Managed Payments

For those of us that are small time EBay sellers, who use EBay as a “side hustle” and keeps things small, but have been somewhat successful selling and shipping consistently and earning some extra needed income DAILY, Managed Payments, although good for fee reductions, perhaps; Has destroyed what was a good thing. The Big time, full time sellers who have excellent sourcing protocols and the like won’t understand why some of us are upset. They’re still winning. It just depends on where you we’re and are at. Some of us keep our shipping payments solely under our purchased item funds. I just know what worked for me has changed and I need to decide if I want to keep up with my small store, for limited payouts, now for a longer period of time without said payouts.

I wish you luck with your decisions, and I'd offer advice but your post confuses me as to what your issues are.

Re: Managed Payments

Hasn't destroyed anything for me.

I opened a free checking account devoted to my eBay MP.

Shipping paid from my MP pending payments.

I source with cash.

Re: Managed Payments

Its all about ebay. They've made things more inconvenient while they reap all the benefits. Now I have to open and track another checking account, I have to wait to be paid while ebay takes their money immediately and 2% more than they used to.  This was not done for our benefit. It was done to squeeze just a little more profit with no regard to the problems it causes their customers.

Re: Managed Payments

This move was definitely done to maximize ebay profits, make no mistake.  We were primarily paypal, where I could transfer all my money for the day's sales in the evening, and have it in my bank account in the morning.  Now, with managed payments, they automatically transfer funds the day AFTER shipments have been scanned by the carrier, then it takes about another day and a half to hit the bank account.  As a seller with a decent volume, this means I need to keep about a $10000 balance in my checking account, just to cover the float for a busy weekend of sales, as we have to pay for products shipped that day, but we don't get the money for several days.  So you small sellers don't need to think how good you think the big guys apparently have it, this has created probems for us as well.   The actual fees charged dropped by a tiny amount as you have to take into account the new higher ebay fee also replaces the credit card or paypal fess that were charged separately.  We all had to adjust how to do business.

Re: Managed Payments

Honestly, Managed Payments hasn't done anything to me as a "side hustle".  I sell, I ship, I still get money, it's just delayed.

The problem I have is in mitigation: What happens when things go south?  I had plans and felt safe under the Paypal system, but MP changed all of that.  A lot of it is adjusting and analyzing all of the new risks MP presents.  The biggest one being everything going to a checking account, the next biggest one having to float all the shipping costs if I don't want to wait to be paid to ship (a lot of sellers have talked about this one on here, but get ridiculed by the ebay cheerleaders).  Ebay under MP is far riskier for the sellers than under the old PP system and you are right, the bigger ones will be able to mitigate that risk a lot better than the small ones.  Like for me, part of the mitigation of that risk is that I have ceased being a buyer on Ebay.

I may get comfortable if the MP system doesn't go pear shaped on me again (it already has once).  But it is what it is.  As long as ebay moves most all of my product in a timely fashion in a way that ends up with items gone and money in my pocket we're gonna have a happy relationship.  When that stops, ebay's gonna stop.  Just what it is.

Re: Managed Payments

I like your "side hustle". I call it a side gig. Anyway, we all loved the paypal instant payment. That is gone, never to return. However, even though it takes longer to get the $$ it's easy to manage and keeps coming in steady if you have steady sales. I have monthly goals so the money just sits in my bank account until I need it. It takes some getting used to but still for me the best place for what I sell.

When they send the funds to your checking account has nothing to do with when the item is shipped and scanned.

The funds are sent to your checking account once the payment has been processed.

Have a great day.

Why do you have to float all the shipping cost?

Use the pending funds to cover the shipping.

Re: Managed Payments

I don't really get all the fuss from some people, aside for the fact this is a change. It seems that is the main reason for people to complain. I also sell on Etsy and they use the same company Adyen for payments, so I was used to this before eBay started using it. However I never had an issue when Etsy decided to convert over either, so there's that. I guess I can take change and adapt rather quickly, rather then fussing and fighting my way. Best of luck to you....
