Re: About this product now showing in some listings

I added "Please note that the "About this product" section is for the item in general and NOT for the item listed. ebay puts this information there not the sellers." to the about section of my ebay store. I think I can do a bulk edit for all my items to add that text to each listing but am afraid to do it thinking something bad will happen and hose all my listings.

Re: About this product now showing in some listings

Had to revise listings, used this statement in the description box. Just another attack on small sellers.

Please note that ebay may be adding  "About this product" to the listing that may or may not be accurate!

I'm unclear about how the listing could get connected with the catalog information without some kind of identifier number, unless they are just using a title.......which as said....ignores various editions, et al.

Frankly, I thought those catalog pages were dead and gone........they were wrong to begin with and most of them were badly wrong.......  Harry Tempkin admitted it and that's the reason IS became the new "end all, be all" rather than the catalog after Winneg left.  Now Harry's gone, so don't know if someone is trying to resurrect the catalog or not. I guess the best thing is to wait and see what Tyler says......

I just checked a Scott Turow novel.......  Testimony

About 1/2 the books listed had the Ebay catalog information (if it has that, it shows a product rating....1-5 stars)..........  so somehow those are avoiding having the info added......I couldn't see any ISBN #'s in the listing on the few I checked.

Re: About this product now showing in some listings

Well, that doesn't make much sense.......my mind is too stuffed.

The listings WITHOUT the product ratings don't show  ISBN numbers........and do NOT have the ebay info in them....so there must be a way to keep it out.....

Re: About this product now showing in some listings

I'm having the same issue with action figures I'm selling. I've never gone through the catalog, but suddenly any figure I included the upc to has the "about this product" info added... and most of it is inaccurate. I contacted chat (actually got a real person) and they thought that only sellers using the catalog were suppose to be getting the product box added and said they would issue a report. She also had me go into my ebay Summery page and use the "tell us what you think" link at the top right of the page to send my concerns. Maybe if they get enough complaints they'll change things back??

Re: About this product now showing in some listings

"About This Product" recently appeared in the auto parts categories and it's a mess there as well. Many auto parts have a "casting number" or "ident" which is the actual number stamped on the part. Often this is NOT the manufacturer part number, and there can be many variations of a part that have the same ident, but different MPNs (which are often not printed on the part). It looks like eBay has just ingested all the stuff that sellers have typed into the part number fields over the years, and decided they are all MPNs.

I always do my research and add correct MPNs to my listings. I typically used the "Other part number" field for idents, but that field is no longer available for new listings as of a few weeks ago. So that gives me the choice of either leaving out the idents (which buyers often use as search keywords) or wrongly placing them in the MPN/OEM PN/Superseded PN fields, which now causes erroneous product catalog entries to become associated with my listings.

If eBay wants to do something with a part number catalog, they need to get the actual manufacturer part numbers into their database and not rely on numbers entered by sellers who don't know the difference between an ident and an MPN. Trying to take the easy way out just created a misleading mess for everyone.

@rimtrim

Your statement reminded me of another post in an alternate ecommerce discussion group that I read today.  In that instance,  the seller had used "sell similar", and left out the MPN or UPC number on purpose when creating a new listing.   Apparently, since the original had one at one time, the newly created version auto populated  the product id info anyway from the OLD original listing.  There was no way to get rid of it that could be found other than just deleting that listing and starting again from scratch and NOT using the sell similar.  I don't recall if the info was present BEFORE the listing went live or was added after, only that it didn't match the product being sold at all.

I did a cursory search to obtain more accurate information, but can't find it right now.  Will look some more in the a.m.

@mintoncard

Are you able to post a listing and leave out the UPC?  What happens to your listing if you can leave it out?  Is it by chance added afterwards anyway?

Re: About this product now showing in some listings

Since December 1st, I have the same issue about eBay arbitrarily adding the "About this product" section to my listings with incorrect/inaccurate information.  Since the top of the Description section states "Seller assumes all responsibility for this listing" I've added a DISCLAIMER to my listings that (as the Seller) I NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR WHAT IT REFLECTS!  (Just FYI eBay:  I do not have the option on my classic listing tool to have eBay prefill information so there's nothing for me to uncheck nor do I include a UPC since most of the items I sell are vintage and don't have a UPC or are pre-owned so I've no idea what it might be.)

Re: About this product now showing in some listings

I tried removing the upc from my most recent listing, and it did not remove the 'about this product' info. Unfortunately it only removed the upc from my list of specifics. I'm going to try to list a different figure later with no upc to start with and see what happens??

Re: About this product now showing in some listings

What happens when you Revise and remove the catalogue?

The problem I have with the Books catalogue is that it often brings up a different edition, and a few of my buyers are looking for specific editions.

Re: About this product now showing in some listings

I did go into one of my listings and did a "sell similar", used all the same info minus the upc, and it listed a whole new auction without the about this product info. Unfortunately I needed to delete the original listing which had some watchers, but at least it won't have the inaccurate info. Sadly, for people with hundreds of auctions, this probably will not be worth their time to relist everything. If everyone keeps complaining, maybe it will get fixed before the holidays end.

Re: About this product now showing in some listings

Appreciate the reply.  I don’t include a UPC since either my items are so old they don’t have one or are used and I’ve no idea what it might be.  When I initially submitted my items, they are okay; however, the “About this product” gets added within a day or two (so you might keep an eye on the item you revised).
