I give 100% with every sell. My items are packed professionally, ship same day and write out hand written note to every buyer. Sometimes, include free treats or gifts. No one is leaving feedback anymore. I always leave feedback for every buyer. In my opinion, someone spends money with you, you thank them. Most of my purchases the seller will say, we give 5 star feedback when you leave us feedback. Extortion in my opinion. Feel so unappreciated. One's that ask the most out of me, never leave me feedback.

While I do mostly leave feedback, it is to be noted that the whole thing is voluntary and buyers can only receive positives, no matter how good or bad they are as buyers. So a lot of sellers will simply just not bother since the whole exercise of buyer feedback is moot and choose to spend their time on more productive pursuits. While it's nice to know that the item arrived and the buyer is happy, really the only thanks necessary is the prompt payment and honesty. No news is good news, most of the time in doing this.

Amazed Most Customers Never Leave Feedback Anymore
I'm not surprised at all. It's a slow and cumbersome interface, it's time consuming, and the buyer sees absolutely no benefit from doing it.

Feedback for buyers is pointless really - they can only get positive so it is just basically a count of what they buy.
For sellers, once established, so long as you don't get neg or neutral you should be happy with that.
I don't feel the need to be thanked by a buyer, I am grateful they purchased from me and I have just done the job expected.
As for you quote: "Most of my purchases the seller will say, we give 5 star feedback when you leave us feedback. Extortion in my opinion" those sellers are clueless, there are no stars or anything other than positive to be left for you as a buyer.

Seek other avenues for "Appreciation". Did you come to eBay to buy or sell something or to accumulate feedback. EBay needs to drop feedback for buyers, it causes "Issues" for some and a decline in their self worth because they failed to receive a meaningless "Thank You".

Question?
I don't sell on eBay. When I buy I leave feedback right away on receipt because I assume it will help the seller since eBay has so many rules that can hurt a seller.
Am I wasting my time?
Is leaving feedback useful for the seller?
thanks

Leaving feedback for a seller does 2 things:
It helps to wash away any negative (undeserved like myself)
Lets seller know you received it and are happy
So, leaving Positive Feedback for sellers is helpful. For buyers, it's now a joke.
But...people would rather look at Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and collect 'likes' rather than care about feedback by purchasing something.

Like was said by @stainlessenginecovers , feedback helps from the buyer to the seller for those reasons. It's good to know the item was received in good condition to general satisfaction, and I definitely appreciate seeing those feedbacks. But like was said, most don't give feedback (my overall rate as a seller is about 20%). So no, you're not wasting your time giving sellers feedback. The point I was trying to make is that it's moot from the seller to the buyer as positives are all the seller can give.

But it is still good for buyers who may turn into sellers one day. What do we always tell buyers who have a 0-5 FB rating? Buy a few things to build up your FB rating.
This feedback rating system is old school and needs to be abolished agree with the poster who said it. Especially with that horrendous 500 character based novel.
Incidentally OP I always leave a feedback for both, if something is wrong, I tried to work it out and I have never left a red donut to anyone.
Just my take on it, from a freezing "Silver "in Northern Michigan! " Help me"!!!

We used to leave FB at Payment. We leave auto FB when a Buyer does and a clump later usually after 30 days.
We receive very few FB in correlation to the number of sales. FB really means little - one-sided mechanism that may or may not reflect the true buying experience. Wish e-Bay would count the metrics/percentages shown against the number of overall Seller transactions (excluding a Seller's buying ones) vs FB.

Awe... Here's some sun to warm you..
I agree.. The advice for newbie sellers is often, buy a few things to learn the process and build a few FB.
I suppose if we know the buyer has 300 FB, it's less important but I leave it just the same.
I most often just thank them for their purchase.
In general:
FB or sellers hasn't been at a high percentage for a good many years- I think it's been less & less with the rise of Internet shopping and yes the river SIGH

I immediately give my buyers feedback right after I ship. I often note that they paid "immediately" and that the transaction was smooth. I want them to come back and I assume that many do appreciate the feedback, especially if they are new to eBay. I could care less if they reciprocate.

It is useful to the seller.

100% is what the expectation is. It seems that if it is less than that is when you hear from them.

Know what you mean! I can not go to sleep at night before leaving positive feedback for a pleasant buying experience.
