Your Connection Is Not Private - message when updating listings

Oh boy, this is a tad concerning.

While updating listings individually I received the message "your connection is not private" as I was adding item specifics.

Did not see that message on any other site except for eBay today.

Glitch? Another eBay Hack?

It might be your browser warning you the connection is not secure.

Look in the browser window when connecting.  It will show a lock with https:// if it is a secure connection.

Actually it sounds more like a warning from your phone about your WiFi connection. If eBay wants to do a secure upload of data but you're connected via unsecured WiFi, your phone will give you a warning about the conflict. I get that a lot if I'm sitting in McDonald's and browsing on the phone.

The next time you see that warning, turn off WiFi on your phone, refresh the page (which will re-establish your connection over a secure cell path) and see if the warning goes away.

That is what is so concerning.  I always check to make sure I am logged on securely.

I had been working on eBay for about 2 hours when that message appeared.

My connection showed as secure with https:// and the lock icon closed.

Hi a_c,

I'm on a desk top computer hard wired into a modem.  Chrome browser.

Thanks for the info about phones and WiFi connections.  I do have an new Android but have not yet downloaded the eBay app but will keep that in mind when / if I use it for eBay work.

Desk top computer connection shows and still shows as secure (https:// with lock closed).

No blip in my electrical to disrupt my connection.  eBay page never changed just that message in eBay blue appeared at the top of the listing I was updating.

Chrome did two security sweeps of my computer this morning and found nothing.

Oh! Okay...

In that case, what might be going on is that the current session is trying to spawn a secondary connection for uploading, and it's that secondary (behind the scenes) connection that's insecure. If you're looking at the address of your existing window, that probably does show as secure, but it's the secondary one that's (apparently) not.

I would not be too terribly concerned, really. I don't think a secondary task such as uploading item specifics is going to open up a hole in the space-time continuum or anything like that, but it is the kind of detail that could provoke a hair-trigger security warning such as what you're seeing.

I mean, if you saw something like that while trying to conduct on-line banking, that would be different, and I'm not suggesting that this is a false alarm, but beyond showing eBay's code to be a little... shaky, I would not say that there is any imminent danger here.
