All returns and refunds need to be processed through eBay. Since it appears you did not do this, eBay considers the return still “open” and ultimately forced a refund by withdrawing from your funds.

If you’re going to sell on eBay, you should familiarize yourself with the protocols and policies. Otherwise it will cost you.

You made a mistake which is a lesson learned. When you receive a return case and get the item back you are required to click refund in the case so the case can close. Never send a money order through the mail. That kind of payment and source has died out years ago. Ebay and other sites now process payments & refunds electronically. When you say "so someone owes me 19.00 dollars" unfortunately you will not be getting your $19 back unless the customer sends you back the money order.

Hi @lindaj4820 . Why did you go outside of the system and use a money order? That's highly irregular.

Please review eBay's help page about managing return requests. This link goes directly to the section about how to issue a refund:

https://www.ebay.com/help/selling/managing-returns-refunds/handle-return-request-seller?id=4115#sect...

Because you went outside of eBay's system, eBay has no way to confirm the buyer was refunded. Payments and refunds all need to be managed through eBay's system.

Because you chose to go outside of the system, you essentially gave the buyer a free $19. Unless the buyer feels like doing the "right thing" and sending the money order back to you, there's nothing you can do here. The money is gone.

You needed to refund her through eBay. Since you  refunded outside of eBay you are out the $19.00 money order and they will also take the $19.00 form your payment source.

Next time you need to refund through the eBay case.

Sorry, but you should have refunded through the return case.

You have no proof the buyer was refunded, so yes, Ebay will pull the funds from your checking account and refund the buyer.

Have a great day.

You've been on ebay a long time, I'm surprised you refunded through a money order in the mail.  As others have noted, ebay doesn't recognize that.

Why did you send a money order?

Were you afraid that Ebay would punish you for having a return?

Your money order was outside the Ebay ecosystem and effectively never existed.

Your buyer received a gift which they have no reason to return unless they choose to.

Most sellers would not send anyone a money order, and probably a majority of sellers would not accept payment by money order. I would not accept a money order, I'd rather not make the sale.
