I hope someone can help. I am selling a Wedgewood dish and checked others on Ebay before listing. Last night, I was sent an offer and was happy to send a counteroffer. I thought someone was trying to buy mine, however it was an offer from another seller of the same item. The counter offer was accepted and I was all ready to pack and get it ready to ship when I received a message that I need to pay for it. That's when I realized that I actually bid on someone else's. I immediately sent an email to the seller explaining the situation and asking them to cancel, but haven't heard back yet. I don't see any way to cancel on my end. Do I just wait it out or will I be dinged for non-payment? Frustrated.

I believe you can select the option to request to cancel the order due to "ordered by mistake" through eBay
Scroll down over your list of options/actions you can take on that "order"
Other more seasoned sellers can correct and/or elaborate as necessary
Best of luck with shop & sales

If the seller does not accept the cancellation, you have no choice but to wait it out and take the non-payment ding. One nonpayment ding will have absolutely no consequences for you.
Frustrated
Frustrated that buyers cannot cancel orders unilaterally with no consequences and without seller involvement? Or frustrated that the seller you bought from last night is not monitoring his cancellation notices 24/7?
Every message I get with an offer from a seller says "You have an offer from the seller" right in the title. And the listing it leads to does not have my title and does not have my pictures. I am honestly struggling to see how you got to "frustrated" without stopping at "embarrassed" first 🙂

If you file the official ebay cancellation request, the seller can either approve or deny it, but you won't get an unpaid strike regardless of their decision.

I did that a couple years ago, I messaged the seller explained the situation and he cancelled upon my request. Most sellers would cancel then risk getting a false return.

The counter offer was accepted ...
@myatticcorners1
Counter offers accepted by the seller will remain for sale now until someone pays for the item. Sellers cannot send a reminder, nor an invoice for accepted counter offers. As @fern*wood pointed out in message #4, if you requested a cancellation (or not) you will not get an Unpaid Item Strike if you don't pay even if the cancellation is denied.

Thanks, I missed they made a counter offer.

Yes, a buyer can request that a seller cancel for them; however, there is no requirement that a seller agree to the request. Plus the seller has 3 days to do this so you may have to wait a few days to find out whether it will be cancelled.
"I don't see any way to cancel on my end." Nope, because there isn't one.

I'm frustrated that I don't see anywhere to formally request a cancellation. I sent an email to the seller, but don't know if that is enough to require some action on their part. All I am left with is a request for payment invoice.

Would like to do this but don't see that option anywhere. Can you elaborate? Thanks for your help.

You should do the right thing and pay for the purchase. You know you have cost the seller time and money. Next time, log out of eBay when your just looking. That way not only won't you receive offers but you can't make purchases either.
Got to watch what your clicking when logged in. eBay is light on undo buttons.

I can definitely see how this could happen and i often times think someone is sending me an offer for an item. I rather dislike this whole new "send offers to potential buyers" theme that was added, because as a seller they all wind up in similar looking windows, both as sales and purchases.

Ittybitnot was correct in post #7. I missed that you had made a counter offer. Just don't pay and nothing will happen. I have one right now where I accepted a counter offer and they buyer hasn't paid. There is nothing for me to do. My item is still for sale, so you really shouldn't worry about it...plus you told the seller what happened.

Yup, @myatticcorners1
If you search ebay for the item, you'll see that it's still an active current listing.
