Hello,
I recently sold an item on eBay for $41.73 with $5.00 shipping. After buyer received it decided they didn’t like it. Mind you, I take a lot of photos of my items and give detailed descriptions and full disclosure. This item was in very good condition…….no issues.
I agreed to the return. On my listing it states that buyer pays return shipping. Well, this buyer sent a $41.73 item back thru fedex home delivery and the shipping fee was $33.83. Then, eBay deducts the FedEx shipping fee from my account.
Why would the buyer return a $41.73 item and send it back thru FedEx at $33.83 shipping fee? AND, why is EBay deducting the ridiculous fee from my account? Something is very wrong here.

What kind of case did the buyer open? If INAD (item not as described), then right, wrong, or indifferent, the return shipping falls on you. I'm not saying that's right - but that's ebay. It sounds like they filed INAD, and you didn't send a return label, then ebay dinged you for the shipping cost.

Have you checked your return settings? Perhaps you have relinquished control over returns to eBay. (Just a guess.)
I recall seeing another post here a few weeks back where a buyer was presented with two return shipping options -- USPS and FedEx. The latter was significantly more expensive. (Perhaps because it offers home pickup?)
(PS: This scenario is one reason I pay for AND approve all returns: I have complete control over the return shipping costs and keep eBay far away.)

I would contact Ebay and appeal that charge. That is something Ebay will have to make a decision on. For the future you may want to consider 30 day returns and seller pays for shipping back. That way you have leverage with the label being sent to the buyer. Right now you have buyer pays shipping and you brought up a prime example of what buyers will do to get out of pay shipping cost back. It's better off just paying the cost up front with the label.

We have to understand buyers are not shippers like us sellers.
I would have worked with the buyer for a partial refund or something else in return.
Returns from a buyer can be scary.
I live within walking distance from FedEx, UPS and the USPS.
I can use any of them for my 'convenance' for returning something.
Sounds like what the buyer did in this case.
And sounds like buyer did an item not as described.
