Hi Team, just wanted to give some feedback on how, as a Buyer, I interpreted a payment error as a technical issue when it turned out that it was actually an account-related issue on eBay's backend preventing me from making purchases in general.
That said, I would also like to respectfully request that buyers are given more transparency when "errors" like this happen so we know what's going on and how to rectify the situation.
For reference, the message I'm referring to is this:
"Please check your payment details or use a different payment option."
As to why I thought that this was a technical error:
I had previously made a successful BIN purchase using the same payment method as the one that got denied. The associated card has a high credit limit and my card company well knows that I'm shopping on eBay.
For these reasons, there was no reason, in my opinion, to get that message and without any other explanation, I thought it was some kind of technical app (or otherwise) error.
Turns out, it wasn't, and I had to call 3 different times to get the right answer as to what was going on and this was after three more back-and-forth chats with my card companies and doing some online research on the error.
Please consider sending buyers a message explaining what happened along with instructions on how to address these sorts of things.
As such, it wasn't until my card company told me that eBay had immediately reversed my purchase after approval that I realized it wasn't a tech error and that it was likely a payment processing issue of some kind.
I was told that my card company had denied (no, that wasn't it, but I understand that that's the first place to look) and when I finally told support on my final call that my card company confirmed approval but eBay reversed it and could I please be transferred to Managed Payments, I finally got the answer right away.
This was a very frustrating and worrying experience and it honestly could have been mitigated if only the error message had been explained.
Thanks for reading!
