Buyer returned a different item than what I sent - how do I handle?

I sold a 1st edition # 0859 Trail of the Painted Pony to a customer and she claimed that it had a horrible stench and couldn't bring it into her house it was so bad.   I knew I should have trusted my gut and not accepted the return...but I was trying to be fair.  (lesson #1 - always listen to your gut).  She sent back a 3rd Edition # 3027.  I guess she thought I wouldn't look and would just refund the money.  At this point I have reported to her to ebay (via report buyer).  I also replied and let her know that I was not going to refund her money because she sent back a different item.  I said if she sent back the horse I sent her I'd be happy to refund her.  I figure she will dispute the charges next.   I see there is an option to ask ebay to step in...should I do this?

If the buyer opened the return request for NAD (not as described), you didn't really have an option of denying the return unless you wanted ebay to let her keep the item free PLUS get a refund. 

 

You have to issue the refund but you can report the buyer by going to the "leave feedback" dropdown on the orders page. One of the options in the dropdown is to report the buyer for returning a different item than what you sent.

If you are a Top Rated Seller who offers 30-day or longer returns and the buyer returns something different, opened, used, etc. the seller can deduct up to 50% of the refund to recover the decreased value of the item.
