After 15 years we are leaving eBay

After 15 years being with eBay. They are asking for my husband’s drivers license can you believe that? He is not gonna put his drivers license online now with all the scammers going on nowadays and after 15 years we’re leaving we’re not buying or selling on eBay.

Thanks for announcing your reaction to a common practice of requiring verification (or regular re-verification) of identity.

I wish you success at whatever platform you move on to next.  (That will also require the same verification).

Don't forget to end your 110 active listings.   That would cause a lot of headaches if you walked away from your store with active listings.

If you want your money you will comply or ebay will send your payments to your state as unclaimed money where you will need to provide the same proof of identity to claim it.

Proof of identity is a requirement to sell on here or any other online platform that utilizes a payment processor.

Uploading the required information is very safe. But hey, do what you want..

How odd.  It is usually the scammers who refuse to verify their IDs.  Anyhow, happy trails wherever they lead you.

OMG  Really???? I can't believe they have waited so long to finally ask your husband.

4. Seller Onboarding

In order to use our services, you must register and accept these Payments Terms of Use. If you reside in the EEA, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland, your submission of your Managed Payments online registration application constitutes your offer to conclude this agreement. If your onboarding is not immediately confirmed, you will receive notification that you have been approved to receive services once we have reviewed your information.

To set up and use your eBay account for Managed Payments, you must:

  • Link a financial account, so you may receive settlements of proceeds from Managed Payments to this account (“Linked Financial Account”). If you reside in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom or Australia, your Linked Financial Account must be a bank account based in your country of residence. If you reside in a country within the EEA (except Iceland), you may provide a bank account located in any EEA member state (except Iceland), as your Linked Financial Account. If you reside in Switzerland or Liechtenstein, you must provide a bank account located in Switzerland or Liechtenstein as your Linked Financial Account. During registration, we may provide you with the option to use a bank account located in an Additional Country at our sole discretion. If you reside in New Zealand or any other Additional Country, we may require you to create and link an account with a specific bank or a non-bank third-party financial institution as we may direct. If we cannot make direct debits from your Linked Financial Account for Owed Amounts (as defined in Section 9), we require you to keep another payment method on file with us and we may withhold payouts to your Linked Financial Account until you have successfully provided us with such other payment method.
  • Regardless of any other terms about settlement methods on the eBay Services (including eBay’s payment policies and information available when you create listings, which may continue to display settlement methods that are not currently supported for payments that we manage), disbursements via other settlement methods, such as to PayPal, are not available at this time. You may change your Linked Financial Account at any time. Payouts will be made to your new Linked Financial Account subject to (i) your completion of the Linked Financial Account verification process, and (ii) the completion of our assessment for security and risk purposes and under our anti-money laundering and other legal obligations. Our assessment typically takes up to two (2) days after your completion of the verification process, or longer if any issues or irregularities arise in which case we will complete our assessment without undue delay. You represent and warrant that you are the lawful owner of, or have the lawful right to use, any Linked Financial Account you associate with your eBay account.
  • Provide us with all information which we may require for purposes that include: verifying your identity, complying with applicable anti-money laundering and sanctions screening obligations, allowing us to manage settlements of your transaction proceeds, and assessing fraud and risk. If you are an individual, this information may include, without limitation, your full name, address, phone number, date of birth, taxpayer identification number, bank account information, and a form of government-issued identification (e.g., a copy of your identity card or driver’s license). If you are a business, this information may include, without limitation, your full business name, address, phone number, entity type, bank account information, tax identification number, and business number, in addition to details regarding your beneficial owner(s), director(s), officer(s), authorized representative, and/or primary contact, such as name, contact information, nationality, title, and government-issued identification (such as a United States Social Security Number). You understand that we will be unable to settle your proceeds or issue you any tax documents (such as a United States Internal Revenue Service Form 1099-K) if you do not provide or appropriately update us with accurate contact information and other requested data.
Lift your left leg at midnight to start off on the right foot. Happy new Year!

Do you really think that your refusal to provide your identity is going to prevent scammers and identity theft? They're merely trying to verify that your husband is who he says he is.

And are you aware that your driver's license number is anonymous? No states are allowed to use SSN as the driver's license number so your fears are unwarranted:

"Section 7214 of the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 [42 USC 405(c)(2)(C)(vi)(II)] explicitly prohibits printing Social Security numbers on identification documents issued by motor vehicle agencies, including driver licenses and vehicle registrations."

Sorry to say, but chances are your husband's driver's license number (and his social security number, birthdate, mother's maiden name, address, phone number, email address/password, mortgage information, credit card numbers, etc) can be purchased on the dark web for a nominal fee.  Unfortunately, that's the scary reality of our personal information--it's not personal anymore. You might be better served providing the information to eBay and then using some of your seller earnings to purchase one of the numerous credit monitoring services.

I don't either.

Heck...U-Haul even wanted my driver's license to verify my identity when I rented a trailer from them last week (and all the times before) and to quick in-process, I could upload my drivers license into their system prior to getting to their location and picking up the trailer.

You can probably guess what I did.

And no...my driver's license does NOT have my social security number on it as my driver ID any more. I took that off years ago. South Dakota had that as an option to use at one time.

People are so paranoid. But I wear a tin foil hat to protect me from 5G signals so what do I know?

Yes, I can believe that. Furnished mine years ago when MP came in. I had no problem verifying my identity. Why would I?

It appears that you have 110 listings that you plan to abandon the proceeds from if you don't take them down now. Usually the next step they take, after asking for verification and not getting it, is to withhold all payments in case they are dealing with scammers. The hammer could come down at any time.

Speaking as a Boomer, I gotta say this younger generation sure is touchy about their drivers' licenses.

Back in the olden days when we paid for things by writing a check -- google it -- we had to show the random employee at Macy's or Sears or even the local grocery store -- we had to show our drivers' licenses to random people we'd never seen before.   And that check had our home addresses printed right on it !!!

Talk about Stranger Danger !!   And we weren't even aware of it !!
Can You Believe THAT ?!?
And then -- and Then !!! -- we had to tell that stranger our home telephone numbers !!!  (There were only HOME telephone numbers back then.)

Not to mention how we'd answer a ringing telephone at any hour of the day or night !!
Without knowing who was calling !!
It's a miracle I'm still alive . . . . . . . .
