EBAY ANNOUNCES THEY NO LONGER SUPPORT INTERNET EXPLORER, PLEASE USE CHROME OR FIREFOX

Well, I'm making the announcement for them. Why? Because it's ridiculous to have this go on for a month now with absolutely nothing from Ebay.    It's pretty obvious that Ebay decided it's not worth the trouble and expense to fix the IE issue with Ebays homepage or they would have fixed it by now - or at least made some sort of announcement.

But here's what is happening with the IE users. According to stats I found on the web, under 10 percent of users use IE11.  And most likely they're older users using older computers running Windows 8 or 7.  My guess is most of these users have no technical knowledge or even know what a "Browser" is.    First they think it's their computer - so they'll spend hours and hours trying to "fix" it basically trying over and over.   After so much frustration, they'll give up and never try again - "it doesn't work anymore".  Good luck getting these users to come back again.

Also, Ebay is trying so hard to compete with Amazon and retain customer sales.  But with this IE browser issue, they are effectually losing potentially up to 10 percent of their buying customers, our buying customers?  **bleep**?

Here's a very simple solution for Ebay.  Just add a simple page to come up when a user is detected using IE11, displaying :

"We're sorry, but Internet Explorer is no longer supported.  Please use a more current browser such as Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox" to access Ebay"

Problem solved, no more frustration for for approx 10 percent of the ebay users, they'll be able to access Ebay again - and Ebay won't lose sales from some good 'ol customers!

Ebay, what are you waiting for????

Re: EBAY ANNOUNCES THEY NO LONGER SUPPORT INTERNET EXPLORER, PLEASE USE CHROME OR FIREFOX

Its funny how all these big websites sound like websites in the early days of the internet... this page looks best in IE at 800 px ... and thanks to mobile-first design they look worse.

Seriously though this website has been broken for years.   You don't  get SSL on some private pages, my lists are sometimes there and then only the watch list,  a lot of the design ignores that users are not on a phone, the text sometimes just changes language, and I am sure there must be a lot of things like this that effect sales too.

Thank you. Wondered why every time I open eBay it says it's stopped working and my computer has to reopen it. I didn't see any announcement of this. I'm still using Win 7 Pro with IE, I keep my virus protection updated, and I'll be darned if I use Chrome. Google already keeps too much data on it's users. Firefox may be an option. You would think eBay would do everything it can to keep buyers and sellers.

That being said yes, plenty of websites are either refusing to operate with "outdated browsers" which they consider Windows 11 to be; others just give an annoying message saying "you are using an outdated browser/one we longer support; please consider upgrading to Chrome, Edge, etc...."

Just so we're all on the same page, I think you mean IE11, since there is no Windows 11. IE is a browser, and Windows is an operating system.

Re: EBAY ANNOUNCES THEY NO LONGER SUPPORT INTERNET EXPLORER, PLEASE USE CHROME OR FIREFOX

@pburn  @accessorymn

Edge is replacing IE as the Browser for Microsoft Windows operating system.

"Internet Explorer 11 (IE11) is the eleventh and final version of the Internet Explorer web browser by Microsoft. ... On Windows 7, 8.1, and 10, only Internet Explorer 11 will receive security updates for the remainder of those Windows versions' support life-cycles."

"Microsoft is phasing out Internet Explorer. Microsoft has a great new web browser for Windows 10 called "Edge," which means its legacy web browser is slowly being phased out. ... That means older versions of Internet Explorer, including versions 8, 9 and 10, will no longer get any updates or support after that date."

This is why eBay is no longer going to be compatible with IE.

BTW @accessorymn Per your quote,

"But here's what is happening with the IE users. According to stats I found on the web, under 10 percent of users use IE11.  And most likely they're older users using older computers running Windows 8 or 7.  My guess is most of these users have no technical knowledge or even know what a "Browser" is."

-Well, I'm one of those older users, but I do try to keep myself informed so as to make any necessary changes. Tech is constantly changing. I learned from eBay long ago when Edge first came out that they were going to eventually phase out updates for IE users.

Re: EBAY ANNOUNCES THEY NO LONGER SUPPORT INTERNET EXPLORER, PLEASE USE CHROME OR FIREFOX

1SisterWoman, If you're able to use Internet Explorer 11  (not windows 11?) running Windows 7, then you are one of the rare cases it works.  I work in the computer industry and have several computers running Win7, Win8 and Win10.  I have IE, Edge, Chrome, Firefox and Opera.  None of my computers running Internet Explorer 11 (on Win7) will access Ebays homepage.  And if you read the forums, you will notice this is widespread.

Internet Explorer 11 is being phased out and retired.  There are several websites (especially secure sites) that will no longer allow access with Internet Explorer.  And again, Microsoft has stated they don't feel Internet Explorer is safe any longer and recommend using another browser (if you google search, you'll find this info all over - was reported over the last few months)

Based on a few comments,  my experience with older people using Internet Explorer vs younger people are typically using Chrome or Firefox is distracting the issue.  It's not important at this point.  Again, didn't mean to offend.  BTW: I'm almost 60 myself 🙂

Re: EBAY ANNOUNCES THEY NO LONGER SUPPORT INTERNET EXPLORER, PLEASE USE CHROME OR FIREFOX

I want to be clear on why I posted this.  Most people will think there is something wrong with their computer when accessing www.ebay.com homepage and greeted with this error.  They'll try all sorts of things including clearing browser cookies, cache, changing advanced settings in active X or admin privileges -  and all sorts of other things found from endless google searches to fix the problem.

IT'S NOT YOUR COMPUTER - it's Ebay.  And Ebay should just announce it so people know what is happening! Ebay's site is no longer compatible with Internet Explorer 11  (on most computer set ups).  So don't waste time trying to fix it - just use another browser like Chrome, Firefox or Opera.

BTW: As mentioned, Microsoft Edge replaced Internet Explorer11 in Windows 10 computers.  Edge is not available to Windows 7 or Windows 8 users though- at least right now.  Microsoft knows there are a lot of customers still using Win7 and Win8 (especially corporate customers), and Edge has some quirks and not well received by users.   So Microsoft announced that they're releasing a new version of Microsoft Edge over the next several months (beta is already released for testing).  It'll be based on Chromium browsers like Google Chrome.  The new MS Edge (based on Chromium) will be available to Win7 and Win8 users later in the year.

Re: EBAY ANNOUNCES THEY NO LONGER SUPPORT INTERNET EXPLORER, PLEASE USE CHROME OR FIREFOX

I think your post was well intentioned, and I do think people reading your thread who didn't understand the problems they're having have learned something.

I've, unfortunately, read a pretty good number of posts by members who absolutely refuse to use another browser. They want to use IE11 by golly and nothing else and eBay had better get this issue fixed and I mean RIGHT NOW because they're losing customers in droves because of it and I'm going to tag a blue and eBay can't afford to lose members because they're teetering on the brink of disaster anyway and why don't they listen to their own customers and I'm going to tag a blue again and I know there's a work-around but I shouldn't have to use a work-around and it should work with Windows whatever number I have--even though it was released ten years ago--and I'm not going to install another browser just because that would solve the problem (tagging another blue) and on and on ad nauseam. You get the point.

So, in conjunction with your thread/posts, I'd add the following friendly reminders to those folks:

**Don't cut off your nose to spite your face.
**Don't shoot yourself in the foot.
**Don't be your own worst enemy.

Well today I was able to help some people that have been trying to get on eBay for weeks and could not figure out what was going on !!!

The question was posted in a garage related forum !

Just wonder how many sales have been lost from people having no clue what is going on and can not figure out how to get on eBay ?

Re: EBAY ANNOUNCES THEY NO LONGER SUPPORT INTERNET EXPLORER, PLEASE USE CHROME OR FIREFOX

Well I switched to Chrome two weeks ago, and today when I went to login I got this message:

Something went wrong on our end. We’ll get things up and running again shortly.

Five minutes later I was able to login,  but then I'm just a seller - not a buyer likely to go elsewhere when encountering these little glitches which have been steadily increasing lately.

Hi @accessorymn, happy to clarify that we still support internet explorer, and the few reports we've seen on the Community of issues with the home page for IE users are not something we've been able to replicate on our end. It is likely that these problems are unrelated to eBay, and instead are due to a plugin/add on that may be involved. We recommend that anyone running into issues ensure they are using the most up to date version of their browser, or try a different browser.

To reiterate, we won't make an announcement like the one you have requested because it is not true. IE is still supported. I know that some users have reported issues here on the boards, but we are not receiving widespread reports and cannot recreate the issue you describe on our end.

Re: EBAY ANNOUNCES THEY NO LONGER SUPPORT INTERNET EXPLORER, PLEASE USE CHROME OR FIREFOX

Trinton, glad we have your attention on this ongoing widespread issue.

I have some info that might help.  I own several computers and noticed it's happening on Windows 7 computers when accessing www.ebay.com  homepage using Internet Explorer 11.  But here is some important info when trying to reproduce the error:  when not logged in to ebay, the homepage appears normal - but when you are logged in (or if you stay logged in like most people) it produces this error. So you'll have to log in to your account to see the error if you want to reproduce it - and make sure it's Windows 7 Internet Explorer 11.

BTW: I tried clearing the cache, cookies, etc - also reset IE to all default settings when this first happened about a month ago.

Here are 2 of my Windows 7 computers I have quickly avail -  One is a Dell laptop and the  other is a custom Tower.

I encourage everyone who is having this issue to post a picture so Trinton can see it's not just a few people from an issue outside of ebay that's causing this frustrating problem.  Since Ebay said they'll still support IE11, maybe now they'll fix it?

Re: EBAY ANNOUNCES THEY NO LONGER SUPPORT INTERNET EXPLORER, PLEASE USE CHROME OR FIREFOX

Has anyone with this IE11 issue looked at aggressively blocking ads?

Sounds suspiciously like a scripting error and may be due to third party ad related scripts (which I've been led to believe the eBay homepage is full of)
