Revising A Listing

Are there fees associated with revising a listing?

There are only fees when the price of the item is raised, or when special features are added.

Is there a policy against making revisions so that the listing becomes a completely different item?

While there is no policy against making revisions to this degree, keep in mind that any listing revisions will appear in the buyer’s purchase history and may lead to confusion. Though they can select the item from their purchase history to view the original listing they purchased, sometimes buyers or sellers will report concerns because a listing is in their purchases/sales that they don’t remember because it has been revised since the transaction occurred. For this reason, we recommend creating a new listing for a different item.

Sales Tax

Is it possible for eBay to more clearly indicate to buyers that the separate transaction for sales tax in PayPal is coming from eBay?

While the PayPal transaction does state that it's for tax, we’re happy to pass along the feedback!

Combined Shipping

Are there any updates to the combined shipping issues where different options and prices are displayed to the buyer across different devices (mobile vs. desktop)?

So far we've confirmed that the desktop experience is working as it should; displaying the cheapest option available, based on the quantity, weight, and dimensions provided, as well as calculating the appropriate discount based on the rules you have set up in the listing. What we are currently digging into is some inconsistencies within the mobile app at different points of the purchase experience; the listing view, the add to cart confirmation, the cart view, and the view when proceeding to checkout, specifically. No update to share at this moment on what exactly is going on or why, but we are actively working on this!

I have been seeing an increase in concerning listings in the Coins and Paper Money Category recently, does anybody from eBay monitor categories?

Anytime you see concerning listing on eBay you are welcome to report these for review. We have teams looking into these reports for appropriate action around the clock, everyday of the year. In addition to these reports, we also proactively review the site for potential violations and identify issues through automatic scans. Those who seek to commit fraud or take advantage of our site will continue to create new methods of circumvention, and as we discover these methods, we will improve our filters to better capture these kinds of issues. Check out our Help Page on reporting an item for more info on what steps you can take to help protect the site.

Notes Feature

I was wondering if there is a way to Bulk Edit "Notes" on Active listings or Drafts?

It is possible to add and/or edit notes in bulk in the Seller Hub Listings section for active items. Once you've selected the listings you'd like to edit, click the Action button and select Add/edit note. This will allow you to add or edit notes in bulk slight_smile

Thanks so much! Also, when creating a listing from scratch can a Note be added?

I'm not seeing an option to add a note during the listing flow, but one can be added to the listing within the Listings section of Seller Hub after it's been listed by using the arrow drop-down menu to the left of the item.

Item Specifics

I’ve heard there will be changes to Item Specifics that will be effective October 1. I never received this email, however, I will be impacted as the changes are for a category I sell in. Is there anywhere here in the Community this notice was posted?

Sometimes we send out notices to sellers in batches, so an update may be coming your way soon. In other instances, those sellers who face a large investment of time to make necessary changes will receive advance notice, while other sellers may see an update directly in the listing form itself when changes are needed.

Shipping Fees

Every year, postage rates go up... that equals bigger profit for eBay on a sale. It may also equal a lower profit for the Seller. If we buy postage on eBay, why can't eBay credit the Final Value Fee on that label?

We work to negotiate carrier specific discounts for our sellers. While you can pass along these savings to your buyers if you would like, these discounts could also be retained to help you offset the increases shipping costs that are introduced over time. We have no plans to eliminate or credit the Final Value Fee related to shipping costs, as these fees discourage moving the price of the item to the shipping cost in an effort to avoid fees, as well as serve as an incentive for those sellers who offer free shipping. We encourage you to review the shipping discount Help Page for more info on the carrier specific discounts that are available.

Unsold Section

Recently I noticed that my Unsold section contains listings that have already been relisted in bulk. Did something change?

It sounds like you are describing the normal experience for this page that we have had for quite some time. The Unsold section by default contains all of your items that ended without a successful sale, which includes items that have already been relisted. You can use the Not yet relisted filter to view only those listings that have not yet been relisted.

Is it possible for ebay to do a better job of indicating to buyers that the mystery paypal charges to their accounts are really sales tax?

We see innumerable posts here from buyers wondering what the small paypal charges are on their account.

There is a good thread going regarding revising a GTC listing.

Some sellers are still struggling to learn how to survive with the new GTC mandate.  As we know many sellers like to rotate their stock and therefore find the need to end a listing before it renews so they can run a different listings.

Some posters on that thread will revise a listing that hasn’t sold yet to be a completely different item in an effort to avoid having to end the listing and then create a new listing [for the new item] and post that.

Some will have the inventory setting for OOS set and when a listing sells out, they may revise it to be a completely different item and add quantity so it is a listing back in the flow for buyers to consider purchasing.  However it retains the selling history of the item the listing was originally created for.

Brian did come and give a very good response on the thread, however I’d like to look at this just a little more as I remember this coming up before and I believe it was Trinton that posted something on this subject, but my memory may be incorrect as I couldn’t find the thread or maybe the Chat that it appeared on.

But I remember talking about Ebay not wanting us to do this for good reason.  Both types could be seen as fee avoidance and the latter example as both fee avoidance and search manipulation.

What are your thoughts??

Hi @alcoforever, while the PayPal transaction does state that it's for tax, I understand why this may be confusing for some buyers. I'm happy to pass along the feedback!

Hi @mam98031, the only post I recall that may be sparking your memory is a conversation about when a fee may be charged when revising a listing. Fees may occur when the price of the item is raised, or when special features are added. I do remember having a discussion where I shared some major changes to a listing that could result in fees, but I think this was specifically for auction style listings.

Looking at Brian's post, it looks like the correct info was shared and I wouldn't have any more to add. I can see why some concerns may come up for sellers who may be attempting to use this as a way of avoiding fees, but this leading to confusion for buyers or sellers later. Either way, I can confirm we do not currently have a policy against this.

Good afternoon eBay Support Team:

Subject: Ability to Edit "Notes" in the Bulk Editor

I was wondering if there is a way to Bulk Edit "Notes" on Active listings or Drafts?  Right now the only way I can find to add or change a Note is on the individual listing once it is live.  It is helpful to see notes in the Sold file (pic below).  For our purpose, what this does is helps to indicate what inventory lot an item was sold from for accounting purposes.  If "Notes" could be added or changed in the Bulk Edit it would be a good feature.  If its already possible, yours truly has not figured out how to do it ...

Notes on items in the Sold file

Thank you for keeping me straight.

But just for the record.  I didn't think there was an actual policy.  But I did think Ebay was taking a stronger stand on this subject.

Hi @mendelsons, I just touched base with the team that has been investigating this and the topic is getting a bit more complex as we have found there is a different experience depending on the device that is being used, and whether a buyer is logged in or not. So far we've confirmed that the desktop experience is working as it should; displaying the cheapest option available, based on the quantity, weight, and dimensions provided, as well as calculating the appropriate discount based on the rules you have set up in the listing.
