders.  One of my customers asked that i upgrade them to Priority Mail from First Class Mail. She says she needs it right away and blah blah blah she is willing to pay whatever it costs.

It's just a few bucks so i went ahead and upgraded her before getting paid. I went to send her a paypal money request. I've done this many many times but always with the buyers email address. Now that i don't have the buyers email address available to me, how do i send a paypal money request?

You can archive this order from the order tab and then look for this transaction in archive. Buyer's email address is viewable for 45 days there.

instead of email address, you can also go to the PayPal "activity" page and use the PayPal-assigned nickname next to the name (It's in parenthesis--colored out in blue on the pic).  this way works if you send an invoice--plug in the nickname and it searches the user automatically.IMG_8939.jpg

I believe you can use the ebay assigned email to email from anywhere......at least that's how ebay explained it.......the ebay contact email redirects to their regular email.  You may also be able to ask the buyer for their email since you are post transaction with them......

Re: Asking a customer for additional payment after the sale.

My second job was delivering newspapers where we had to collect the subscription fee directly from the home owners.  I was nine at the time and was collecting from all types of people including professional baseball players on a certain team that won the world series three years in a row.  Sal Bando would always bust my chops and pretend he didn't want to pay.  Joe Rudi's wife always answered the door and would give me a tip.  (Not at the same house.  lol)

After ten years on ebay I just take the straight forward approach.

@dhbookds   FYI @shipscript tested this and you can't send the buyer a paypal invoice using the disguised email address

@inhawaii   You are allowed to ask a buyer for their email address after you have had a recent sale if the archive trick doesn't work.

Re: Asking a customer for additional payment after the sale.

Paper boy was a great experience, way back before car phones even, I think "call waiting" was available on landlines for those willing to pay extra but forget caller ID.  Those were the days, anyhow that paper route certainly opened my eyes as to how people really are. If you have a teenager I would encourage any parent to get the kid to do some kind of work for pay, mowing people's lawns is good too (use the homeowner's lawn mower for a discount rate, what I used to do).

You have no idea the kind of things that kid will experience, sure it will make them grow up a bit earlier but then again they won't come into this world full naive.

Loved that story about the paper route, I only had mine for about 3 months.

Thanks fellas.  Great info to have. I ended up doing it the old fashioned way .... by just asking the customer.  Works great when they are willing to pay. LOL

Have a great weekend everyone. Stay safe!

I just tell people who want that upgrade Priority is a First Class Package.  I don't want to pay the extra eBay fees.

Re: Asking a customer for additional payment after the sale.

It was in a small outer East Bay town along I-680.  There were other players who played for the Raiders in the area.  I met Ben Davidson from the Raiders (1964 - 1971) in an elementary school assembly event that was held at night.  This was probably around 1969 during his playing years in Oakland.  Big Ben was very tall so you can imagine how he looked like a redwood tree to an elementary school kid.  He would literally smother quarterbacks and it is worth looking at some old film of his sacks.  Thankfully Davidson didn't live in our neighborhood.  I probably wouldn't have every gone to collect from him.  lol

Re: Asking a customer for additional payment after the sale.

I do know of a place that you can still see the buyer's email. I don't want to post it out in the open for fear that eBay will close up that loophole, but I'm happy to share via DM for anyone who is interested.

When I grew up, which is debatable, we could dial "popcorn" to get the time of day.  If you hit *69 on a touch tone phone I think it dialed back the last number you quite could run fast enough to answer.  Most families didn't have answering machines with the cassette tape back then.  We would look up in the phone book which zone we were calling to find out how much it would cost per minute.
